He attended Eton and studied for four years in Frankfurt-am-Main under Ivan Knorr, a Russian teacher of composition. Quilter was known for composing over one hundred songs, although he also wrote an opera, Julia, and a couple ballets. Although his songs are considered to make no great technical demands on the performers, nor intellectual demands on the listener, a Quilter song is easily recognized by the natural flow of his vocal lines. The rhythm of the words is enhanced by the melody, rather than forcing the rhythm into a preconceived melody.
