Throughout our history, the Greek community has played an integral part in the ISU experience. For generations, Cyclones have identified the Greek experience as one of their favorite memories of Iowa State. Today, Greek life is no different. We now represent more than 4,650 students and more than 60 different Greek organizations. This past year has marked many milestones in our community. We have reached over 15% of the student body and have welcomed new organizations to campus: Chi Phi Fraternity and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. Interest in our community continues to grow as we will welcome Delta Gamma Fraternity and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity to campus this fall and Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity will join our community in 2017. The Greek community continues to play an integral role in retention. Members of the Greek community who enrolled at Iowa State in 2011 have a four-year 52.4% graduation rate. The university average is 44.7%. Our 1-year retention rate is 92.2% compared to the university average of 87.4% (based on students who enrolled in 2014). The experiences our students are having in the Greek community are clearly making a difference. Our councils have actively worked to represent their interest of their members this past year. The Collegiate Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council received the Sutherland and Jellison Awards respectively, honoring their councils as the best of their size in the country. The Multicultural Greek Council worked diligently this year to create Mosaic: a recognition event for chapters to thank outstanding members of the community who show a commitment to diversity. The National Pan- Hellenic Council restored GreekFest to a Homecoming tradition. The community received the Pinnacle Award for the best strategic growth plan in the country from the Association and Fraternal Leadership and Values. At the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisers, the community was honored with an Excellence in Educational Programming Award for our work with SAFE (Students Advocating for Everyone) Liaisons. Risk prevention is an area that we could continue to improve. In 2015-2016, there were six organizations found responsible for violations of the student conduct code. As a community we can continue to work together to hold each other accountable and reduce these numbers. I have been impressed by the amount of collaboration within the Greek community. While we still have much room for improvement, we have seen chapters partner with university departments, other clubs and organizations, and across councils. As we are all concerned about the amount of programming in the community, I would encourage chapters to partner together. A great example this past year was Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Chi Omega Fraternity, and Sigma Pi Fraternity worked together to develop a program on race and ethnicity for their members. This is a great resource to learn from each other and really benefit from building relationships with each other. The success of our Greek community relies on great students and phenomenal advisers. The work to be the very best community relies on our ability to continue to push forward. Thank you for your commitment to Iowa State, and I would challenge us all to be innovative and creative as we continue to move in our journey of excellence. Go Cyclones!
