Saturday, September 24 at Miami, Fla. (10:10 a.m. MDT; ABC Split-National) RELEASE NUMBER 3 (September 19, 2005) QUICKLY SPEAKING… The Colorado Buffaloes (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) hit the road for the first time in 2005, and in doing so, will complete perhaps the most-distanced home-and-home in history, returning to southern Florida for the first time since 1991 on Saturday, September 24 to take on the No. 12 Miami Hurricanes (1-1, 1-1 ACC) in a 10:10 a.m. kickoff… ABC will televise the game on a split-national basis, along with Iowa-Ohio State; Brent Musburger (play-by-play), Gary Danielson (analysis) and Jack Arute (sideline reporter) will call the action… This is the return trip by the Buffs to complete a home-and-home series, as the two played in 1993 in Boulder (they played almost to the day 12 years ago, on September 25; see details later in these notes)… The date also marks the 11th anniversary of “The Miracle In Michigan,” when Kordell Stewart and Michael Westbrook hooked up on a 64-yard pass play as time expired rallying the Buffs to a 27-26 win over Michigan in 1994… CU last visited the state of Florida two years ago (dropping a 47-7 decision at Florida State), but was last in the Miami area in 1991, when the Buffs were dealt a 30-25 setback by Alabama in the Blockbuster Bowl… The Miami game concludes non-league play for the Buffs; including that contest, 18 of CU’s last 21 non-league games (dating to 2000) will have been either nationally or regionally televised… The Buffs open Big 12 Conference play the following week (October 1) at Oklahoma State… Head coach Gary Barnett is over .500 for the first time as a Division I-A head coach, as he is now 79-78-1; after being 16 games under two contests into his fourth year at Northwestern, he is 70-53 since (44-33 at Colorado)… CU’s website, www.CUBuffs.com features game day updates and live stats for all games, home and road… Colorado’s next game at Oklahoma State, was not selected for television broadcast and will kickoff in Stillwater at 1:05 p.m. central time (12:05 mountain)… CU’s next home is set for October 8 against Texas A&M; it’s the annual homecoming affair, and about 8,500 tickets remain for the game… DEPTH CHART ON PAGE 40; ROSTER ON PAGES 41-42 IN THE POLLS CU was unranked in both the Associated Press (media) and USA Today Coaches polls of Sept. 18, but received enough votes to rank 32nd in the AP and 33rd by the coaches. The Buffaloes were not ranked in the preseason top 25 or at season’s end in 2004, ending 31st in the coaches and 32 in the AP. Prior to the loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, CU had ascended to its highest point all season, 27th in the AP and 29th in the coaches. The Buffs were last ranked on September 7, 2003, having risen to No. 17 in both after opening 2-0. Dating back to the preseason 1989 polls, CU has been ranked in 182 of the last 267 polls (AP; 69%), which includes a tremendous run of 143 consecutive between 1989 and 1997 (the 10th longest streak of all-time). Since 1989, CU has played the fourth most ranked teams in the nation (83), trailing Florida (91) and Florida State (88) and Michigan (87). STAT OF THE WEEK The Buffaloes call gain of 15 yards or more “explosion” plays, and wanted more on offense and fewer allowed on defense in 2005. Through two games, the numbers are improved in both areas. On offense, CU has 14 plays of 20-plus yards (compared to 48 all of last year), and 41 of 10-plus (145 in ’04); that translates into 28.3 percent of CU’s plays netting double figures compared to 18.4 last year. On defense, it’s drastically different: in 2004, opponents had 60 plays of 20 yards or longer and 183 of 10 or more (20%); to date this fall, only seven have exceeded 20-plus and just 18 have gained 10-plus (13.8%). OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK If there was ever a game where the odds were in favor of one team scoring a non-offensive touchdown, this could be the one. Since 1999, Miami and Colorado have combined to score 86 touchdowns on returns (kickoff, punt, interception, fumble or blocked field goal). The Hurricanes lead the nation over the past seven seasons with 52 (49 regular season, 3 bowl), while the Buffaloes are tied for the seventh most with 34 (30 regular season, a national best four in bowl games). Neither team has a return TD in 2005, however. 2005 COLORADO SCHEDULE (2-0, 0-0 BIG 12) 2005 Date CU* Opponent Opp* TV Result/Time Record Series This-N-That SEPT. 3 NR COLORADO STATE NR TBS W 31-28 0-2 57-18-2 Crosby 47 FG wins it; CU outscores CSU 13-7 in last 2:32 SEPT. 10 NR NEW MEXICO STATE (FN) NR FSN W 39- 0 0-3 1- 0-0 Buff ‘D’ posts first shutout since ’92; NMSU: 5 rush yards Sept. 24 NR at Miami, Fla. 12 ABC 10:10 a.m. 1-1 5- 2-0 Returning ’93 Hurricane appearance in Boulder Oct. 1 at Oklahoma State none 12:05 p.m. 3-0 25-17-1 CU’s win last meeting in Stillwater (’01) started title run OCT. 8 TEXAS A & M (H) TBA TBA 1-1 4- 2-0 Buffs look to avenge 2004 OT loss in College Station Oct. 15 at Texas TBA TBA 3-0 7- 7-0 UT won 3 of last 4, but CU win was in the ’01 title game OCT. 22 KANSAS (FW) TBA TBA 3-0 40-21-3 CU has won 9 of last 10 at Folsom, four straight overall Oct. 29 at Kansas State TBA TBA 2-0 42-17-1 Klatt 64 TD pass to Monteilh with 0:05 left wins ’04 game NOV. 5 MISSOURI TBA TBA 2-1 30-36-3 Barnett 5-1 vs. alma mater (CU leads 17-3 in last 20) Nov. 12 at Iowa State TBA TBA 2-0 46-12-1 CU, ISU garnered majority of preseason Big 12 North votes NOV. 25 NEBRASKA ABC 1:30 p.m. 3-0 17-43-2 CU has won three of last four; NU leads 12-6-1 since ‘86 Dec. 3 Big 12 Championship Game ABC 11:00 a.m. (Houston, Texas) Buffs have appeared in thee of last four title games (All times mountain.
