Dear Alumni and Friends,

I have the pleasure of presenting the 2014-2015 Manhattanville Honor Roll, which highlights the contributions to the College from its alumni, parents, Trustees, faculty, staff, friends, foundations and corporations, and current students. We share the wonderful news that, once again, the Annual Fund grew last year, enabling us to provide more support for our students in areas from scholarship assistance to library funding, faculty development, and community service programs.

In addition, the College was fortunate to receive nearly $1 million in planned gifts — bequests from alumni and friends of Manhattanville who left a legacy from which generations of students will benefit. The majority of these bequests were gifts to the Endowment for the provision of scholarship support, and through this thoughtful generosity, the funds will continue to grow and provide income to the school in perpetuity. We hope that many of our alumni and friends will consider the possibility of such gifts to Manhattanville, as Jean and I are doing for scholarship provision.

This Honor Roll once again recognizes all members of the Sheila M. Smythe Society, the College’s most dedicated donors who have given consecutively for two or more years. We continue to encourage membership in this society, which also ensures a reliable flow of support for Manhattanville. It is heartening to know that over half of the Smythe Society members are lifetime donors, those who have given to the College for 10+ years.

As is our tradition in the Honor Roll, we spotlight a number of our students who receive assistance through scholarship endowments. You surely will be impressed by the quality and commitment of these fine students and see the difference such financial support can make in the lives of young people. In addition, there are short features on our most recent Reunion, Manhattanville’s exciting new Castle Conversations lecture series, and some of the campus projects which have so enhanced the physical beauty and quality of life on campus.

As we enter our final year at this special college, Jean and I are so thrilled to witness the vibrancy of life at Manhattanville. At the core are these foundational imperatives. First and foremost is Manhattanville’s commitment to education and learning as a lifelong habit. The faculty has been laser focused on “linking the liberal arts to life,” with the development of new majors and programs in the applied liberal arts. There are 45 majors and minors, with a large selection of interdisciplinary programs, such as the International Studies program, a globally-focused, mission-centered course of study of great appeal to many of our students. Secondly, our college is committed to realizing education’s transformative effects through meaningful action and a willingness to serve and lead, ethically and responsibly. Manhattanville’s tradition of service pervades every area of student life, through the activities of our Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice and the Connie Hogarth Center for Social Action. We are very proud to say that our students provide close to 30,000 hours of service each year through a myriad of local, national, and on-campus programs. Finally, we are committed to preparing our students in a rigorous academic environment for a world that is global, diverse, and intercultural.

Your invaluable support, as highlighted in this Honor Roll, is the key to our success today — and tomorrow. We thank you and encourage your continued involvement. Senior Class President Andrea Collazo Borrali presented the Class Gift of $2,400, contributed by more than 100 members of the Class of 2015, to help renovate the residence halls. Carmen Fariña delivered the Graduate Commencement speech on Thursday, May 16. The daughter of Spanish immigrants and the first in her family to graduate from college, Carmen came out of retirement to become the current Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, over- seeing the largest school district in the U.S. comprised of 1,800 schools and 1.1 million students. As she looked out at faces in the crowd, she explained that she does not typically deliver commencement exercises; however she ac- cepted the invitation from Manhattanville President Jon Strauss for two rea- sons. As the product of parochial school and an all-girls high school, she was fortunate, she reflected, to have spent her formative years in a culture that values service and an ethical approach to life – values she knows Manhattan- ville holds sacred. Carmen then spoke of her colleague and friend, alumna Kathleen Grimm ’67, recipient of an honorary degree from Manhattanville in 2010, who passed away earlier this year. Kathleen was one of her Depu- ty Chancellors – a woman with grit, courage, and “one of the most ethical people [she has] ever known.” A dedicated public servant for three decades, Kathleen always put New Yorkers first, Carmen said, and it showed in the small and large things she did every day. Carmen credits much of Kathleen’s altruism and ethics to her Manhattanville education, and asked students how they, too, would change the world for better. She counseled listeners to keep in mind three things: Live a life of service. Don’t rush to be where you think

Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Legacy Society The Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Society honors alumni and friends who have created a living legacy by designating Manhattanville College as the beneficiary of a bequest, trust, charitable gift annuity, life insurance policy or retirement plan, or who have made other estate provisions for the College. The Society is named for the College’s fifth President, who served from 1945 to 1965. Mother O’Byrne’s lasting legacy is our beautiful campus, as she was the driving force behind the purchase of the estate on which Manhattanville College now stands.

Sheila M. Smythe Society Sheila M. Smythe ’52 was one of Manhattanville’s most dedicated and beloved alumni and volunteer leaders. For more than 20 years, Ms. Smythe sat on the Board of Trustees and twice served as board chair. Before her passing in 2003, Ms. Smythe made consecutive annual gifts to Manhattanville for over 35 years. In honor of her loyal support the Sheila M. Reunion 2015 Recap

Reunion 2015 took place on campus the weekend of June 5-7. All alumni were invited to enjoy a packed schedule of exciting events, with special celebrations for the classes of 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2014. President Jon Strauss and Jean Strauss welcomed the 500 alumni, family, and friends who attended the festivities. 1 2 Reunion began with campus tours and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the School of Education. Alumni enjoyed each other’s company over cocktails and at the Taste of Manhattanville dinner at Reid Castle. A special dinner was held for the Class of 1965, celebrating their 50th Reunion. Friday night concluded with Comedy Night in the Pub, a Young Alumni pub crawl in White Plains, Cordials in the Castle, and a wonderful presentation by Rose Marie Olivia Guzzo ’60 on the music and history of Richard Rodgers. 3

Saturday’s events featured students, faculty, and alumni with a variety of educational sessions. President Strauss and Jean Strauss presented a State of the College address focusing on a range of exciting initiatives at Manhattanville. During Manhattanville 101, guests went back to the classrooms to discuss Pope Francis, the Manhattanville experience today (led by a panel of students), and the Sound of Music, among other topics. 4 The Reunion Luncheon celebrated the accomplishments of the 2015 Alumni Association Award recipients. Congratulations to Amanda Minck ’10 (Recent Graduate Service Award), Anna Mae Walsh Burke ’60 (Distinguished Alumni Award, posthumous) and Joan Magnetti RSCJ, ’65 (Outstanding Alumni Service Award). Guests also dined at the Quad Jam BBQ outside.

Saturday afternoon continued with numerous 5 opportunities for alumni to connect and reminisce either at the Athletics Reception or with one of Manhattanville’s most beloved professors, Lawson Bowling, at the Beer Garden. Archivist Lauren Ziarko once again gave alumni the chance to “go back in time” at the Archives Open House, an exhibition of Manhattanville’s historical treasures. Other events included a campus scavenger hunt, the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Manhattanville Advancement Program (MAP), and another current student panel. In addition, the Loyal Valiants Reception recognized the College’s most loyal donors and volunteers, and a faculty reception was held in memory of longtime Manhattanville professor, Kwan Ha Yim.

Reunion 2015 Recap

Saturday evening began with cocktails outside the Castle. Following their class dinners, all alumni were welcomed to come back together for Dancing Under the Stars with live music performed by alumnus Rich Harris ’05 and his band, Hi Def. 8 9 Sunday morning featured several Reunion traditions. Alumni enjoyed tea and conversation with former president of the College and current Trustee Elizabeth McCormack ’44. A Catholic Mass was then held in the O’Byrne Chapel with music provided by a talented choir group from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich. Following Mass, the Class of 1965 honored classmates who have passed away at the 1965 Memorial Tree Planting ceremony. Reunion closed on Sunday afternoon with 10 a luncheon where attendees could look back at their weekend and begin planning their next trips to campus!

Thank you to all who joined us for Reunion 2015. We hope you had the chance to relive some of your favorite Manhattanville memories, as well as create new ones to last a lifetime.
