Hebrew Roots Heresy (Part 1) The Perversion of ‘Repentance’ By Tim Warner © www.4windsfellowships.net It is remarkable that one of the most serious errors that infected early Christianity, that was officially renounced by the Jerusalem council,1 and was so soundly refuted by the Apostle Paul in Galatians, could make the kind of come-back that we see today. Yet is spreads like cancer among God’s people. JETS 61.1 (2018): 5–25 EVANGELICALISM’S SEARCH FOR CHRONOLOGICAL GAPS IN GENESIS 5 AND 11: A HISTORICAL, HERMENEUTICAL, AND LINGUISTIC CRITIQUE JEREMY SEXTON* Abstract: This article sheds historical light on William Henry Green’s influential article -translated “be) ילד Primeval Chronology” (1890), establishes the meaning of the hiphil of“ gat” in the AV) throughout Genesis 5 and 11, and analyzes Andrew Steinmann’s recent case for chronological gaps. Interpreters did not challenge the chronological intent of the Genesis ge- nealogies until the ascendancy of Darwinism in the 1860s. Green’s article became the most famous attempt to disrupt the timeline. As a young scholar, Green had ardently defended the chronology, but prevailing scientific claims finally compelled him to abandon this conviction. Re- cent scholarship (as well as a censored article from the mid-1890s) has demonstrated that Green only showed the possibility of genealogical gaps, which do not entail chronological gaps. Steinmann bases his unprecedented argument for chronological gaps on an idiosyncratic seman- that contradicts the consensus among (ילד tics of causation (which he applies to the hiphil of Hebraists and other linguists. God is described as the Creator and the process of His creation is shown in the first two chapters of Genesis. This paper will address what the Bible says about creation, including who created, how creation occurred and when creation occurred. We believe that God communicated truthfully about the creation account in Genesis 1-2. We also believe that God’s Word is the final source of authority on all matters that it touches, including how all things were made. In other words, we believe what God says is more important than what anyone else says about the creation of the universe. If this view of the Bible is not accepted, then the following presentation will carry no weight. Before we address the teaching of the Bible on the subject of creation, we must agree on the significance of what it teaches. We have designed this paper with the understanding that the reader accepts the authority of the Word of God. God created all things That God is the Creator of all is taught throughout the Bible. 1. God created the heavens and the earth (Psalm 33:6; Jonah 1:9; Jeremiah 32:17; Revelation 14:7). 2. God created all that is in the heavens and the earth (Nehemiah 9:6; Revelation 10:6; Acts 14:15). 3. In the previous chapter, we saw sin’s immediate consequences. Adam and Eve realized they were naked, they hid from God, and God punished them for their sins. In this section of Genesis, we see the longer-term consequences of sin—how it just seems to get worse and worse. The scope of Genesis 4-11 is the “big picture”: instead of the earth being filled with representatives of God, the earth is filled with the consequences of sin. Nevertheless, God’s grace abounds even in the face of our sin. Glimpses of his mercy are evident amid this big picture of the spread of sin with Seth, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and this prepares the way for the zeroed in focus beginning in chapter 12 on Abraham, who will bring blessings to the nations. The Big Picture The fall initiates a downward spiral of sin, beginning with Cain’s murder of Abel and culminating in the Tower of Babel. Lombaard1 ABSTRACT The three genealogies in Genesis 4:17-22, 4:25-26 en 5:1-32 show different intentions: the first wants (amongst other purposes) to give an aetiology of the trades; the second wants to stress the importance of a new beginning; the third wants to relate Adam to Noah. Each of these approaches to genealogy has a different intent; each wants to in- dicate a different aspect of God’s care. Each thus evidences an own (though not unre- lated) configuration of faith experienced, that is, a different spirituality. 1. OF FAITH IN OLD TESTAMENT TIMES, THE STUDY OF SPIRITUALITY, AND GENEALOGY SCHOLARSHIP Recent Old Testament scholarship has increasingly become aware of the variety of configurations of faith within ancient Israel. This diversity does not involve only a rather straightforward growth in the faith of Israel from one form of belief in God to, presumably, a more advanced form of belief in God. Such a heilsgeschichtliche approach — in the earlier sense of the term (cf. Mildenberger 2000:1585) — would be akin to the concept of progressive revelation, a view which regarded Old Testament history as a process of divine education of the Israelite nation (Rogerson 1988:537; cf. also Lombaard 2003:441). Rather, Old Testament scholarship has made us increasingly aware of different forms of faith within ancient Israel at different times, also with such different expressions competing with one another at the same time. Gerhard Hasel’s term chronogenealogy captures a major aspect of that uniqueness: they are genealogies with a major chronological component.1 By including ages at the birth of each named son, the number of years each individual lived after begetting that son, and the stated or implied total years of life for each individual, the two genealogies appear to provide a means by which to calculate the approximate number of years from Adam to Abraham.2 For 1Gerhard F. Chronological data is occasionally found in other genealogical material (Ex 6:16, 18, 20; 1 Chron 2:21); the significance of these ‘rarities’ will be explored at a later point in this paper. 2Bishop Ussher famously did just that—with injudicious precision!—in the mid-seventeenth century. But it is a pity that his name alone is so often cited in this respect, with the implication that using the chronological details of Gen 5 and 11 to estimate time since creation is to follow in his steps.
