COURSE OVERVIEW: YEAR II LONGITUDINAL EXPERIENCE IN COMMUNITY OTOLARYNGOLOGY- HEAD & NECK SURGERY

The Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Longitudinal Experience (OHNS-LE) is a new initiative offered by the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery to encourage student exposure to otolaryngology - head and neck surgery at community sites. During OHNS-LE, students will participate in community-based otolaryngology - head and neck surgery over four afternoons spread throughout the second year of pre-clerkship. These half days would encompass

3 2013• OHNS HANDBOOK clinic and operative exposure. This handbook can be used to identify potential preceptors and establish contact prior to initiating a longitudinal experience. Once a preceptor has been selected, please contact the undergraduate medical education director, Dr. Al Chiodo ([email protected]) or the undergraduate administrator, Sandra Kellogg ([email protected]). Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate preceptor. Dates may be arranged and agreed on jointly by the student and preceptor once your request has been approved.

The goal of OHNS-LE is for students to develop an appreciation of the importance of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in a community setting. During OHNS-LE, students can practice some of the basic history-taking and physical examination skills learned in ASCM-1 and ASCM-2 along with reinforcing the knowledge learned in the MMMD course. Students may have an opportunity to accompany preceptors in the operating room and in most cases being the first assistant in operations.
