COMPETITION RULES

1: Age: Competitor’s age shall be reckoned as at 16th July 2016. 2: Eligibility: The competition is open only to bona fide amateurs. Amateur is anyone under the age of 19 whose income is not mainly derived from the exercise of his or her talents in the particular section in which she or he is competing. Any person who has been taught or coached by the adjudicator at any time in the year preceding this festival shall not be eligible to compete. 3: Adjudicator: No competitor, teacher, parent or any other interested party other than committee members, shall have any communication with the adjudicator prior to or during the festival. 4: Order of performance: Competitors must perform in the order as shown in programme. The stage manager may vary the order in exceptional circumstances. 5: Protests: These must be entered in writing within one hour of the adjudicator’s award and be accompanied by a deposit of $20.00 as evidence of good faith. Deposit will be returned if protest upheld. The decision of the committee will be final. 6: Rehearsals: If time permits, times will be allocated for Variation and Group Dances only. 7: Theatre Rules: No glass, naked flame, liquid or powder or any substance that may affect the surface of the stage or be to the detriment of other competitors, is allowed on stage. Smoking is not allowed in the theatre, backstage or in dressing rooms. 8: Conduct: Any parent or teacher in charge of any competitor/s shall be responsible for their good conduct and personal safety throughout the festival. 9: Videos: The services of Copy Catz Video Ltd - professional videographer - will be available. Personal videotaping is not permitted this year sorry. Details for ordering will be in the programme. 10: Music: There will ONLY be a CD player and all CD’s must be marked clearly. There will not be a facility to play tapes. Please check your CDs are ‘finished’. 11: Group Ages: See criteria for eligibility in Syllabus notes. 12: Group Music: One sound track per CD for EACH group item please 13: Group Cancellations: To ensure the smooth running of the Groups night, please notify [email protected] no later than Friday 1 July if your group will not be performing. 14: Time limits: Group items – 6 minutes Under 13 years – 3 minutes 13 years & over – 4 minutes 15: Championship Classes: The committee reserves the right to cancel Championship classes if there are insufficient entries. See criteria for eligibility in Syllabus notes. 16: Cups and trophies: All cups and trophies must be returned to Dance Kapiti by 1 June unless other arrangements have been made. 17: Certificates: 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in Championship classes and classes 11 years and under only will get a certificate with their report sheet. 18: PACANZ Nomination: See criteria in Syllabus notes. 19: Risk: Competitors will compete at their own risk.

CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Class 47: Junior Ballet Championship Competitors are eligible if they have danced in the classical class in their age group and 2 of the following classes in their age group; barefoot, demi-character and character. Class 47 will be a repeat performance of their classical dance. 1st Place $50.00 2nd Place $30.00 3rd Place $20.00

Class 48: Intermediate Ballet Championship Competitors are eligible if they have danced in the classical class in their age group and 2 of the following classes in their age group; barefoot, demi-character and character. Class 48 will be a repeat performance of their classical dance or classical pointe dance. 1st Place $75.00 2nd Place $50.00 3rd Place $30.00

Class 49: Senior Ballet Championship Competitors are eligible if they have danced in the classical or pointe class in their age group and 2 of the following classes in their age group; barefoot, demi-character, character, neo-classical, and lyrical. 2015 Senior Ballet Championship winner and Class 27 entrants are not eligible to compete in this class. Class 49 will consist of: (a) Set variation – in leotard (females), in tights (males)

Class 50: Junior Modern Championship Competitors must dance in the jazz class and impromptu class for their age group and will be required to repeat the jazz class dance for class 50. 1st Place $50.00 2nd Place $30.00 3rd Place $20.00

Class 51: Senior Modern Championship Competitors must dance in the jazz class, contemporary class and impromptu class for their age group. Class 51 may repeat either Jazz or Contemporary that was performed in class age group section. 1st Place $150.00 2nd Place $100.00 3rd Place $50.00

Groups – Classes 43, 44, 45, 46, 60, 61, 63, 64 - Average age taken Groups should be entered according to the average age taken. No dancer may dance in more than three groups in any one section. Dancers may perform in more than one section.

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS 2016 CRITERIA FOR BALLET

A. Performers shall be 15 and under 19 years as at 1st of October 2016 B. Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary round;

2. Solo Variation from any recognised classical repertoire which MAY or MAY not be from the list in B1. The selection, however, must show a clear contrast in style to the variation selected in section B.1. 3. All performers will participate in a Technical Class conducted by or for the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be permitted. The Technical Class will be taken into consideration in determining both the semi-final and the final placing.

C. There will be a semi-final of up to twelve performers who will repeat either B. 1 or B. 2 at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the Preliminary round(s). D. For the Final Award Concert six performers will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

Class 52: National Young Performer of the Year Dance Kapiti Nomination

Dance Kapiti, may nominate up to two competitors, which shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A, B1 and B2.

The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include;  A demonstration of adequate preparation  An authority of performance  A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.

$75.00 will be paid for each nominee by Dance Kapiti and the nominee will pay $175.00 towards the nomination fee. A subsidy will be given to help with travel costs - $100.00 to winner, $50.00 to second nominee. There is no direct entry.

2016 CRITERIA FOR TROUPES/GROUPS

A. Competitors may be of any age. Competitors may only compete in ONE nominated Troupe/Group.

B. Each Troupe/Group shall be nominated at a Member Society Competition by performing in any dance genre pertinent to the Competition they enter. This competition is for amateur troupes/groups only and is not open to professionals*. No singing allowed.

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of five minutes, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D. Troupes/Groups who gain nomination must be able to attend the National Young Performer Competition which will be held in . Compulsory Registration/Orientation will be on the evening of Thursday 13 and the Competition will be on Friday 14 October 2016.

E. The winning Troupe/Group will be announced at the completion of Competition on the Friday and it would be appreciated if the group were available to perform at the Final Award Concert on Sunday night 16 October 2016.

F. Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of both the competitors and suitable for a family audience.

NB. Troupe/Group members names and age, as well as the Entry Fee, will need to submitted on the Official Entry form, no later than 6 September 2016. Nominees in the Troupe/Group section are required to include performance copies of their music on CD when submitting their entry form, and a list of the titles and composer and/or artists for each piece.

The winning Troupe/Group will receive a Trophy and $1,000 for their Studio.

National Young Performer Group of the Year Dance Kapiti Nomination

Dance Kapiti may nominate one troupe, in any group genre, in any age group, which shall be selected by the adjudicator, in accordance with the Rules outlined for PACANZ Nomination as above. If there are 30 or MORE Troupe/Group entries for Nomination, Dance Kapiti may offer a second Nomination.

The adjudicator will determine that a troupe has displayed a sufficient standard of performance. If the adjudicator considers that standard has NOT been reached, then NO nomination will be made. A sufficient standard of performance is required to competently represent Kapiti Ballet Society at the National Finals.

The nominated Troupe/Group is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl gst.

A separate class will not be held for this nomination. There is no additional fee for entering PACANZ Group Nomination, apart from the $12.00 per Group class entry and other applicable fees. Groups MUST enter the name of the troupe in their appropriate Class outlined below, on the Dance Kapiti entry form, at the time of entry to be eligible to be judged for PACANZ nomination. No late entries will be accepted. Classes being:
