Toronto Bruce Trail Club Halton Hills Chapter

Photo: Linda Wheaton

This photo of the Chapter’s volunteers was taken in August 2015 at the Acton Leathertown Festival. Janet Le Lievre had just received a $1,000 USD Volunteer Recognition Award from her employer E.I. DuPont Canada Company. 1st row: Pat Ferris, Sara Maedel 2nd row: Laurie Fountain, Heinz Rusche, Maureen Smith, Francis Walker, Janet Le Lievre, Margaret Teasdale, Gloria Sargent, Don Sargent 3rd row: Rob Currie, Paul Vanhanen, Angelika Sommer, Linda Wheaton, Rosalind Harrison, Greg Harrison.

The Halton Hills Chapter, centered in Georgetown, was formed in March 2000 by Maureen Smith, after she moved from to Georgetown. Maureen is a Past President of the Toronto Club and a BTC Honorary Life Member.

Since it was started, the Chapter has been active in the local community, participating in events such as the Sweet Taste of Spring Pancake Breakfast, Acton Leathertown Festival, Annual Earth Day and Sustainability Fair, and The Georgetown Farmers’ Market, to name just a few. Members of the Chapter represent the Bruce Trail on forums such as Dufferin Aggregates Acton Quarry Community Advisory Panel, and the Town of Halton Hills Trails Advisory Committee, and support preservation initiatives such as the Limehouse Kiln Society, Friends of Scotsdale Farm, and the Barber Dynamo.

Most members of the Chapter are wearing double, triple and even quadruple hats - half of them are also trail captains, and they also volunteer for land stewardship, helping out at events like Bruce Trail Day and the Annual General Meeting, and participating on committees. The Land Management Committee in particular benefits by having members who live near the trail and bring local knowledge of business and government events and decisions.

The Chapter’s quarterly newsletter can be found on the Toronto Club website. It provides information on local events, and lists the Chapter’s hiking program (these hikes are not listed in Footnotes or in the website Hiking Schedule). All of the hike leaders have either Toronto Club or Hike Ontario certification. And after a hike, there may be a stop at local venue (it varies depending on the hike) as a way of giving back to the community/local businesses where the trail runs through.

For more information, contact Janet Le Lievre [email protected]

Bruce Trail Conservancy 2017 Annual General Meeting

Save the Date! This year, the Toronto Club will have the honour of hosting the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s Annual General Meeting. The AGM will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23rd at the Teatro Conference Centre, 121 Chisholm Drive, Milton. A full weekend of fun events and stimulating hikes is being organized by our volunteer committee members.

This will be the last of the five AGMs organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Bruce Trail Conservancy. It will be a memorable event – please plan to be there!

Help the Toronto Club ‘go green’

The Bruce Trail offers you the option to have Footnotes delivered electronically instead of ‘in the mail’. E-delivery has a number of benefits, for both you and the club: • less paper consumed, more trees preserved • less money spent on printing and postage, more on land securement • you get Footnotes earlier (when it goes to the printer) • it is in colour (printed version is black and white)

It’s a six-step process: 1. go to the BTC web site: http://brucetrail.org/ 2. log in (click on ‘member login’ and enter username and password) 3. click on “settings” 4. click on “manage newsletter subscriptions” 5. make your selections - for e-delivery of Footnotes, tick the box “Newsletter & Hike Schedule from my Club(s) by email”. 6. click “update”

Opting to receive the BTC e-news and Club email updates will keep you up-to-date between the quarterly magazine deliveries.
