  • Introduction to Gender-Balanced Inbreeding
Gender-Balanced Inbreeding in the Pedigrees of Outstanding Runners by Kathleen Irwin Most people understand the concept of inbreeding when it comes to Thoroughbred pedigrees. Anytime an ancestor appears more than once in the 5-cross pedigree, this is called "inbreeding." The following example shows a horse inbred to Danzig. (See colored blocks) Gender-balanced inbreeding occurs when the ancestor appears as the progenitor of offspring of both genders in the pedigree of the subject animal. For instance, a Northern Dancer son in one part of the pedigree and a Northern Dancer daughter in another part. Or to go one better, a Northern Dancer son producing a daughter, and a Northern Dancer daughter producing a son. When perusing pedigrees, I often see successful runners which have resulted from one Northern Dancer sire line over another Northern Dancer sire line, and there is nothing wrong with that. But it is my experience that a sort of vigor and stability is added when opposing genders are woven into the tapestry of inbreeding. In the Animal Kingdom pedigree above, you see that his Lyphard inbreeding is actually beautifully balanced by gender. The first Lyphard produces a daughter who produces a son. The second appearance of Lyphard shows him producing a son who produces a daughter. French Derby and Guineas winner Lope De Vega possesses a similar pedigree exhibiting gender-balanced inbreeding. This time, the duplicated individual is French Champion Machiavellian. It is interesting to note that Machiavellian himself has a gender-balanced pedigree, which you can see at this PedigreeQuery link. Another excellent runner with gender-balanced inbreeding is Prized.

  • Pedigrees: a Practical Approach
Pedigrees: A Practical Approach TOBA Pedigree & Conformation Clinic Saratoga Springs, NY Suzi Shoemaker, Lantern Hill Farm 1 Ordway Pampered Princess Dreaming of Anna Capt. Candyman Can Welcome to Saratoga and TOBA’s pedigree clinic. I’m Suzi Shoemaker, of Lantern Hill Farm in Midway, KY. This morning I’ll discuss current thoroughbred breeding trends and encourage you to use practical horsemanship in your pedigree evaluations for breeding or buying thoroughbreds. I’ve been privileged to make my living breeding and selling racing thoroughbreds since graduating college and moving to KY from upstate NY in 1978. Along the way I’ve bred, raised or sold the likes of Eclipse Champion Dreaming of Anna, as well as Grade 1 winners Capt. Candyman Can, Pampered Princess and Ordway. 2 Hepburn and HER SMILE (G-1) in 2008 I’ve also been fortunate to care for horses for some of the country’s leading race horse breeders, and benefitted from living with their mares and foals and seeing diverse breeding philosophies put to the test. The best recent example of that is Mr. William Backer’s mating of Include to Capote’s daughter Hepburn which produced 2011 Grade 1 Prioress Stakes winner Her Smile. And while money from horses I bred and sold funded the purchase of two farms, I now have the great fortune to race some home-breds and find out first hand how certain traits fall out of pedigrees onto the race track. 3 Variability is decreasing in our gene pools Worldwide dominance of Northern Dancer-Mr. Prospector cross Increased book sizes for small number of Kentucky stallions Few new imports of outcross sires Speaking from that perspective, I’d like to share three observations about today’s pedigrees that might help you succeed at the track or the sales.
