Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida claims top spot in men’s indoor track: At the end of the two-day gamut of ups and downs that is the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champion- ships, Florida coach Mike Holloway had a hard time thinking of anything that went wrong for the Gators. “I don’t know,” Holloway said. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I had a stomachache for a couple of days.” There’s no doubt Holloway left the Randal Tyson Track Center feeling better on Saturday night. That’s because a near-fl awless performance by the top-ranked Gators re- sulted in the school’s fi rst indoor national championship. Florida had come close before, fi nishing second three times in Holloway’s seven previous years as head coach. “It’s been a long journey and I’m just so proud of my staff . I’m so proud of my athletes and everybody associated with the program,” Holloway said. “I’m almost at a loss for words; that’s how happy I am. “It’s just an amazing feeling, an absolutely amazing feeling.” Florida began the day with 20 points, four behind host Arkansas, but had loads of chances to score and didn’t waste time getting started. After No. 2 Oregon took the lead with 33 points behind a world-record performance in the heptathlon from Ashton Eaton and a solid showing in the mile, Florida picked up seven points in the 400-meter dash.

EXT. OLYMPIC STADIUM TRACK 4X4 RELAY- -- AFTERNOON Fade in on GERALD TINKER'S eyes. They have a intense focus and stare directly ahead into space. As he blinks, a drop of sweat drips from his forehead in slow motion. The camera closes in on one of his eyes until all we see is the black of his pupil. A gun shot goes off and echoes in repetition. EXT. COCONUT GROVE DRUG STORE -- NIGHT Police cars pulling up to a drug store with lights flashing and sirens wailing. Several policemen run from their cars with guns drawn and enter the store. EXT. COCONUT GROVE DRUG STORE -- MOMENTS LATER Police exit the drug store with JIMMY,a handcuffed black youth of eight. A crowd has gathered and jeer the officers as they escort the youth to a waiting patrol car. An older black woman, BESSIE TINKER, sixty-five with salt and pepper hair, steps through the surrounding crowd and calls out to the boy. BESSIE Jimmy, is that you? Lord, what have you done now? Bessie walks with a limp, dragging one foot on the ground as she moves towards an older Black Officer, who seems to be in charge of the situation. Lloyd ‘Bud’ Winter – San Jose Staté: 1940-1970 Posthumous 2010 Pacific Association Legacy Coach Award Recipient Lloyd ‘Bud’ Winter, architect of ‘Speed City’ who propelled San Jose Staté to the pinnacle of track and field during the mid-1900s is the 2010 Posthumous recipient of the Pacific Association legacy coach award. Coach Winter created a legacy not only through his ability to coach, but also through his ability to mentor other coaching hopefuls, and promote the sport of track and field. In all, he would coach 102 All Americans, 27 Olympians, and 49 NCAA- and 37 world- record holders throughout his career as the Spartans’ coach, which took place between 1940 and 1970. Notable Spartans include sprinters Ray Norton and Bob Poynter, ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world, respectively, during the late 1950s and 1960; 1968 Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who placed first and third, respectively, in the 200 meters, and Lee Evans, who took the gold in the 400, and on the 1600- meter relay team; Ben Tucker, a prominent member of SJSC’s ’62 and ’63 NCAA cross country championship teams; Olympian Willie Steele, who captured the gold in the long jump in ’48 (He competed at SJS before enlisting in World War II.); and ’68 Olympic Greek pole vaulter Christos Papanikolaou, who became the first to vault 18 feet. Of Winter’s nomination, Poynter noted: Other track and field coaches – such as Stanford University’s Payton Jordan or the University of Oregon’s Bill Bowerman – may have received more recognition and acceptance because their programs had great wealth and media support, but Bud was a creative, competitive, fun-loving teacher, who had great passion for the sport.
