MISSION STATEMENT _ To Grow in Christ To Share His Love .r,^ e^-,,^ rri. \r/^-tn Pastor's Page ooO for Grace"

As we swing into the November ofthis year we arc brought face to face with many ofthe paradoxes that keep life wonderful, mysterious, painful, uncertain, and remind us ofthe continuous cycles that have been created in our lives, cultures, spiritual lives and even our national life. Our landscapes become ablaze with the brilliance ofthe season, only to shed that bdlliance and settle into what often seems a barrenness ofwinter hues. This sewes as a reminder ofthe cycles oftife and death built into the scheme of creation. We reflect oo seasons ofour lives, and pause to pondff the cha[ges they bring. October gives way to November, and we pause to remember and honor those who have seNed our nation in the various bmnches ofmilitary service. For many, those remembrances are painful, for we are touched by memories ofthose who have paid the ultimate price for thei brave service. Many of our yearly observances and celebrations are tempered by realities ofthe cost ofour freedom and safety, and rightly so. Beforc we ease out ofNovember, we are assaulted by harbingers ofthe Christmas season, usuaily put forth by the retaii establishments seeking to remove us ftom a significant pofiion ofour financial assets. But before that happens, we are called to make political choices for our municipalities and oIIrnation. The bombardment ofads, slogans, debates, posteN, flyerc and signs makes the Chrishnas onslaught seem tike a walk in the park! As with the Chrishnas season, the eiection season is a time when truth is often overshadowed by giitter, legends, misinformation, geed, and pdvate agendas The other day a newspaper referred to it as the "mean season" and rightly so. For many Americais, the hcrcdible privilege of participation in the electoral process brings with it a passion that gives way to an ugliness of spirit which produces attacks on people, not policies; intentional mistruths and half-kuths designed to deceive, not convince; disagreements on political agendas that lead to hatred and di$espect; loss ofability to work out disagreements to the attitude of"my way or no way." It indeed can be a mean season. As Christians, such seasons challenge our own attitudes, colduct, and cail to be loving, even toward those with whom we might disagree. We are called to participate in earthly living with a view ofthe kingdom as our foundation. We are reminded that faith cannot be legislated, and no political party has amonopoly on God's agenda for ourpeople. Also, God's righteous puposes are never attained through hatred, personal attacks, deceptions and the like. Wlerever you may stand on the potiticat spectrum, remember that there are deeply committed lovers ofJesus who stand at various other points ofthe spectrum. In this "mean season" the gospel ofthe Prince ofPeace calls on believers to set and follow heavenly standards oflove, commu:rication' and tolerance lbr varying points ofview. It is my prayer that we will be above all peacemakers, allowing God's Spirit to shine in all conversations ard attitudes. Ifyour candidate wins, rejoice! Ifyour opposition wins the vote, handie it iD wa)s suited to a child ofthe King. Paul advised the Colossians, "Let the peace ofchrist ru1e in your hearts, silce as one body you were called to peace." From our hearts, may the peace of Cbrist extend to our minds, be offered aom our lips, and be seell through our actions. Pray for our nation: not for your agenda for our nation, but for those who are chosen to lead at various levels ofpublic service. I learned many yeaIs ago that it is impossible to hate those for whom we offer our prayers The Spirit of God will not allow it!

Yours for Truth, Compassion ard Justice in the mean season and all seasons, fl*) .tuotulE g\rs IyfiM s TKIES

I oti r^n^--,:-- Gove Hill Trip - September 29 & 30, 2O12

22 members and friends of WaMick Central enjoyed a wonderful weekend of fellowship and relaxation at the Gove Hill Retreat Center in Thetford, Vermont. Although much of the weekend was drizzling on and off, we enjoyed browsing between the raindrops in many of the interesting shops in nearby Woodstock and Quechee Gorge, hiking on the Gove Hill property, flshing, or just relaxing in front of the fireplace. As always, a number of our group played a number of different games and there was a big puzzle being worked on all weekend. We even had a little line dancing on Friday evening!

Once again, we enjoyed wonderful meals prepared by Bill and Bernice, the caretakers of thls American Baptist Churches of Vermont property (Gove Hill ls to VT. and NH Baptists what Camp Canonicus is to RI Baptists.)

Rev. Dave and Chris O'Brien drove down from Burlington and joined us for Saturday night dinner and devotions. It was great to see them once again! Saturday night devotions were organized by Keith Nelson and Heather Lindsay. The focus was on our fall theme of"The Church is Family" After scrlpture and reflection, the larger group broke into smaller groups and each came up with different words to describe the attributes of family.

After being dormant for the past year due to insufficient staffing, the Pastoral Relations Committee, (now known as the Pastoral Relations Team) is once again up and running and ready to conduct its responsibilities as ouflined in the Church By-Laws. Those responsibilities are to help promote constructive communications between the congregation and its pastoral leadership as well as implement the congregation's responsibility for its pastor's professional and personal well-being including an annual review ofthe Pastor's compensation package. The Pastoral Relations Team takes its role seriously to be an advocate of constructive dialogue between the pastor and the congregation as we make our Christian journey together. We look forward to being a helpful two way sounding board to both the pastor and the congregation. Our first priorities are to work with the Finance Team as the 2013 budget is prepared and to start work on a Pastoral Survey planned for early 2013. Please feel free to contact us with any comments, concerns, or questions you may have. We look forward to your thoughtful input. Your Pastoral Relations Team members are: Dan Walker, (team leader) Lynne Linden, and Dave Maine. Yours in Ghrist's service, Dan, Lynne, and Dave
