DUNDEE UNITED ON THIS DAY JANUARY 11 Dundee United On This Day THURSDAY 1st JANUARY 2015 A great start to 2015 as United thump Dundee in the new year derby at Tannadice, in front of 13,000 fans. Stuart Armstrong deflects a Chris Erskine shot into the Dundee net in the first minute, and an Erskine strike and a Gary Mackay-Steven double make it 4-1 by half-time. Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer add two more in the second half, and the 6-2 final score puts United third in the Premiership, just three points behind Aberdeen and two behind Celtic. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1913 Dumbarton are the new year’s day visitors at Tannadice, but, although a railway special brings 300 fans through from the west coast, The Dundee Evening Telegraph reports that very few of them make it to the game, presumably as a side effect of their new year celebrations. The Dumbarton players, on the other hand, show no sign of any hangover as they start brightly in a match full of chances, but Dundee Hibernian – as the club were called before changing their name to United – come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3. THURSDAY 2nd JANUARY 1958 United beat East Stirling 7-0. Jimmy Brown and Wilson Humphries both grab doubles, and Allan Garvie, Willie McDonald and Joe Roy score once each. Twenty-year-old Aberdonian defender Ron Yeats makes his debut in the match. He features prominently for United for four seasons, before, in 1961, he’s sold for £30,000 to Liverpool, where he becomes hugely influential and plays over 450 games.

  • Football's Lost Decade
FOOTBALL’S Contrary to what Sky might have you believe, football existed before 1992. In fact the 1980s saw cultural and political change that shaped the modern game. But while LOST football wasn’t cool, some of us still loved it. Jon Howe looks back with nostalgia DECADE at the decade that football forgot... A game you might have forgotten November 8, 1980 n Leeds United 0 Arsenal 5 While Leeds fans of the modern era have fresh memories of humiliating home defeats dished out by the football colossi of Blackpool, Watford, Nottingham Forest and Preston, such a public dishonouring on our own doorstep rarely occurred during the 1960s and ’70s, even as Revie’s great side began to break up and the club descended into that murky tunnel called “transition”. That all changed, of course, when the clock ticked over into the 1980s. The visit of Arsenal found Leeds slowly finding their feet after that legendary sniffer of all things loose in the penalty area, Allan Clarke, had taken over as manager. Leeds were struggling to find the net and Clarke shored up his defence before worrying Leeds manager Allan Clarke with his assistant Martin Wilkinson. about being too expansive Eddie at the other end. It was a his most productive season in an Arsenal shirt with 16 league Gray somewhat uncharacteristic appearances – picked at Leeds’ failings and executed a stance for one of the club’s stunning 5-0 win that left Elland Road dumbstruck. greatest goalscorers, but one Leeds were 2-0 down by half-time with young goalkeeper that few argued with.

Photo: Dom Henry LeftLion Magazine Issue 42 contents August - September 2011 editorial Welcome to the latest edition of the most graphic thing to read in Nottingham since they pulled down them bogs at the bottom end of the Square. I loved them bogs. Why they didn’t knock ‘em together and turn ‘em into a club, with the caretaker’s offices as DJ booths, I’ll never know. Ooh ahh yeah, I remember now – because it stank of wazz. Eeh, it did my scabby Nottingham heart good to see so many salt-of-the-earth Notts sorts fill out Rock City to see the local talent geein’ it 06 08 18 some on the main stage – and it’s a pleasure to give over a page to The Money, who – as I write – are opening up proceedings in front of thousands of bods at Spendour.
