    Sports recap: looking back at a brilliant weekend for our Pioneers Danielle Oberlander ‘21 takes a swing at the Wartburg College Invitational this past weekend where the team placed ninth. Photo contributed by Ted Schultz By Ezra Pine [email protected] Volleyball This past weekend, the undefeated volleyball team faced their biggest challenge yet, taking on Carleton College, Cornell College, and Luther College in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Tournament. In the first game against Carleton on Friday night, the Pioneers dropped the first set 19–25, but stormed back and won the next three sets 25–15, 25–19, 25–18. Later that night, though, the team had perhaps their biggest game of the season when they took on Cornell. They had lost to Cornell in every match for the past 18 years, and were hungry to put an end to that drought. They won a close first set 25–22, then took the next two sets 25–20, 25–17 to win the game and end the drought. On Saturday, the Pioneers beat Luther in three sets (25–19, 26–24, 25–18) to win the tournament. Kaylin Kuhn ’21 won MWC Offensive Performer of the Week for her breakout performance, averaging 5.33 kills per set over the weekend. The team, now 8–0, returns to action on Thursday night, when they play Simpson College at home. Football The football team put up a good fight against Lawrence University on Saturday, but ended up losing 28–0 in their first game of the season. Grinnell drove deep into Lawrence territory twice in the first half, but failed to capitalize on either of their opportunities.

    The courts are closed, the season canceled; Grinnell senior athletes share hopes and regrets On March 10, the Grinnell Athletic Department announced that it would cancel all spring programs as the College shut down the campus due to the impacts of COVID-19, a decision which players said left them feeling confused, angry and heartbroken. The athletic department announced their verdict two days before the NCAA officially suspended competition nationally. Men’s and women’s tennis were in the middle of their season with an 8-2 record and a 12-0 record, respectively. Baseball, softball, track and field and golf were also in-season. “I really feel like the administrators of our department let us down. They gave me no impression they fought for us,” said Brenda Guan ’20 of the women’s tennis team. The Grinnell Athletic Department held a meeting for all spring athletes on March 10, the same day the College announced its shift to “distance learning.” During this meeting, Assistant Athletic Director Ben Cooprider allowed students and coaches to voice their opinions and ask questions about the future of the rapidly changing semester. “The news of our season being cancelled was absolutely heart- breaking for me, our assistant coach and the rest of the team. While we saw the importance of doing our part to ‘flatten the curve,’ our students have given so much to the program over their 4 years and spent many years prior to coming to Grinnell honing their skills in preparation for college tennis,” said Paige Madara, head coach of men’s and women’s tennis.

By Papa Kojo Ampin-Darko [email protected] Grinnell College’s softball team began their conference preparations last weekend. With a mix of experienced players and fresh faces, they are excited about the prospect of a new season. Emily Jordan ‘19 is enthusiastic for the season ahead. “I feel really good. I think that the team is ready to get after it and have a really good season, make conference again and just generally build and improve on last season. I think [head coach] Lynn [Anderson] has prepared really well and I think the team in general has a pretty enthusiastic and hardworking attitude so I think we will do well,” she said. As a team captain, Jordan said she has the power to be a major influence on the team. “I just want to lead by example and make sure that I’m a consistent presence on the field and so that I can support and encourage my teammates in however they need me as well.” The Pioneers started their season last weekend with two tough games against highly ranked opposition, including University of St. Thomas, who are ranked seventh nationally. “I think the logic behind it is, basically, playing hard teams is going to make us … just more aggressive, and more heads up on the field … so when we do play conference games we’re already like at the level we need to be and … above the level that we need to be.

    Breaking up is hard to do: Kramer’s last hurrah Ah, dear reader, parting is such sweet sorrow. We’ve been through thick and thin together this year, but we stayed strong. From LaGarrette Blount decking that dude on Boise State who kind of deserved it to the Kansas Jayhawks’ epic dismantling of my Missouri Tigers and subsequent, equally epic loss to Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament, it’s been quite a ride. I’ve tried to be an engaging columnist, slipping in hipper references than a “Pitchfork” review and talking about teams in states that you’re from. My only hope for this column is that it has at least provoked an engaging discussion about sports for you and your friends, probably while you’re all drunk. But that’s OK—I know you still mean it. Some people think sports are part of a solipsistic, appearance-obsessed popular culture that interpolates the American people with the dominant discourses of capitalism, patriarchy and heteronormativity, and through distraction precludes consciousness of such issues. But to such effete quacks I say, “Huh?” Sports distract us from the drudgery of daily life not as some terrible opiate of the masses but rather as an enjoyable diversion and exploration of the human potential. For that, they should be appreciated. To that effect, I’ve tried to share my enjoyment of sports with you through this column, and I’ve been very flattered to hear some fans’ (tepid, sporadic) responses to my work. To echo Kunal’s sentiment from last week, yes, our columns have been great.
