1911 CENSUS CHARDSTOCK AND ALL SAINTS

The census was taken on the night of Sunday April 2nd 1911.
This transcription was made by members of CHRG from images of the original documents. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted:
The 1911 census was the first to be completed by the head of the household, rather than the Enumerator. Consequently there was a greater lack of consistency with some people being recorded with their Christian name by which they were known, rather than the name by which they were baptised. The Occupational Status of each person (if applicable) had to be shown as Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). There was clearly considerable confusion about when and how this notation was to be used with many cases of information either being incorrect or missing. Also there was a general lack of understanding regarding the term “working at Home (H) “.
The postal address had to be recorded for each dwelling and this created further confusion. Dwellings at the southern end of the South Tithing were geographically located in the Civil Parish of Chardstock, the Ecclesiastical Parish of All Saints and the postal town of Axminster. It is not surprising that this led to many errors, mainly affecting where people were recorded as having been born. In addition to using word search programmes, researchers are advised to scan through each census visually checking names etc. of interest to them.
The information required of married women was sometimes completed by widows, and occasionally by widowers. This was crossed out by the Enumerator, but has been included in this transcript, as it is information useful to researchers. The Nationality of each person had to be recorded. Every person entered on the Chardstock census was “British subject by parentage”.
To save space and achieve consistency, the place of birth is given first, followed by the county. The “Chapman County Code” system is used to identify the counties of Devon DEV, Dorset DOR and Somerset SOM. Other counties are recorded in full. County boundary changes introduced in 1896 transferred Chardstock from Dorset to Devon and Wambrook from Dorset to Somerset.

An analysis of the recordings for Chardstock is tabled below. The Boarding School/College (1861 to 1881) and the Industrial school (1861 only) have been excluded from the figures. Also a formerly detached part of the Parish of Chardstock at Crawley had been transferred to Membury by 1901.
