But, where mood swings, tantrums, and dramatic phases do constitute what have always been accepted as a normal part of growing up, there are notable instances when shifts in mood and behaviour may be indicators of a larger, more daunting issue: mental illness. Of Logos, Owners, and Cultural Intermediaries: Defining an Elite Discourse in Re-branding Practices at Three Private Canadian Television Stations Christopher Ali University of Pennsylvania ABSTRACT This article explores the relationship between local television stations and na - tional networks through a careful study of station re-branding. The relationship is explored through case studies of the three privately owned English-speaking television stations in Win - nipeg, Canada. Through in-depth interviews with station and network executives, the author investigates the critical factors that facilitated the re-branding of Canada’s private television networks between 1997 and 2005. This period saw many English-speaking television networks unite their respective affiliate stations under a single logo and brand. Influenced by branding theory and scholarship on Canadian broadcasting, this article examines the shift away from local identification in Canadian broadcasting and the benefits, challenges, and resistances therein. Corus Entertainment Inc. acquires Shaw Media Inc. in transformational acquisition Date closed: 4/1/2016 Value: C$2.65 billion On April 1, 2016, Corus Entertainment Inc. acquired Shaw Media Inc. from Shaw Communications Inc. (SCI) for C$2.65 billion through a combination of cash and Corus Class B shares. The transaction gives Corus ownership of all of Shaw Media's leading brands, resulting in a combined portfolio with significant scale, including 45 specialty television channels, 39 radio stations, digital assets, the content studio, Nelvana and 15 conventional television stations. On a fiscal 2015 basis, Corus and Shaw Media combined generated about C$1.9-billion in revenue, about C$619-million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, and about C$430-million of free cash flow. The transaction is expected to generate C$40-million to C$50-million of annual cost synergies to be realized within 24 months, in addition to significant revenue synergies. Under the terms of the transaction, Corus agreed to acquire 100 per cent of Shaw Media for a total purchase price of C$2.65 billion. Upon closing of the transaction, SCI will receive about C$1.85-billion in cash and about 71 million Corus Class B shares at C$11.21 per share, which is based on current volume-weighted average trading prices on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2014-190: Let’s Talk TV CMPA’s Answers to the Commission’s Questions I. A Canadian television system that fosters choice and flexibility in selecting programming services 1. The CMPA acknowledges that it is the Government of Canada’s policy, as expressed in its October 2013 Throne Speech1 and in the Governor in Council’s s. 15 request to the Commission dated 7 November 20132, that the Canadian broadcasting system should provide Canadians with more control over what broadcasting services they can choose and pay for in a manner that that will minimize any negative impact on jobs within the industry. In her recent speech at the Banff World Media Festival, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Shelly Glover, reiterated the Government’s goal to provide more television channel choice while protecting the jobs that rely on a stable and healthy broadcasting system.3 2. We also acknowledge that, in its s. 15 Report to the Governor in Council dated 24 April 20144, the Commission has proposed, on a preliminary basis, that BDU subscribers should be able to buy channels on an a la carte basis or build their own service packages, and have the option to enter the system through the purchase of a “skinny” basic service. 3. While we share the concerns of many regarding the potential impact of the Commission’s proposed new Pick and Pay (“PnP”) regime, we submit that if it were to provide the “right” mix of choice, affordability and flexibility in packaging options, it could be important for promoting consumer satisfaction with the Canadian broadcasting system and reducing churn (cord cutting).
