Re-Tweeting Election #ge11 Aodhán O Ríordáin TD 1 Re-Tweeting Election #ge11 Introduction The 2011 General Election was the first Twitter Election in Ireland. The appetite for increased engagement, accountability and interaction via the social media platform followed the resignation of Defence Minister Willie O’Dea in February 2010, in part because of a carefully composed tweet. By January 2011, Twitter was part of the daily political discourse, as candidates posted their thoughts, policies, pictures and links in the competitive war to raise profiles and attract eyeballs. The beauty of Twitter is that it allows your ‘followers’ to view you in a different lens from the normal political script, and to engage with you on a variety of topics political, personal, trivial and even philosophical. It also allows politicians break some news at appropriate times, and share views on national events without the constraints of a formal press release. This ebook is based on all the tweets published over the course of the General Election campaign, from the announcement of Labour’s motion of no confidence in the government to the day of the election result. It is important to consider that the commentary on the tweets was completed in the months immediately after the election in February 2011, when my memory of events and emotions was still raw and fresh, and not two years later. Therefore, the commentary provided is frozen in 2011 and has not been altered to take account of two years in government and developments in 2013. The tweets and reflections are frozen in time.

  • Transformative Illegality: How Condoms 'Became Legal' in Ireland
Feminist Legal Studies (2018) 26:261–284 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10691-018-9392-1 Transformative Illegality: How Condoms ‘Became Legal’ in Ireland, 1991–1993 Máiréad Enright1 · Emilie Cloatre2 Published online: 20 November 2018 © The Author(s) 2018 Abstract This paper examines Irish campaigns for condom access in the early 1990s. Against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis, activists campaigned against a law which would not allow condoms to be sold from ordinary commercial spaces or vending machines, and restricted sale to young people. Advancing a conception of ‘transformative ille- gality’, we show that illegal action was fundamental to the eventual legalisation of commercial condom sale. However, rather than foregrounding illegal condom sale as a mode of spectacular direct action, we show that tactics of illegal sale in the 1990s built on 20 years of everyday illegal sale within the Irish family planning movement. Everyday illegal sale was a long-term world-making practice, which gradually trans- formed condoms’ legal meanings, eventually enabling new forms of provocative and irreverent protest. Condoms ‘became legal’ when the state recognised modes of con- dom sale, gradually built up over many years and publicised in direct action and in the courts. Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung News Summary London Office Top Story Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has ruled out a Border poll following the Brexit referendum. He told the Seanad that although he understood the motivations of those who called for a referendum, for such a poll to be held, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland must determine that a majority of the electorate would opt for a united Ireland. At present, there was no evidence to suggest that would be the case. To read more on this story, click here. Politics Taoiseach Enda Kenny has landed himself in a Brexit row after telling EU leaders that Scotland shouldn't be "dragged out" of the European Union.
