Set in Vienna, this program offers more than stunning art, world-class music, and beautiful narrow alleyways. It is also home to some of ’s most important business, education, and diplomatic institutions. This study abroad with optional work experience lets you explore both sides of Vienna and experience the best of both worlds!

You do not need to speak German to participate in this program, but it will be more meaningful if you have had at least one semester. The work experiences, if you choose one, are tailored to the interests and abilities of the student. Past students have worked in schools, art museums, and institutions for music. Some have worked in local or international businesses, and others have worked with refugee organizations and NGOs. What are your goals? Let’s see if Vienna can help you reach them.

You will be living with host families, learning German, studying history and culture, and gaining real-life job experience. In addition, we will take time off to enjoy the green Alpine valleys, the Baroque masterpieces of Salzburg, and the timeless beauty of Hallstatt. Then we will venture out beyond Austria’s borders to visit , the Czech Republic, and . Vienna is a major European crossroad, and a thousand different adventures start in the heart of this city. HOUSING The Austro-American Institute of Education in Vienna arranges housing with non-LDS Viennese hosts for pairs of students, providing insight into Austrian culture. AAIE-arranged hosts will provide breakfast daily and one evening meal each week.

COURSES Required 12 credit hours of BYU courses Beginning (GERM 102), intermediate (German 201/202/211) or advanced German (301, 302, 303, 311) based group needs. GERM 399R (3–6 credits) Internship GERM 345R/440R German Opera and Theater in Vienna (3 credit hours)- fulfills GE Letters requirement REL C 350 LDS Church in a World Setting (2 credit hours) FNART 270R European Fine Arts (3 credit hours) - fulfills GE Arts requirement

COST $8,600–9,100

Includes LDS undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduates and non-LDS students) and international health insurance. Also included are several group activities in Vienna and at least 4 trips out of town: (1) Melk Monastery and a twenty-mile bike ride along the Danube River; (2) a 5-day excursion to Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Dorfgastein; (3) a 4-day excursion Poland; (4) a 6-day excursion to Prague, Dresden, the Freiberg Temple and Berlin.

Not included: airfare, meals beyond breakfast, personal expenses such as souvenirs and non-program related entrance fees. Some low-cost meals are available in Vienna, including two dinners per week in the LDS Outreach Center, payable by the student.

PREPARATION Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201R, 1.0 credit hour). This class will be held Friday at 4:00–6:00 p.m. during the second block of winter semester 2019. Part-time BYU students and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee.

FUNDING SOURCES Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid. Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Scholarship money is available to ALL students with a major or minor in the Humanities. Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

FACULTY Prof Brewer loves traveling, reading books and learning languages. She speaks exclusively German to her kids and all 11 of them are multilingual. She will be bringing 6 of her children (ages 8-16) and probably a couple nieces and nephews too. Plan on being part of one big family, hanging out at her apartment, and speaking German with her kids. SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT Our program is less than 90 days. Students who wish to stay in Europe longer than 90 days must obtain a Schengen visa on their own. Parents are not to visit students during the official program time period. Students should not plan late arrivals to the host country, and they should plan to stay the entire length of the program. Married couples may attend the program BUT both must be current full-time students who are enrolled in the program.
