This dissertation is the product of many conversations with museum professionals and volunteers throughout the state of California. While the overwhelming majority of participants in my research are kept confidential for reasons outlined within my dissertation, I am extremely grateful to the many opinions, ideas, thoughts, and suggestions provided by these individuals and acknowledge their influence upon my research, findings, and recommendations. I would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Pasadena Museum of History (PMH). During my three-and-a-half years of participant observation at the PMH, I was warmly received at every visit and truly looked forward to participating in the junior docent program two days per week during the school year. I could not have asked for a better contact than Brad Macneil who eagerly included me in the junior docent program, always asked after my progress, and worked to make sure I had everything I needed while at the site. I am very grateful to the many junior docents who allowed me to observe their participation and interview them as they exited the program. I am blessed to have met Jackie Dumin, Site Director of the Tallac Historic Site. During the course of my study, I could not have asked for a better contact, colleague, or friend. Jackie always made time for me during my multiple visits to Tallac Historic Site over the course of three summers, and she always made sure that I had what I needed while at her site. Jackie not only provided wonderful insight regarding her own site, but she became a wonderful resource to brainstorm with and became a true friend. I am especially indebted to Alice Stevenson, Director of the DiMenna Children’s History Museum, and Alisa Lynch, Chief of Interpretation at vi Manzanar National Historic Site, who reviewed multiple drafts of pages related to their respective sites to ensure quality and accuracy. Alice and Alisa went above and beyond and I am forever grateful to them for being so supportive of my research. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to talk with many museum professionals who gladly gave of their time (which is a rare commodity in the museum world) to assist me at various stages in my research: Erik Greenberg, Maria Kwong, Louise Pubols, Janessa West, Louise Mirrer, Heidi Doyle, and Patricia Johnson. I am also grateful to Ellen Calomiris and all of my colleagues at Rancho Los Cerritos for the wonderful support and understanding they provided as I finished my dissertation. It was an unexpected pleasure to work with lyricist Jack Feldman as I incorporated his lyrics into my final chapter. I am exceptionally grateful to Kenneth and Jack for their excitement regarding my project and their assistance in helping me weave such inspirational lyrics into the conclusion of my dissertation. My parents have always supported my love of history and the various forms it has taken. I can never viii repay my parents for their generosity in financing much of the travel and lodging associated with this work, or for their total understanding, encouragement, empathy, and faith. I am grateful for my late brother Mark who passed away unexpectedly one year prior to the completion of this project. Remembering my brother, memorializing his life, and fighting to keep memories of him and his contributions alive served as an unexpected catalyst in the writing of this dissertation as I began to understand, from a new vantage point, the cost of invisibility and the power of representation.

Mainland Americans huddled around their radios listening to the events unfold, while Hawaiians watched the Japanese Imperial Air Force drop bombs over their home. The United States was at war. Young men nationwide, including Lawson Sakai, a Japanese American college student in California, rushed to join the Armed Forces. On December 8, 1941 Lawson and three friends traveled to the nearest recruiting station to commit themselves to the United States Navy. Though his friends were accepted immediately, Sakai was delayed and eventually denied. “They told me I was an enemy alien!,” he remembered years later. 1 The recruiting officer’s reaction to Sakai’s attempted enlistment foreshadowed the intense racial discrimination that he and thousands of other Japanese Americans would face in the coming months. The Nisei, second-generation Japanese American citizens, viewed themselves as distinctly American. They had no connection to the imperial enemies who bombed their homeland and were determined to support the United States.

July 3, 2019 Overlooked is a series of obituaries about remarkable people whose deaths, beginning in 1851, went unreported in The Times. By Veronica Majerol When Ralph Lazo saw his Japanese-American friends being forced from their homes and into internment camps during World War II, he did something unexpected: He went with them. In the spring of 1942, Lazo, a 17-year-old high school student in Los Angeles, boarded a train and headed to the Manzanar Relocation Center, one of 10 internment camps authorized to house Japanese-Americans under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s executive order in the wake of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor a few months earlier. The camps, tucked in barren regions of the United States, would incarcerate around 115,000 people living in the West from 1942 to 1946 — two-thirds of them United States citizens. Unlike the other inmates, Lazo did not have to be there. A Mexican-American, he was the only known person to pretend to be Japanese so he could be willingly interned. What compelled Lazo to give up his freedom for two and a half years — sleeping in tar-paper-covered barracks, using open latrines and showers and waiting on long lines for meals in mess halls, on grounds surrounded by barbed-wire fencing and watched by guards in towers? He wanted to be with his friends.

    General Pediatrics GUIDELINE FOR DETERMINING HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH According to OHSP Policy 301 Scope and Authority of the RSRB, the RSRB has the authority to determine whether a project meets the criteria for human subject research. When the RSRB office is consulted to discuss the proposed activity, or when a project is submitted for RSRB review, RSRB staff make the determination whether HHS or FDA criteria for review apply. Investigators, study teams and RSRB staff will consider the definitions provided and then follow the procedures below for confirming this determination. The Human Subjects Research Determination Form (Appendix 1) may be used as a tool, as well as the HHS Human Subject Regulations Decision Charts. Definitions Human subject: a living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research (1) obtains information or biospecimens through intervention or interaction with the individual and uses, studies, or analyzes the information or biospecimens, OR (2) obtains, uses, studies, analyzes, or generates identifiable private information or identifiable biospecimens. a. Living Individual means specimens/data/information collected from living subjects.     Protecting Human Research Participants NIH Office of Extramural Research Introduction Research with human subjects can occasionally result in a dilemma for investigators. When the goals of the research are designed to make major contributions to a field, such as improving the understanding of a disease process or determining the efficacy of an intervention, investigators may perceive the outcomes of their studies to be more important than providing protections for individual participants in the research. Although it is understandable to focus on goals, our society values the rights and welfare of individuals. It is not considered ethical behavior to use individuals solely as means to an end. The importance of demonstrating respect for research participants is reflected in the principles used to define ethical research and the regulations, policies, and guidance that describe the implementation of those principles. Who? This course is intended for use by individuals involved in the design and/or conduct of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded human subjects research. What? This course is designed to prepare investigators involved in the design and/or conduct of research involving human subjects to understand their obligations to protect the rights and welfare of subjects in research. The course material presents basic concepts, principles, and issues related to the protection of research participants. Why? As a part of NIH's commitment to the protection of human subjects and its response to Federal mandates for increased emphasis on protection for human subjects in research, the NIH Office of Extramural Research released a policy on Required Education in the Protection of Human Research Participants in June 2000.

The massive-scale experiment manipulated the News Feeds of a large amount of Facebook users and was successful in proving that emotional contagion happens also in online environments. However, the experiment caused ethical concerns within and outside academia mainly for two intertwined reasons, the first revolving around the idea of research as manipulation, and the second focusing on the problematic definition of informed consent. The article concurs with recent research that the era of social media and big data research are posing a significant challenge to research ethics, the practice and views of which are grounded in the pre social media era, and reflect the classical ethical stances of utilitarianism and deontology.

Yuri Kochiyama and her family’s lives were forever altered after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Kochiyama’s father was picked up shortly after the bombing and imprisoned at a federal penitentiary for approximately 45 days. He was released back to the family and died 12 hours after his release. She remembers, …Never had a war come so close to this country and then eventually, of course, as it became a world war it affected the whole world. Until that time, I was just living a comfortable life, actually a middle class life in San Pedro. I wasn’t even aware of the terrible situation for Jews in Europe…By 1941, I had just finished junior college – two years. And as I said, I was not political and I was not socially aware. So it was like an abrupt kind of change when…President Roosevelt declared that all Japanese would have to be evacuated. It certainly changed our life. HOW DID SHE HANDLE THESE CHALLENGES? When her husband, Bill, went off to fight in the war with the highly decorated 442nd Regi- mental Combat Team, Kochiyama wrote to him three times a day for twenty-two months. He would receive so many letters that at times he would bury the letters in the trenches.
