In Mansfield Park, Sir Thomas Bertram has his sons learn elocution by reciting “To be or not to be” and the funeral orations from Julius Caesar; in Northanger Abbey, Catherine Morland trains to be a heroine by memorizing stock quotations from Othello and Twelfth Night; and the heroine of Emma asserts her romantic sophistication by imagining “a Hartfield edition of Shakespeare” that would gloss “The course of true love never did run smooth” in line with the matrimonial straightaway she purports to detect in a suitor’s correspondence (p.
