The Magnificat, the Canticle of Mary

“My soul magnifies the LORD, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.” –Luke 1:46-55

Mary, the Blessed Virgin and our Mother, said these words to her cousin St. Elizabeth, in response to St. Elizabeth’s inspired (inspiro translated literally from Latin means “breathed into;” St. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit) question about why the mother of her Lord would come to her. Entire books could be, and have been, written about Mary’s response to her cousin (of course it can be hard to find them online; any search will hit the Magnificat monthly subscription service).

It is full of references to the Old Testament. As the Catholic Encyclopedia says, it is, “indicating the fulfillment of the olden prophecy and prophesying anew until the end of time, the Magnificat is the crown of the Old Testament singing, the last canticle of the Old and the first of the New Testament.” The Canticle is one of praise, of thanksgiving, and of great joy at the wonders the Lord worked in the past and will work in the future. It is praise for what the Lord has done for the World, for Israel, and for Mary, making her the Mother of the Lord. Pope Benedict XVI recognized in the hymn two distinct movements. In the opening verses (46-50) the first person singular is used many times, where the Blessed Virgin is effusively thanking and praising the wonders God has worked in her life. But in the later verses (51-55) God does seven mighty works, where Our Lady speaks of how, “He has shown strength with His arm… He has scattered the proud, etc.” In all of these works, a broad sweep of salvation history given by the Holy Mother, God works at the side of the least and against the mighty. Sometimes, living in time, able to only see a tiny sliver of God’s work in its entirety, this can be hard to see, but as Pope Benedict says, “Often, his plan is hidden under the opaque terrain of human vicissitudes, in which the "proud," the "mighty" and the "rich" triumph. However, in the end, his secret strength is destined to manifest who God's real favorites are: the "faithful" to his Word, "the humble," "the hungry," "his servant Israel," namely, the community of the People of God that, as Mary, is constituted by those who are "poor," pure and simple of heart. It is that "little flock" which Jesus invites not to be afraid, as the Father has willed to give it his kingdom.” True followers of Jesus, the faithful, will be like Mary, faithful to Him until the end, not shattered upon the rocks in the stormy sea that is the world we live in, but sticking faithfully to the Church, the Ark, through which Christ will bring us to life everlasting with Him. (If you’re reading this in St. Patrick’s Cathedral look up. The church ceiling intentionally looks like the inside hull of a ship, bearing us toward eternity).

There are many pious traditions about the Magnificat and the Gospel surrounding it. It was often called in ancient antiphonaries, the “Gospel of Mary.” There is also a tradition and a hypothesis brought forward by pious and orthodox theologians that Mary was herself the source for most of the birth narrative that is particular to Luke. The references to Mary’s interior thoughts, that she “kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19), do seem to point to the fact that she re- membered these things and spoke of them later. Added to the reference Luke makes to traditions, “delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word” (Luke 1:2), it is not out of the realm of possibility that these stories were given to Luke directly by the Holy Mother. Finally, the Magnifi- cat is sung in the Liturgy of the Hours, at a special place during Vespers (the evening prayer) where (when said publicly) the faithful arise and begin by making the Sign of the Cross, then the altar can be incensed during, and it is concluded with a doxology, the Glory Be.

*Editors Note: Last week’s article mistakenly said that this Canticle of Mary was spoken at the Annunciation, it was instead, as we saw above, intoned at the Visitation

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Who is Joseph? JOSEPH Jesus’ Adoptive Father This year is a special year in the Diocese of Charlotte, as this year is the Year of Saint Joseph. He was a man of great faith and obe- dience as he opened his home to Mary and baby Jesus.

Although Joseph doesn’t say a word in scripture, his actions speak volumes of his love for God! It is suspected that Joseph was older than Mary, and perhaps had been a widower. Joseph was engaged to Mary, but then found out she was pregnant. In- stead of putting her in danger, he offered to divorce her quietly. Then, an angel spoke to Joseph—Joseph showed much Faith to become Jesus’ adoptive father on earth.

It was important that Joseph was Jesus’ earthly father, as he was in the line of David. This allows for Jesus to come from the stump of Jesse, as prophesied in the Old Testament. Joseph was a carpenter and taught Jesus how to do the same. He was a good Jewish man who taught Jesus prayers and customs. He raised Jesus as his own son.

“Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah. Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.” - Matthew 1:16-17 SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, November 29: St. Radbod of Utrecht—Bishop St. Radbod was born to a noble family in Friesland, Holland in the early ninth century. He was en- trusted to the care of his uncle, Günther, who was the Archbishop of Cologne. Radbod was educated by Günther from 850 to 863. During this period, Radbod frequently composed poems and hymns about the saints. Radbod was appointed Bishop of Utrecht, Holland in 900 and entered the Benedictine order soon after. While serving as bishop, Radbod was known for his concern for the poor. Later in life he was forced to move his see to Deventer, France following an invasion by the Danes.

Monday, November 30: St. Andrew—Apostle St. Andrew was born in Bethsaida in Galilee. He was the older brother of Simon Peter and, like his brother, was a fish- erman by trade. Andrew was originally a disciple of St. John the Baptist, but after the Baptist pointed out Jesus as being the “Lamb of God” (John 1: 36) and Jesus calling Andrew and his brother to be “fishers of men” (Matthew 4: 19), he began to follow Jesus as one of His Apostles. Andrew is seen a few times thereafter in the Gospels, including when he alerted Jesus to the boy with the loaves and fishes when He fed the multitude. Following the Ascension, Andrew preached in Scythia, Sogdiana, Colchis, and Greece. Some believe he made it as far north as Poland. Andrew received his martyrdom in Patras, Achaia where he was bound and crucified on a cross fashioned in the shape of an “X.”

Tuesday, December 1: St. Eligius—Bishop St. Eligius was born in Chaptelat, France on June 11, 588. He gained renown for his metalwork and was enlisted by King Clotaire II to become master of the mint in Paris. Eligius had a close friendship with the king and became very wealthy. He used his fortune to build churches and monasteries, give to the poor, and buy freedom for slaves. He was given land by King Dagobert I, the son of Clotaire, upon which he built a convent. Eligius was ordained a priest in 640 and later became Bishop of Noyon and Tournai. He traveled frequently and converted many to the Faith.

Wednesday, December 2: Bl. Ivan Sleziuk—Bishop Bl. Ivan Sleziuk was born on January 14, 1896 in Zhyvachiv, Ukraine. He was ordained a priest in 1923 and later consecrated Coadjutor Bishop to Bishop Gregory Khomyshyn in April 1945. Before he could become bishop of the diocese, he was arrested by the Soviets on June 2, 1945 and sentenced to ten years at a labor camp in Vorkuta, Russia. In 1950 he was transferred to a camp in Mordovia. He was released from his false imprisonment on No- vember 15, 1954. Ivan returned to the Ukraine, but was again arrested by the Soviets in 1962 and sentenced to another five years in the labor camps. He was released a second time on November 30, 1968, but was harassed by the KGB for the remainder of his life up until a couple weeks prior to his death. Thursday, December 3: St. Birinus—Bishop St. Birinus was born in Germany around the year 600. After becoming a Benedictine monk, he was consecrated a bishop by Asterius in Genoa. At the request of Pope Honorius I, Birinus trav- eled to where he labored as a missionary. He established several churches and converted many to . Birinus successfully converted King who permitted him to estab- lish a diocese in Dorchester where he served as the first bishop. Birinus is known as the “Apostles of the West .” Friday, December 4: St. Giovanni Calabria—Priest St. Giovanna Calabria was born to a poor family in Verona, Italy on October 8, 1873. Following the death of his father when he was in fourth grade, Giovanni too a job to help support his family. As an adult he served for two years in the military and then went on to prepare for the priesthood. Giovanni was know for his great charity, once taking in an abandoned child and caring for him. Around this time he founded the Charitable Institution for the Assistance to Poor Sick People. On November 26, 1907, he founded the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence.

Saturday, December 5: Bl. Philip Rinaldi—Priest Bl. Philip Rinaldi was born on May 28, 1856 in Lu Monferrato, Italy. At a young age he met St. John Bosco and became interested in the priesthood. When he reached 22 years of age, he fol- lowed Bosco and entered the Salesians. He became an assistant novice master and was ordained a priest. On April 1, 1901 he was appointed Vicar General of the order. During his ministry he es- tablished the Volunteers of Don Bosco, set up several formation centers, and supported the Sale- sian sisters. He became Rector Major of the Salesians on May 24, 1922. MASS INTENTIONS BECOME A PARISHIONER To schedule a Mass intention, please contact the par- ish office at (704) 334-2283, or stop by in person.
