The Los Angeles Valley College FOUNDATION 2010 ANNUAL REPORT Van Nuys Women’s Club to Donate $185K Note Revenue to be used to establish Nursing Endowment and Scholarships The Van Nuys Women’s Club informed the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation that it intends to donate a property note with a value of $185,000 in July or August. The Van Nuys Women’s Club was established in 1912 and has been a charitable organization donating to various community programs. In fact, it has awarded many scholarships to Los Angeles Valley College Nursing students. Due to an aging and declining club membership, the Club officers elected to dissolve the organization and donate its remaining assets to a non-profit organization. One of its assets is a note on a property which was sold to a church. Many may remember the property as the former club house of the Van Nuys Women’s Club and it was formerly designated as a historic landmark. After some discussion amongst the officers, the Club selected the Los Angeles Valley College Founda- tion. “We have enjoyed our relationship with LAVC’s Nursing Department. The Foundation is a stable organization and we liked their proposal to take mortgage revenue and establish the Van Nuys VNWC President Ann Kruse with Women’s Club Endowment to award Nursing Scholarships,” said Club President Ann Kruse. Susan Carleo, President of LAVC 3 Hardship builds character, or so they say. Valley College has endured another tough budget year but two bright lights shined through—our continuing bond-funded building program and our LAVC Founda- tion. As we revitalize the campus with new teaching and learning spaces, we are also creating oppor- tunities for naming facilities and outdoor spaces in honor of our donors. Our college Public Art Com- mittee is also in search of opportunities to combine bond funds with donations to enhance the garden- like environment that we are committed to maintaining as the signature look of Valley College. With our 60 th academic year behind us and with another year on a strict low-budget diet, we continue the struggle to serve more students with less. Now more than ever the LAVC Foundation makes a differ- ence to our students, our college, and our community. The 2010-11 year promises to be rewarding and productive thanks to our ongoing building projects and our renewed spirit of excellence, despite our lack of funds. Valley College, with the help and support of our Foundation, is here to make a lasting difference in our community. A. Susan Carleo, Ph.D. President Dr. Daniel LaVista Named Chancellor of LACCD Dr. Daniel LaVista, the Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, has been selected to be the next Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District. The decision was made by the LACCD Board of Trustees after a nationwide search for a new leader for the nation’s largest community college district. He will assume his duties on August 1. “We are thrilled to have Dr. LaVista join us,” said Mona Field, President of the LACCD Board of Trus- tees. “He has superb qualifications, and will bring new energy and ideas to help us move forward in our goals for student success.” Dr. LaVista said he is “honored and privileged to have been selected.” Though the District faces sig- nificant challenges, he said he was drawn to the job by “the enthusiasm and interest in student suc- cess” that he witnessed among District officials during the rounds of interviews that led to his selec- tion. Dr. LaVista, 66, has served in his current role with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia since August, 2004. In that position, he has provided day-to-day management of an agency that coor- dinates efforts among the 23 community colleges of the Virginia Community College System, along with the state’s 16 public and two-and four-year colleges and universities, as well as private and out- of-state institutions.
