There have been a few changes at SOMSR since the last issue of Cutting Edge. A familiar face has gone and new ones have taken their places on the Committee. After more than ten years on the SOMSR Committee and having in recent years held the position of Chairman, David James has decided to step down to allow newer members to come to the fore as he announced in the Summer magazine. At the recent Cutting Edge/SOMSR AGM everyone attending thanked David for his work over the years. In his place as Chairman we welcome Darren Slater who runs his own shop in Perth in Scotland. He is joined by new Vice Chairman, Alan Davies an experienced shoe repairer from Jarrow in the North East of England. Both men come to the committee with strong views which should make for interesting times for SOMSR in the near future.

In the Summer issue of Cutting Edge magazine we included a feature about 70 year old Nottinghamshire repairer, Barry Hazard who had recently retired after 55 years in the trade with a company that had been trading for almost 100 years and asked readers to let us know if they could beat those statistics... Well, very soon after the magazine went out we were contacted by Brian Curry whose family business has been based in Bury St Edmunds for over 150 years, 58 of them in their current premises. Brian told us that he joined his father in the trade full time at the age of 15 back in 1961 though he had been helping out after school and during the holidays since the age of 12! He remembers repairing hob nail boots but he says there was no moulded footwear back in those days.
