DaVinci Pilot Newsletter of the U.S.S. DaVinci Columbus, Georgia Volume 16 Number 07 MARCH 2011 USS DAVINCI STAFF ROSTER FROM THE CENTER SEAT Commanding Officer This month the USS DaVinci will reach a VADM Freddy Heller (706) 562-TREK milestone not all Starfleet Chapters reach. On 16 Executive Officer March, we will be celebrating our 15 th anniversary COMM Russell Ruhland (334) 298-3998 as a Starfleet Chapter! Wow! Where has the time Operations Officer gone? I still remember the day in February of 1995 COMM Joe Perry (706) 327-5888 when, shortly after moving back to Columbus from Finance Officer COMM Connie Heller (706) 562-8735 Killeen, TX, I made inquires into starting a Starfleet Community Service Officer VACANT chapter in Columbus. Soon after, the Shuttle Publications Officer DaVinci was born. The 15 July, 1995 Vessel VADM Freddy Heller (706) 562-TREK Registration Request (VRR) for Shuttle status Science Officer contained the following seven names: ENS Lech Mazur (706) 596-9542 Counselor CMDR Freddy Heller LTJG Diane Ruhland (334) 298-3998 LTCMDR Connie Heller Computer Science Officer LTCMDR Joseph Perry ENS Leiko Koone (706) 616-5885 ENS Jeremy Winn Morale Officer ENS Karen Mutton ENS Dutch Cummings (706) 407-9945 Medical Officer ENS Dan Palmer COMM Jeff Kirkland (770) 253-6474 Cadet Travis Grisham Engineering Officer CPT Josh Ainsworth (706) 326-3042 Although the USS DaVinci was my first choice Communications Officer for a name, there were two other names on the LTJG Randy Dunn (334) 291-0150 request sent to the Starfleet Office of Vehicle Quartermaster VACANT Registry. My second choice was the USS Magellan Records Officer VACANT and my third choice was the USS Amelia Earhart. Security Chief VACANT At first I was going to have the DaVinci be a Galaxy Cadet Corps Commander VACANT Class starship but when Voyager premiered, I loved Senior Chief Petty Officer VACANT the design of the Intrepid Class starship and went in that direction instead. UPCOMING EVENTS Following our official launch, the Shuttle DaVinci **21 March, Night Out at Country’s BBQ on went hard to work attracting more Starfleet members Whittlesey, 7:00 PM to her ranks. We needed 10 Starfleet members to be **19 March, USS DaVinci’s 15 th Anniversary Party, eligible for full chapter status. By the time we were 2:00 PM commissioned (along with the USS Okatoma) at the first Region 2 Sunny Summit, we had 18 Starfleet members on board. Of the original 18 members, only 4 are still part of the USS DaVinci – Connie, Travis, Joe, and myself. Here are a few photos of those early days! Our first Night Out at the Macon Road Bonanza. (09 Oct 1995) Jeremy Winn and – gasp! – is that Joe on the right? This was our very first membership drive at Walden Books (24 June 1995) Randy and Matthew at the Night Out. (16 March 1996) Not a bad turn out for our first meeting! On Saturday, 19 March, at 2:00 PM, we will be having our annual anniversary party. The club will supply the pizza. If you wish to bring some sort of side dish or dessert, please feel free to do so. This is a “bring your own drink” affair and there is no sign up sheet. However, **PLEASE** let me know if you plan on attending so that I can get an idea as to how many pizzas to order. Eleven crew personnel attended the February Night Out at Johnny’s NY Style Pizza and all agreed that it was some of the best food yet! I had their pizza and I have to admit (even being a die-hard Little Caesar’s lover) that it is probably the best pizza in town. The winner of the free dinner was Connie! Lech and Margaret chat with Connie and Ariana. A large pizza with Canadian bacon and extra cheese! Mummmm! Ariana and Connie talk about a shirtless Jacob. Sandy and Randy chat with Lisa and Steve. Joe and Jonathan pose for the camera. Up and going again at about 7:30 AM on Saturday we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast buffet at an incredible discount offered to members at the con. I managed to stuff myself with the usual eggs, bacon, and sausage (sorry Freddy, no omelets) and a Belgian waffle. Diane was the smart one and ate light with some cut fruit. Anyway, we proceeded to the autograph table and got my signed photos for the collection of the Trek Trax guests, Tim Russ (Tuvok on Voyager) and Barbara March and Gwynyth Walsh, the Duras sisters (Lursa and B'Etor) from TNG and other Trek series/movie fame. I picked up on some nice goodies from the Dealers Room and then we And so do Steve and Lisa! attended a panel on costuming and the Duras sister’s panel. A BIG Bajoran thanks to all the folks who It was very pleasant to attend a panel with a attended our first Night Out at Johnny’s NY Style female Trek duo for a change and the ladies both Pizza. I am sure it will not be the last!! showed wonderful personality as well as hinting to us that they will be doing at least the next few VADM Freddy Heller Creation sponsored conventions, dressing as the Duras sisters in full Klingon gear. Look out, Martok and Gowron, you've got some competition now! EXECUTIVELY SPEAKING A little while later I attended a Star Trek Universe Trek Trax Atlanta is a new convention being held costume contest where, well, let me say this, in Georgia's capitol city for the first time this year Klingons and Vulcans and Trekkies, oh my! There during the President's Day weekend in February. were twenty or so entries and some were very Diane & I made the voyage with relative ease, convincing. I really thought that the "Holograph stopping at the Palmetto, GA exit for lunch and Data" from the Dixon Hill TNG episode would have finding to our surprise a restaurant I did not know won for sure but the judges had other ideas and gave existed, which featured various cuisine from first place to a TOS female version of Spock. Dinner was served as we enjoyed a meal at the NEXT DAVINCI NIGHT OUT AND hotel dining room and although the service was MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE AT extremely slow (why lie about it?), the meal itself was awesome. After supper we decided to go back COUNTRY’S BARBEQUE to the room and call it for the day, stopping for a (WHITTLESLY ROAD LOCATION) moment to speak with Mike Henigan, who was ON MONDAY 21 MARCH AT 7:00 PM assisting as a member of the convention staff. COME FOR THE FOOD AND FRIENDSHIP!! Diane and I decided to go to a panel on Trek related uniforms that the panelists used to gently critique those who were in their costumes. I saw a really well done Romulan (no, not cooked like in Nemesis) and some rather nice looking TOS female costumes. After this panel we had to tour the Dealers Room one last time and then it was off to the 2011 Miss Klingon Beauty Pageant. Five contestants made their way down the aisle for judging in beauty (Klingons and beauty, isn't that an oxymoron?), talent and personality. The winner was well chosen and the day ended with our farewells and hopes to attend this convention again next year. Our shuttle docked at home around 7:30 PM. Klingon couple getting married! Sunday brought to us another great breakfast and we attended an early morning spiritual discussion with the representatives of Fans for Christ, an organization devoted to those who have both religion and science fiction fandom a part of their ongoing lives. I actually had the opportunity to meet some other members of Starfleet that actually read my article in the CQ ("they like me, they really like me!”). Sunday afternoon brought with it the Tim Russ (Tuvok) panel. We had front row seating and this actor also was well personified and had an excellent sense of humor. Eric Watts at the Miss Klingon Pageant. Tim Russ (Tuvok) at the convention. Qapla! The winner!
