Landmark Chicago Record Store Celebrates 20Th Anniversary 1120 N Ashland Ave Chicago, IL 60622 USA [email protected] 773-342-5800 dustygroove.com Media Contact: Karla Grisham ([email protected]) Rick Wojcik ([email protected]) 773-342-5800 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Landmark Chicago Record Store Celebrates 20th Anniversary Dusty Groove Will Celebrate 20 Years In Business With A Block Party On Saturday, July 16, 2016 CHICAGO, May 3, 2016 – Dusty Groove (https://www.dustygroove.com), one of the best record stores in America, turns twenty this spring. After rising from humble beginnings in a back-alley on Chicago’s south side, the store has gone on to be hailed as a premier shop for rare and obscure vinyl records by such outlets as Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, Wall Street Journal, and Readers Digest. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Dusty Groove will host an outdoor block party on Saturday, July 16, 2016. The event will be at 1120 N Ashland Ave, from noon to 5pm, free of charge, and will feature music, DJ sets, food, and giveaways. “A party lets us show our appreciation after so many years of enthusiastic customer support,” says owner Rick Wojcik. Dusty Groove started as an e-commerce music retailer in the spring of 1996. With no storefront at the time, Wojcik and co-founder JP Schauer, two DJs who worked at the University Of Chicago’s WHPK radio station, ran the business out of a small studio apartment as a hobby. As the website took off, the operation was relocated to a ground floor apartment behind a fruit market in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood with an alley-facing entrance. The unit had been abruptly vacated by a neighborhood call girl, so the landlord offered a very favorable rate. However, lack of street access and other amenities made the location less than ideal for starting a high-end mail order vinyl record business. Online-only vinyl record sales kept growing, and the office was opened once a month to local Chicago customers. Demand for a retail store led Dusty Groove to move into a loft space in the Wicker Park neighborhood in 1997 and open its doors to the general public on weekends. In 2001, Dusty Groove purchased the building at its present location of 1120 N Ashland Ave so that it could remain open seven days a week. (cont.) Despite challenges in the music business, Wojcik attributes Dusty Groove’s ability to grow and expand over the years to its diverse array of customers. “We never would have made it so far without their support,” says Wojcik. “They continue to teach us more about music than we ever would have learned on our own.” Dusty Groove attracts visitors from distant locations such as London, Berlin, Tokyo, and Sydney, who exhibit a diversity of age, ethnicity, and musical taste. “Customers certainly keep us on our toes, and thanks to the constant connection we have via the internet and the store, we’re always fine-tuning our operation in an effort to serve them better,” Wojcik notes. “We have had top-notch staff and employees over the years,” adds Wojcik. “In the 20 years we’ve been around, it’s been an honor to work with some of the folks who’ve helped make the company great. In addition to wonderful people who continue to work here, we’ve also had employees go on to become poets, professors, painters, policemen, rock stars, and a number of other professions.” Online customers who may not be able to attend the block party are also invited celebrate at https://www.dustygroove.com, where the store will be giving away $20 gift certificates to the 20th online customer every day, for the 20 days leading up to the 20th anniversary party. Additionally, Dusty Groove is offering a range of limited-run items: T-shirts, bags, DJ equipment, toys, and novelties (including a whoopee cushion). Details and updates about the 20th anniversary celebration can be found on Dusty Groove’s website at https://www.dustygroove.com/dustygroove20. JEFF STAFFORD TAGS ARTS AND CULTURE The record industry seemed headed for oblivion in the early Nineties and then something unexpected happened. A whole new generation of music lovers created a vinyl renaissance that continues to grow at a surprising rate. According to a recent Forbes magazine article, vinyl record sales are projected to earn close to one billion dollars for the first time this century. www.amoeba.com Streaming music services may have their converts but collectors of vinyl prefer the tactile sensation of holding an album, putting it on the turntable, studying the cover and liner notes and listening to the unmistakable sound of an authentic vinyl recording, imperfections and all. Another part of the appeal for vinyl fans is hunting for rare LPs or longdesired acquisitions in stores where the employees are more likely to be selftaught musicologists who can advise and aid them in their audio explorations. Here is just a small sampling of some of the most beloved vinyl meccas in the U.S. from coast to coast. Amoeba Music, Los Angeles, California www.amoeba.com The gold standard among independent music chains, Amoeba opened its first store in Berkeley, California in 1990, added a second store in San Francisco in 1997 and followed that with a third outlet in Los Angeles in 2001. A onestop destination for buying CDs, DVDs, BluRays and especially used and new vinyl, Amoeba can be an overwhelming experience due to the sheer volume of pop culture on display.

  • Record Store Day: 10 Great American Record Shops by Douglas Wolk
Saturday, Apr. 16, 2011 Record Store Day: 10 Great American Record Shops By Douglas Wolk This Saturday, April 16, is the fourth annual Record Store Day, when around 700 independent record shops across the country celebrate their continued existence as a cultural institution. Some will have sales, giveaways, performances and signings; upwards of 200 different limited-edition vinyl records and CDs will be appearing on their racks, too. Though most of the big music chains have shuttered their doors in recent years, many smaller, quirkier stores have stayed afloat by cultivating loyal customers and integrating themselves into local music scenes. Here are ten of the best. Other Music: New York, NY This downtown NYC fixture opened in 1995, in the most unlikely spot imaginable for an independent record store with a focus on underground, experimental and forgotten sounds: across the street from a mammoth Tower Records. Now Tower is long gone and Other endures, with a thriving mail-order business and a huge selection of otherwise-impossible-to-find CDs, records, DVDs, and even the odd cassette. "We have a really loyal following — customers who come in every week," says owner Chris Vanderloo. On Record Store Day, the store will be hosting an intimate performance by Regina Spektor and an exhibition of '80s-era fanzines. Treehouse Records: Minneapolis, MN Next weekend marks Treehouse's tenth anniversary in the Minneapolis spot that formerly housed another legendary record shop, Oar Folkjokeopus, which had been the Twin Cities' punk rock headquarters in the early '80s. "We've always been vinyl snobs here," says the store's manager Dan Cote, "and vinyl coming back into vogue has played into our hands.

Bledsoe 2 Bledsoe - DMA Harp Performance University of Washington Abstract The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor of Flute Donna Shin, Chair Instrumental Performance, School of Music The harp has endured a tenuous relationship with the genres of jazz and American popular music throughout history. While a few harpists have enjoyed successful and significant careers in these fields, the harp is largely absent from mainstream jazz and American pop. The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain a definitive cause for such exclusion and use this information to identify a feasible path toward further integration of the harp in jazz and American pop music. This paper examines the state of the harp in jazz and American pop from various angles, including historical perspective, analytical assessment, and a study which compares harpists’ improvisational abilities to those of their mainstream jazz instrumentalist counterparts. These evaluations yield an encompassing view of the harp’s specific advantages and detriments in the areas of jazz and American pop. The result of this research points to a need for specialization among harpists, particularly in defining new styles. It is evident that harpists’ careers generally necessitate a working knowledge of various styles of music.
