AUGUST 2019

The Riverdale NEWSLETTER YM-YWHA Senior Center I am very appreciative of all the members who extended their good wishes while I was out on medical leave for the past two months. I have missed everyone and am glad to be getting back to work. I am using Access-a-Ride, the MTA’s paratransit service, to get to appointments, work and around the City while I recuperate from orthopedic surgery. Because of my work experience with older adults, I anticipated many problems. Instead, my experience has been very good and, upon reflec- tion, I realize that my staff and I no longer troubleshoot the volume of problems, delays, and no shows that our members used to experience. This is because Access-a-Ride now contracts with livery car companies, instead of utilizing a limited number of passenger vans, to transport disabled people who do not require accessible vehicles. Newer technology has also played a role in the im- provements. If you are disabled, even temporarily like me, you can start the application process by calling 877 337-2017. If you need assistance, our social work staff can help you. The Y has embarked on a year long program to evaluate and improve our inclusivity with the LGBTQ community. We are starting with cultural competency training for all agency staff. Addi- tionally, each department including the Senior Center, will be formally assessing all aspects of their programs. The goal is to ensure that individuals who identify as LGBTQ are made to feel wel- come and that we have the capacity to address unmet needs for those individuals who wish to avail themselves of our programs or services. Feel free to see me or Lydia, our Social Worker, if you would like more information or to be involved in our efforts. Farewell to Jamee Adams, our Safe-at-Home Coordinator. Jamee left in July to prepare for her move to California at the end of the Summer. Her position will be filled in August. Thank you to this year’s Summer Youth Employees who have been working in the dining room. We hope their job experience has been rewarding. Our DOROT teen interns are also wrapping up a rewarding four weeks. Check out the special intergenerational programs in the New and Note- worthy section.

Hope to see you at the Y soon. Staff News Sharon Asherman, LMSW New and Noteworthy at the Center

A NOTE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER

“TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF”

How many times has someone said that to you—or have you said that to a dear friend or relative? Take Care of Yourself. We mean it but do we consider what that really means? Literally, “if I don’t take care of myself, who will?” Coming to the Senior Center is a good start. We’ve surrounded ourselves with a variety of good, interesting people. We have an extraordinary number of classes and activities which support and promote our efforts in self-care. I look at the monthly array of classes offered to address our mental and physical well-being: Nu- trition (incredible lunches), multiple exercise choices, philosophical reflection, history, politics, music/theatre/arts/crafts, brain games, bingo, movies, day trips, etc…. The point is…how many of these classes do you take advantage of? Do you take the opportunity to be stimulated by familiar and/or new ideas? Do you sometimes sit with people you don’t know very well? When we were school children, we expected to learn something new every day, to possibly make a new friend every day. We were being prepared to become useful adults. There is a magic to being exposed to new ideas and new people. Now, at this time, at this place, we have the time to continue & do it over & over again. Keep attending your favorite classes and then try a new one. Enjoy the established friendships and then make new ones. Get your annual (FREE) physical check-up at your doctor’s and stay active here as well. There’s plenty of joy to share together. Today is a good day! Take care of yourself!
