They all have a disease called diabetes. Diabetes (die-uh-BEE-teez) keeps the body's tissues from absorbing glucose, or sugar, from the bloodstream. The body uses glucose as a source of energy, and much of the body’s glucose comes from food. When food is digested, glucose goes into the bloodstream to be absorbed by the body’s tissues. For diabetic people, the glucose stays in the blood, causing high blood sugar levels. Some symptoms of high blood sugar levels include fatigue, hunger, a lot of thirst, and blurry vision. According to the American Diabetes Association, about two million Americans learn that they have diabetes each year. Jessica Pray became one of those people at age 13. She wanted to help people with diabetes. There are several treatment options and lifestyle adjustments for people with diabetes. How did Jessica learn to cope with having diabetes? Here is the story in her own words. I was told I had diabetes when I was 13. It all began when I got the flu. It went on for weeks. I was still thirsty all of the time. I felt really tired. The symptoms were odd. My mom and I thought about going to the doctor, but then we'd put it off. We thought that I had some kind of virus, but I kept getting worse. We finally went to the doctor. I was told I had diabetes right before Halloween. I'll never forget it. I was told I would have to inject myself twice a day with a chemical called insulin. Learning to Cope My doctor showed me how to inject the insulin. I also had to learn a lot about nutrition because of my disease. There were lots of foods I could no longer eat. I was really unhappy. I knew the diabetes was going to be there forever. I learned to test my blood to see how much insulin I needed. I had to prick my finger with a needle and squeeze a drop of blood onto a strip of paper. Then I'd put the paper into a machine to get a reading. Soon, I got the hang of knowing how much insulin I needed. I had a lot of trouble adjusting to my diabetes the first year. I had to wake up by 9 o'clock every morning to inject myself. Slowly, my internal clock began to wake me in time for my injection. I didn't like this routine. But it was something I had to do. Living with Disease Page 4 of 34 © 2016 ReadWorks®, Inc. 'It's Just Part of Who I Am': A Teen Learns to Live With Chronic Illness After I learned I had diabetes, I talked to my class about it. No one was upset or anything. I didn't want them to think I was contagious and be afraid to be around me. Diabetes can be overwhelming. Sometimes, I break down and cry. Sometimes, I take my anger out on my family, but I don't mean to. If I start dwelling on my illness, I get upset and have a hard time. “I've Adapted” In some ways, diabetes has made me a more responsible person. It keeps me in line. It teaches me about life. If a cure for diabetes is found, that would be great. But in the meantime, I'm doing OK. It's just part of who I am. I've adapted. What would I say to other people with chronic illnesses? Yet Montagu has gone down in history as a healer. She helped slay the "speckled monster." Investigation Montagu was a British noble. At age 26, she caught smallpox, a disease known as the speckled monster. Smallpox started with a high fever, chills, pain, nausea, and vomiting. After a few days, the fever went away. A rash appeared on the face and inside the eyelids. Three in 10 smallpox sufferers died. Montagu’s brother was among them. Those who survived carried reminders of the disease. Some lost their eyesight. Montagu was among those scarred with pockmarks. In 1717, Montagu traveled to Constantinople (now called Istanbul). That was the capital of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire, to which her husband was an ambassador. There, she studied local culture. Sometimes they blew dried smallpox scabs up a person’s nose. Variolation had been performed for centuries. It was believed to have come from India and China. Montagu wondered: How did these practices work? Solution Montagu believed in the treatment enough to allow her son to be variolated. When she returned to England, Montagu publicized the method. During a smallpox outbreak in 1721, she had the treatment performed on her daughter in front of royal court doctors. Royal family members were convinced that variolation worked. The method then became fashionable in Europe. The practice was the basis for vaccinations. Dr. Edward Jenner performed the first vaccination in 1796. The injections, or shots, that patients get contain a mild form of the disease that the injections are meant to fight. She trusted a new found treatment enough to allow her children to be treated. Her caring and experience helped save many lives in England during her lifetime. Boy, was Grandma acting weird, he thought. Lately she kept calling him Patrick--that was his dad's name, not his. Why did she do that? It was as if she didn't know him at all. Tears welled up in his eyes. Yesterday he had told her several times that he wasn't Patrick. He had thought she was playing games with him. But she became angry and yelled at him after the fourth or fifth time that he insisted he was Conner. He cried yesterday too. M.W.: It’s created this whole movie (The Tic Code) that my wife wrote because I have Tourette, and that’s been pretty interesting for me. As a kid, I didn’t even know I had TS. I just thought it was my “habits.” There wasn’t a big diagnosis thirty years ago. (In that way) It was difficult for me. I’m lucky I have it very mildly, I just have some motor and vocal tics. It never really interfered with school work or concentration, anything functional. I was able to do well (in school) and I always had a lot of friends. It did make me self-conscious. Even though I’m very outgoing, I always had an inner feeling of self-consciousness. I spent a lot of energy, unconsciously as well as consciously, trying to hide it and pretend it was something else. I could never be cool and invulnerable but I told Jeffrey Kramer’s kids that Tourette guys get the chicks because they think you’re really vulnerable. You always do really well (with women). I didn’t get a real diagnosis, until a few years ago. I kind of figured out what I had in the mid-eighties. I was about thirty, a friend of mine who had two boys with Tourette Michael Wolff, Jazz Musician Teti Bloom said, “You have Tourette.” And I said, “No I don’t.” She gave me a book to read and I recognized myself.

The Portrayal of Tourette Syndrome in Film and Television Samantha Calder-Sprackman, Stephanie Sutherland, Asif Doja ABSTRACT: Objective: To determine the representation of Tourette Syndrome (TS) in fictional movies and television programs by investigating recurrent themes and depictions. Background: Television and film can be a source of information and misinformation about medical disorders. Tourette Syndrome has received attention in the popular media, but no studies have been done on the accuracy of the depiction of the disorder. Methods: International internet movie databases were searched using the terms “Tourette’s”, “Tourette’s Syndrome”, and “tics” to generate all movies, shorts, and television programs featuring a character or scene with TS or a person imitating TS. Using a grounded theory approach, we identified the types of characters, tics, and co-morbidities depicted as well as the overall representation of TS. Results: Thirty-seven television programs and films were reviewed dating from 1976 to 2010. Fictional movies and television shows gave overall misrepresentations of TS. Coprolalia was overrepresented as a tic manifestation, characters were depicted having autism spectrum disorder symptoms rather than TS, and physicians were portrayed as unsympathetic and only focusing on medical therapies. School and family relationships were frequently depicted as being negatively impacted by TS, leading to poor quality of life. Conclusions: Film and television are easily accessible resources for patients and the public that may influence their beliefs about TS. Physicians should be aware that TS is often inaccurately represented in television programs and film and acknowledge misrepresentations in order to counsel patients accordingly.

    In the summer of 2015, a grueling and often bewildering four-year battle with a rare cancer had the acclaimed pianist-composer Michael Wolff on the ropes. He’d fallen into a coma at a New York hospital, and the prognosis had moved from doubtful to defeated. His sons Nat and Alex, in the midst of their ascent as two of the most talented actors of their generation, had returned home to be with their father and try to comfort him. They played guitars and sang at his bedside, tapping into the sweet, winsome gifts that had made the Wolffs a famous musical family nearly a decade earlier, via the hit TV series The Naked Brothers Band. At one point, as Wolff was being cared for by his wife, the award-winning actress, director and writer Polly Draper, a doctor asked her if she’d signed a Do Not Resuscitate order. Through the haze of drugs and debilitating illness, Wolff interjected. Lifting his head up, he growled: “Resuscitate me!” “I guess it just wasn’t my time,” he recalls today, chuckling. Indeed, Wolff had plenty more life to live and music to make—including Swirl, his radiant new Sunnyside piano-trio album featuring bassist Ben Allison and drummer Allan Mednard. Aus dem Off heraus hört man die Unterhaltung von den beiden Hauptdarsteller des Films Miles, einem zwölfjährigen Jungen und Laura, der Mutter von Miles. Diese Sequenz endet mit dem Dank des Jungen an seine Mutter, dass sie ihn nicht Thelonious genannt hat. Danach sieht man Miles (am Klavier) und seine Mitschüler bei einer Konzertprobe mit dem Schulorchester zu Mozarts kleiner Nachtmusik. Am Ende bemerkt man das Talent des jungen Pianisten. Er improvisiert frei über das vorgegebene Thema. Gleiches geschieht im Jazzclub „Village Vanguard“, das Miles besuchen darf, wenn es noch nicht regulär geöffnet hat. Der Besitzer des Lokals gibt Miles die Möglichkeit, am Flügel des Clubs seinen geliebten Jazz zu üben, da er selbst kein Piano besitzt. Als der Junge mit seinem Freund Todd nach Hause zurückkehrt, trifft er dort seine alleinerziehende Mutter Laura, die in ihrer Wohnung als Schneiderin arbeitet, mit einer korpulenten Kundin an. Er macht eine beleidigende Äußerung über die Figur der Kundin. Als diese die Wohnung verlassen hat, streiten sich Miles und seine Mutter. Man erkennt, dass Miles im Laufe der Handlung immer stärker mit Zuckungen und nervösem Augenzwinkern reagiert. Zusätzlich wiederholt er immer wieder beleidigende Worte. Seine Mutter versucht ihn zu beruhigen. Der Junge ist beunruhigt darüber, ob er vielleicht in Zukunft ähnliche Probleme wie Thelonious Monk bekommt, der wahrscheinlich unter dem Asperger-Syndrom und Depressionen litt. Miles Mutter ist eine scheue, sanfte Frau, die ihren Sohn liebt.

The “Tourettic voice” that emerges in Ashley’s music challenges normative conceptions of unified subjectivity and the ontology of presence. From Oliver Sacks’ (1987; see also Sacks, 1992) essay on the drummer “Witty Ticcy Ray,” and the Tourettic boy pianist in the film The Tic Code (Draper & Winick, 1999), to Nirvana’s song “Tourette’s” (Cobain, 1993), responses to music and TS have been extremely varied and provocative. In this brief essay I examine one musical engagement with TS: American composer Robert Ashley’s piece “Automatic Writing” (1996). Lasting exactly 46 minutes, “Automatic Writing” is a work for two voices (Robert Ashley and Mimi Johnson), electronics and Polymoog1 (both performed by Ashley). The piece was produced, recorded, and edited at several locations (Oakland, Paris, and New York City); it is very sparse, and (at least in my hearing) hauntingly beautiful. Before analyzing “Automatic Music” I would like to present some of the guiding thoughts and inspirations for this article. As a musician and Touretter, I have long meditated upon the dialectical relationship between my musical activity and my tics. In my own experience, playing guitar has helped me to “forget” the insistent and intrusive gestures of my Tourettic Doppelgänger.
