  • Diocese in Europe Prayer Diary, July to December 2011
DIOCESE IN EUROPE PRAYER DIARY, JULY TO DECEMBER 2011 This calendar has been compiled to help us to pray together for one another and for our common concerns. Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery. We also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, www.aco.org), the World Council of Churches prayer cycle (weekly, www.oikoumene.org, prayer resources on site), the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, www.porvoochurches.org), and festivals and commemorations from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx). Sundays and Festivals, printed in bold type, have special readings in the Common Worship Lectionary. Lesser Festivals, printed in normal type, have collects in the Common Worship Lectionary. Commemorations, printed in italics, may have collects in Exciting Holiness, and additional, non- biblical, readings for all of these may be found in Celebrating the Saints (both SCM-Canterbury Press).

  • HADLEIGH DEANERY and ITS COURT. There Were in the County
16 HADLEIGH DEANERY AND ITS COURT. There were in the County of Suffolka few parishes which lay without the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Norwich, and wereconsequently known as " Pectliars." These parishes were Hadleigh, Monks' Eleigh, and Moulton, which were in the jurisdiction of the Arch- bishop of Canterbury, and Freckenham in the juris- diction of the Bishop of Rochester. In the last volume of the Proceedings of our Institute (p. 325) it was shewn that the South Elmham parishes con- stituted a Deanery because they formed a part of the temporalities of the Bishop of Norwich ; so, likewise, as the three parishes of Hadleigh, Monks' Eleigh and Moulton :weremanors belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury they possessed a Court, and the official of the Manors was the Commissary for the Deanery to which these said parishes belonged. This Deanery was known as the Deanery of Bocking, a town now considered as part of Braintree, in Essex. Six parishes in the county of Essex comprised the remaining part of the Deanery, which did not acknowledge the in- hibition of either the Bishop of Norwich or the Bishop of London. It was nearly a century previous to the Constitu- tion.of Ecclesiastical Courts by William I. that Brith- noth, the Earl who fell at the battle of Maldon, 991, gave the manors of Hadleigh and Illeigh to the Prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, and the Convent of the same place to be held in free, pure, and perpetual alms. When the Ecclesiastical Court of the Deanery was established it is probable that the Rector of Bock- ing was appointed presiding judge.

  • A Pastoral Address to the People of God of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe
A Pastoral Address to the People of God of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe The Rt. Rev. Pierre W. Whalon, D.D. Bishop in charge and Suffragan to the Presiding Bishop October 17, 2013 Dear People of God in the Convocation of Churches in Europe, The canon law of The Episcopal Church requires bishops to make an annual Address to their conventions and synods. Five years ago, I decided not to read this Address to the convention, but rather issue an official Pastoral Letter in the form of an Address, to be made available in all our congregations after Convention. As this continues to be a hit with the delegates, at least, I am repeating for the sixth year this way of addressing the delegates, by addressing all of you in Europe. I would very much welcome your comments. Please write me care of the Convocation, 23 avenue George V, 75008 Paris France, or else email at [email protected]. I will reply — I promise. Canon law requires that I inform you of my “episcopal acts” — what I have been doing in my role as your Bishop — since our last convention. I made 21 visitations, confirming and receiving 58, presiding at 13 baptisms; and ordaining the Rev. Elizabeth Ewing to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood at St. Andrew’s, College Park, Maryland, on December 8. I ordained Fanny Belanger and Christopher Easthill to the Sacred Order of Deacons on March 17 at the Virginia Seminary Chapel, as they move toward the priesthood. (Christopher is with us at Convention.) On June 30, I assisted at the ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons of Bruce Rienstra, by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, in Southwell Cathedral.
