Sonae food business nearly triples wholesale markets in 2015

SONAE MC EXPANDS EXPORTATIONS TO 28 COUNTRIES

Sonae MC exported its brands’ products to 28 countries during the first nine months of 2015, strongly expanding its international presence. Sonae’s food retail unit has nearly tripled its exportation markets when compared to the total of 2014, a year in which the wholesale activity reached 10 geographies.

Luís Moutinho, CEO of Sonae MC, states, ‘Sonae has been investing in innovation, research and development with the purpose of reinforcing the value proposition for its clients. As a result, we have managed to create and provide consumers with high quality products, which contribute to the leadership of our insignias in , namely . However, the success of our brands and products is crossing our boundaries and attracting the interest of other retailers throughout the world, which has led to the accelerated growth of our exportation markets.’

Sonae’s food retail unit exported to countries in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, combining mature markets with countries currently undergoing a strong economic growth. Among the exported brands are Continente, Continente Gourmet, É Continente, Área Viva, Contemporal, Kasa and Makenotes.

As part of its internationalization strategy, last quarter Sonae MC also signed a franchising agreement with the Fathima Group, a conglomerate that operates in multiple sectors of the United Arab Emirates, to establish Continente in the region by 2017.

‘Sonae MC’s investment in wholesale and franchising is in line with Sonae’s internationalization strategy, which looks to explore the exceptional assets’ base and innovation ability detained in Portugal through light capital expansion models. The celebrated agreements open new paths for development and will contribute to strengthen Sonae MC’s internationalization, as well as our national economy.
