Battleship Memorial Park is pleased to release an updated plan for Tuesday’s July 4th celebration. For those of you planning to come to Battleship Memorial Park to view the annual City of Mobile fireworks show, we will continue to host spectators in the park, but on a limited basis. Parking will be available in our paved parking lot and in the park’s interior roads. Due to heavy rainfall over the past week, the field has become too wet and will not support vehicle weight. Parking will open at 5:00 p.m. and will cost $5 per car. Viewing will shift from the edge of Mobile Bay to the west, to Mobile River. Bring you blanket, chairs, and picnic baskets. We will have concessions set up on the grounds for your convenience. No grills, alcohol, tents, or personal fireworks will be allowed in the park. Battleship Memorial Park will open at 8:00 a.m. on July 4th for regular business hours. The Park will close at 6:00 p.m. with the last ticket sold for the day at 5:00 p.m. The USS ALABAMA will be closed to the public for fireworks viewing. LifeSouth Community Blood Services will be holding a community blood drive at Battleship Memorial Park from 10 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Their blood mobile will be located adjacent to The Gift Shop. Our fundraising event, Fireworks on the Fantail, will continue as scheduled. We look forward to seeing everyone back at Battleship Memorial Park for next year’s City of Mobile July 4th celebration. Photo by: Daniel Fiore/SEARCH, Inc. via AP MOBILE, Alabama — Dives into murky water, painstaking examinations of relics and technical data and rigorous peer review led historians and archaeologists to confirm last week that wreckage found in the Mobile River in 2018 was indeed the Clotilda, the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. An event heralding the discovery on May 30 in the Mobile community of Africatown made clear that much work remains. The Alabama Historical Commission and others working on the project must decide how much can be salvaged, whether it can be brought ashore or if it should be left in place and protected. Perhaps more important: How can the interest and publicity engendered by the discovery of the Clotilda be harnessed to foster economic and racial justice in the community? Anderson Flen, a descendant of one of the Clotilda's enslaved, believes the historic find can spark new discussions on those topics. Coastal Policy Center/ Mobile Bay National Estuary Program The Coastal Policy Center continues to be viable and integral part of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Sea Lab’s support and service to the resource management agencies, Alabama’s Marine Research and Education Institution governments and the citizens of coastal Alabama. Efforts in the reporting year include: • Development of the Coastal Waterways Task Force to examine “carrying capacity” of waterways and waterfronts. • Hosting meetings among coastal planners from Alabama and Mississippi to discuss issues such as rapid growth affecting both coastal areas. • Smart Growth Initiatives, including participation in the tremendously successful “Smart Growth“Conference” in March. Over 300 attended this entire day conference in Mobile. Former Crewmen Returning to USS ALABAMA for Annual Reunion Mobile, Alabama, March 18, 2016 – The men who served aboard the USS ALABAMA (BB 60) will return to Battleship Memorial Park for their annual reunion on Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16. This will mark the 51st year that the crewmen have assembled for the USS ALABAMA Crewmen’s Association Reunion. “April is the most special time at USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park,” commented Janet Cobb, executive director. “It’s a homecoming for the crew, a privilege only a few World War II sailors enjoy, that of reuniting with their ship. I can’t imagine how these men feel when they pull into the Park and see her at anchor, at rest, ‘The Mighty A,’ ‘The Lucky A.’ Whatever they might have called her back then, they’re still coming home every time they visit her,” Cobb continued. “We look forward to another special few days together with these members of the Greatest Generation and look forward to welcoming them aboard.” This year 12 former crewmen will be attending the reunion, along with wives, children, grandchildren and other family members. “This is such a special time for these families,” explained Bill Tunnell, organizer of the annual reunion and member of the USS ALABAMA Battleship Commission. “The reunion is the time that these brave men share stories of the war and their lives with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passing their personal history down through the generations.” As part of the Crewmen’s Association reunion, the Crewmen’s Luncheon, an invitation only event, will be held at the Park.
