For every hard-working Sherpa, there is a celebrity working hard to find a loophole. None more so than Vanessa-Mae, the internationally famous musician who was born in Singapore to a Chinese mother and a Thai father. The 35-year-old British citizen chose to represent Thailand in Sochi while competing as Vanessa Vanakorn, using her Thai father??s family name, in the women??s giant slalom skiing. Since he had legally changed his name to Banani, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could not stop him from competing under that name. He made it to Sochi, where he finished 32nd out of 39. Other Olympic chancers almost made it. Paul Bragiel, a 35-year-old American and former Internet entrepreneur, also dreamed of making Sochi. Problem was, he wasn??t proficient at any sport. In any competition, someone naturally has to finish last. Nor should the Olympic ideal of inclusiveness be abandoned. All those athletes, for the record, were given huge ovations by very generous crowds. Simply for being there. However, there is a danger that this lauding of what is still, ultimately, failure, borders on the patronising. Forget the bland cliches; taking part is important, but not more than winning. The tourist athletes are devaluing the competition, and indeed the achievements of the real underdogs, like Sherpa. For now, it seems some underdogs are more equal than others. Before the season was over, the Sabres purged much of their old guard — including captain Jason Pominville — as part of a youth movement to shake up what had been an aging, high-priced and under-achieving core. And more changes could still be store, with goalie Ryan Miller and forward Thomas Vanek’s futures uncertain beyond this season. Both are entering the final years of their contracts, and the Sabres haven’t ruled out trading one or both. That’s left Rolston tempering his early expectations of an opening-day roster that could feature as many as seven rookies, including 18-year-old defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen.

BART PADJASEK Issues Editor Google this week unveiled their long rumoured augmented reality venture, dubbed Pro- ject Glass. They released pictures of an early prototype developed in their labs in Mountain View, Cali- fornia, as well as a mock up video for what they hope the new project will be. Prototype smart glasses from Google Nod of the head The video features a first person view of a man going through his regular routines with the fancy piece of technology on his face. From checking the weather, answering messages and checking GPS, the glasses work much like cur- rent smart phones out in the wild today. The dif- ferences being, instead of taking your smart phone out of your pocket anytime you need to look up information, you have access to it all with a nod of your head.

Kelly ECHL Commissioner Emeritus 2008 Inductee ECHL Hall of Fame Patrick J. Kelly was named Commissioner Emeritus of the ECHL in 1996 after serving as Commissioner for the first eight seasons of the ECHL. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2008. Kelly celebrates his 60th season in hockey in 2012-13, having begun his career with the St. Catherine Teepees of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 1952. He played professionally for the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League, the Trois Riveres Lions in the Quebec League, Troy Bruins of the International Hockey League and the Greensboro Generals of the Eastern Hockey League. He helped Crowland capture the 1948-49 Bantam B Championship of Ontario, beating Peterborough in the finals. He began his coaching career in the Eastern Hockey League, beginning with the Jersey Devils and later with the Clinton (New York) Comets from 1965-73. Clinton was 151-39- 28 and won three straight regular season and postseason titles from 1967-70. In 1967-68, the Comets finished with a 57-5-10 record, making them the only professional team in history to lose only five games or less in a season, and in 1969-70, Kelly was named Minor League Coach of the Year by The Hockey News. Kelly served as head coach and general manager for Charlotte in the Southern Hockey League from 1973-76 guiding the Checkers to a 136-68-12 record, two regular season titles and two postseason titles while earning Coach of the Year honors in the SHL twice.
