To all of our partners, your ongoing support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to working with you again in 2020 and beyond.

We are privileged to have the support of the most active coterie group amongst all SANFL clubs. To Matthew Matschoss and his Committee, and all Westonians Members thank you for your support through 2019. The projects both small and large funded or supported by the Westonians are a valued component of the club and Westonian members should know that your contribution is hugely valuable for your beloved club. I would like thank all Directors who have served on the Board during the past 12 months. As volunteers of the club your time and input is extremely valuable. On a personal level, it is a privilege to work with the current group of directors in pursuit of better things for the West Adelaide Football Club.

Finally, to a small group of staff and a large group of volunteers that dedicate so much to their roles, thank you. Without you the club could not hope to compete in SANFL, SANFLW or underage competitions. From those who dedicate a few hours, to those that dedicate hundreds across the year I thank you all for the time you spend and your support of this wonderful club.

Looking forward to bigger and better things for Westies in 2020 and beyond.

25 WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Our 2019 SANFL Women’s team had a very promising year, finishing 5th on the ladder with six wins and four losses, only missing a finals berth due to percentage. While missing the finals was disappointing, it shouldn’t detract from the gains made on the back of hard work put in by both coaches and players throughout the season. We retained the majority of our playing list and had eight of our junior players join our SANFLW team and certainly took on the challenge.

The team welcomed a new Head Coach, Shane Moon, with assistance from Daniel Caire and Janet Bradley. Shane Moon was excellent in his new role and continually showed his dedication and belief in the team throughout the season. It was also clear to see his knowledge and experience was going to reflect on the team’s growth, which was a key focus in building from the previous season. It is a credit to Shane for his hard work and commitment to the team in 2019 and we thank him for his efforts. We would particularly like to thank our support staff who did an exceptional job as team managers, trainers and property stewards.

In September 2019, the group started their pre-season conditioning and craft work early and it was apparent during the matches that their fitness and skills had improved immensely. The pre-season camp was a positive weekend away in Victor Harbor where the players were able to bond together and establish a culture that would lead to success. There were many positives to be taken away from the 2019 Season and we look forward to welcoming a new coach coming on board for the 2020 season. Our best and fairest was awarded to an outstanding player, Abbie Ballard, who continually puts in the hard work at training and her hometown in the Mallee. Madison Newman took out second place in the best and fairest and Rebecca Owen finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to Chelsea Biddell and Madison Newman for being drafted to the Adelaide Crows for the AFLW 2020 Season. We wish Chelsea and Madison the best of luck as they embark on this exciting new journey.

The Junior Female Program has continued to grow over the past few years and once again the U15 and U17 State-wide Super Shield showcased many of our upcoming talented players. The trials held in the July School holidays saw 75 players attend in the hope of gaining a position in either team. This was the highest attendance rate over the existence of the competition, therefore making it very difficult for our coaches to select two squads of 30. Our U15’s side was coached by Janet Bradley and assisted by Jacalyn Pickering, and the U17 side was coached by Brett Baldey and assisted by Daniel Scott and Mary Smith. The U15’s side had another great season showing potential in all three matches. The U17’s team had an outstanding season winning 3 out of 4 matches played. They were particularly impressive in round 2 with a strong win against Woodville West Torrens. Zoe Venning was our highest goal scorer and Lauren Young made it into the best players weekly. It is exciting to see the talent emerging in both U15 and U17 sides, and we look forward to having a number of players train on with our SANFLW side.

It is then the role of the Committee to facilitate that in the best way possible.

It has been a pleasure being involved with the Westonians Committee during 2019. Firstly, and possibly most importantly we have contributed $80,000 toward the West Adelaide Football Club in income generation, direct cash donation and payment for projects throughout the year. A magnificent achievement in a tough year on and off the field.

That coupled with a truly enjoyable atmosphere at our match day functions and all of our events held throughout the year, has meant that the Westonians have continued to be a vital part of West Adelaide Football Club.

I wish to thank two retiring board members for their incredible work.

Fay Barton has done a tremendous amount of work to contribute to the Westonians both in the seven years she sat on the committee and the eight or so years prior to that where she was instrumental in organising the major raffle. Fay will be sadly missed from our committee.

The second, Kerry Carn, has been a fixture at the Westonian committee for most of its existence. Kerry has been the keeper of the truth as Secretary for 24 years. He quietly goes about making sure everything is organised and under control. No one can imagine a committee without him. We look forward

The History Group has continued to catalogue the club’s memorabilia and recent donations which now number well over 1200 items.

This year the Group conducted its first ever “Show and Tell” on Sunday 14 July 2019, where the majority of rare and valuable items usually stored in the “Mark Beswick History Room” were displayed in the Sturt Pea Room for the day. Over 100 people visited and many people were amazed at the collection. Some people attending donated or loaned memorabilia to the club. Some good funds were also raised through the sale of some surplus items.

Gerry McGinlay from “At the Toss of a Coin” attended and has also assisted in the valuation of memorabilia.

The History Group are still seeking WAFC Annual Reports for 1922, 1923, 1926, 1931 and 1932 as we do not have a copy. Can you assist?

31 FINANCE REPORT

Clearly this has been a challenging year for all members of the I would like to thank Ben, Gayle, and Heath Pocock for their Board as changes were only made in February 2019. During assistance over the past year which has challenged us all at the reporting period, there have been many changes in both times. I would also thank my fellow Board members and the staff and operations, we believe we are now heading in the executive of SANFL for their support of the Club in 2019. right direction but there remains much work to be done. This Very special thanks to our sponsors for their continued loyalty, strategy may not be reflective in the financial performance of the Wolfpack members for their valuable support, our suppliers the Clubs at this stage, but it is important in a rebuilding phase, and trading partners, our players, coaches and volunteers, our we establish strong foundations from which to grow. office and bar staff, members, and supporters because without you, we have no Club. Despite these comments, I am still disappointed with the financial results presented for FY19 but feel confident that the initiatives now in place will position the Club towards off-field MARK GODDARD success. Collectively between the Football Club and Footballers Club, we made a very modest profit of $118,004 which included FINANCE DIRECTOR the SANFL distribution to all Clubs from its land divestment funds. That receipt was again used to retire debt owing to the Wolfpack. We expect the balance of monies owing to the members of this valuable investor group will be repaid early in 2020. There are several other restructuring measures to effect in 2020 but one of the key initiatives of the Board is to reduce both debt and operating expenses.

Over the course of the year, the Finance & Audit committee took a critical view of the Club’s financial position and adopted a conservative approach regarding the Club’s assets & liabilities. As a result, there have been several abnormal trading events relating to write-offs of bad debts, write-off of old stock, unforeseen cleaning costs and re-stocking in the kitchen and unbudgeted commitments which affected the results by approximately $60,000. We are not anticipating a repeat performance in FY20 as we have implemented changes in processes and procedures. In addition, we are now better utilising the H&L software to monitor bar & bistro trading, conducting a monthly review of gaming data and have implemented a rostering system to schedule casual employees and manage costs.

The Board acknowledges the Club will continue to face financial pressures in 2020 as the changes and all controls measures are fully established. Clearly, the Board and management has recognised you cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.

With the continued support of the members and supporters, we are confident the Club remains viable, but it is vitally important we generate a solid cash flow. We need everyone to continue to support our sponsors, fill the venue, enjoy a drink, have a meal and support the team during the season. As you would be aware, Gavin is now engaged full time as our League coach and we have a full in season 2020. These are additional costs beyond FY19 that need to be met and I particularly urge our supporters to buy memberships, attend our home games and special events throughout the year ahead and enjoy the hospitality on offer. Our budget for FY20 demonstrates our capacity to be operationally profitable and forecasts improvement in our cash flow.
