Christmas Fayre

Our Christmas Fayre was a huge success with £850 being raised by the PSA to go towards special events such as the Year 1 to 6 cinema trip and new resources and furniture for the Reception and Nursery children.

Thank you to all of those who entered the first ever “Great St Mewan Cake Off!” Our judges, Lee and Ryan from Nile’s Bakery had a very difficult time choosing the winners from the adult and junior entries. Congratulations to Zoe Edwards and Becky Frater who won the adult competition and to Lilly Ratty-Ford and Megan Richards who won the Junior section. The win- ners of the Christmas hampers will be announced on Friday 15th December.

NUMBER THIEF!

There has been a number thief in Reception! Luckily, the children put on their detective hats to work out the missing numbers and Sargeant Hamley helped solved the crime.

We had lots of number learning going on, both inside and outside, and the children were so enthused! Did you hear all about it at home? Mrs Best, Reception Classteacher Cornwall Sustainability Awards

We were absolutely thrilled when we heard that our “Action on School Congestion” Campaign had been shortlisted as a finalist at this year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Although the project did not win the overall prize, it did receive a special mention on the night and our representatives, Zoe Howard, who headed the campaign and School Governor, Greg Slater, were delighted to receive a beautiful trophy in the form of “Hazard” and “Wheeler” the mascots associated with our lottery funded project.

Thank you to Zoe and Greg for attending the award ceremony on behalf of our school.

SPORT Rugby All three St Mewan rugby teams played fantastically well at Biscovey on Monday 4th December. The conditions were perfect for fast flowing rugby and all children involved represented the school brilliantly.

The A Team losing by just one try 4-5, the B Team winning both of their matches and the C Team winning one and drawing one.

Football On Friday 1st December the St Austell Schools District football team took part in the ESFA Inter-Association County Finals Competition against Schools District. The team won the series of matches played and are now through to the next stage of the competition that will be played on April 21st in Bristol. This will be against the best schools across the whole of the South West. St Mewan School has two representatives in the team, Mr Boynton (Manager) and Callum Penrose (Captain).

We are now over half way through the football season, with only three games remaining in the league. All three teams have done really well so far, even with lots of rotation between the teams. This highlights the talent and ability of all of the players who have been representing the school.

Our next game will be against Biscovey in the new year, with our A Team potentially one more win away from clinching the title.

Netball Last Tuesday the A and B teams played in difficult conditions against Mount Charles. The A team lost 6-3, which was a much improved performance from earlier in the season. Unfortunately, the B team had to play through rain, wind and hail. They lost the game, but did well to continue competing until the very end. Fixtures commence again on 8th January.

Year 6 Writers’ Block Trip

On Wednesday, 20 of our Year 6 children attended a writing workshop at the Writers’ Block in Pool. They worked with an author, Wyl, to generate excit- ing ideas that they can use back at school to create amazing pieces of writing.

The children were inspired by their surroundings, which included books sculpted into the most fantastic pieces of artwork and lots of wardrobes containing strange and interesting artefacts.

Art Afternoon

On Monday 4th November, the pupils from Years 5 and 6 paired-up with their buddy class in Years 1 and 2. We were given a painting called “The Drum Bridge and Yuhi Hill at Meguro” by Hiroshige to recreate in any style we wished. Each class used different materials to create the painting such as collage, painting and charcoal.

It was lots of fun but quite messy! We really enjoyed working with the younger children in the school and loved developing friendships with them. If you would like to see our paintings, they are on display in the hall.

Christopher Columbus Travels The World

On Tuesday, our Junior children were visited by Mrs Pam Priestly, grandmother of Abi in Year 6. Pam is setting off on the adventure of a lifetime in January as she is going on a world cruise for four months. Pam will be taking a mascot with her on her journey - Christopher Columbus the Cornish seagull - and will be sending us updates and photos of him as he travels around the world with her.

We will track Pam and Christopher’s progress every week in Junior assembly and we have a world map on display in the hall so that the children can see all the exciting places they will be visiting.

A huge thank you to Pam for sharing this experience with our pupils. Mrs E Badger, Head of School
