8Days /7 Nights: Tarangire - Ngorongoro - Serengeti - Lake Natron - Lake Manyara 8DAYS /7 NIGHTS: TARANGIRE - NGORONGORO - SERENGETI - LAKE NATRON - LAKE MANYARA HIGHLIGHTS You’ll stay in remote and beautiful safari accommodation including Lobo Wildlife Lodge where an array of wildlife will come up to the lodge day and night. As well as visiting the iconic Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park you will see the less well known but spectacular Tarangire and Lake Natron. Highlights of the tour include visiting: • Tarangire National Park • Serengeti National Park • Ngorongoro Crater • Lake Natron • Lake Manyara ITINERARY Day 1: Arrive in Arusha Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred to Moivaro Coffee Lodge where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Meru as you prepare for your trip. Accommodation: Moivaro Coffee Lodge Meals: Breakfast and dinner Day 2: Arusha - Tarangire National Park After breakfast, we set off for Tarangire National Park, famous for its tree climbing pythons, massive baobab trees and large herds of elephants. Tarangire National Park may be small but it is still home to a significant wildlife population, with a density of wildlife matched only by Ngorongoro. Accommodation: Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater After breakfast, you will be driven into the Ngorongoro Crater for your early morning game drive. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is the crater, a large unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. The crater formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago. It’s 610 m (2,000 ft.) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 square meters). Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from fifteen to nineteen thousand feet (4,500 to 5,800 meters) high. The crater is famous for the big 5 animals (Lion, Elephants, Rhino, Leopard, and Buffalo). Other animals you will see are Zebras, Gazelle, Wildebeest, Impalas, Hippos and different species of birds. Accommodation: Rhino Lodge Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 4: Serengeti National Park After an early breakfast, we head for Serengeti with a packed lunch. Serengeti is the oldest and most popular national park, famous for its annual wildebeest migration. Zebra and thomson gazelle join the trek in search of fresh grazing. Some of the other animals found in Serengeti are buffalo, giraffes, elands, topi, kongoni, impalas, grant gazelles, lions, cheetahs, leopards and jackals. Accommodation: Lobo Wildlife Lodge Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 5: Serengeti Full Day After breakfast, continue with full day migration viewing in Serengeti National Park with packed lunch. Serengeti National Park is widely regarded as the best wildlife reserve in Africa due to its density of predators and prey, and the great wildebeest migration. Accommodation: Lobo Wildlife Lodge Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 6: Lake Natron After breakfast, depart to Lake Natron with packed lunch, crossing Loliondo on Waso Village, before heading down to the lake shores. Enjoy walks out on the mud flats around the shores of Lake Natron, viewing the lesser East African flamingo. Together with a local guide, make your way to the waterfalls for some relaxation and swimming before returning to Natron Tented Camp. Accommodation: Natron Tented Camp Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 7: Lake Manyara National Park After breakfast, we set off from Lake Natron to Lake Manyara National Park. The park is 127 square miles (329 km2) and the lake's alkaline waters cover approximately 89 square miles (231 km2). While most known for baboons, the lake and its surrounding area are home to other wildlife such as hippos, impalas, elephants, wildebeest, buffalo, warthogs and giraffes. You may also see the park’s famous tree climbing lions. Accommodation: Lake Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 8: Lake Manyara - Kilimanjaro International Airport After breakfast, you will check out from the camp and be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home. Meals: Breakfast ACCOMMODATION MOIVARO COFFEE LODGE Moivaro Lodge is situated right in the heart of beautiful, natural scenery and yet is only 7 km from the town of Arusha: an ideal spot to enjoy the impressive flora and fauna of Tanzania. The spacious thatched brick cottages are set in a lovely tropical garden, with private verandas ensuring every visitor all the privacy needed. Relax and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Meru from the comfortable veranda, go for a stroll around the Moivaro property, or laze at the pool nestling in the midst of tropical trees and coffee plants MANYARA WILDLIFE LODGE Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge is strategically located on the very edge of the steep western escarpment of the Rift Valley, with magnificent views down across the lake. Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge offers an unforgettable safari experience because of its privileged location, unrivalled by any other, both for game viewing and scenery. Elegantly designed with authentic traditional African style decorations this is a place where you can enjoy both tranquility and an adventure-packed safari experience at the same time. All the Lodges’s 100 guestrooms have stunning views across the tranquil and beautiful waters of the Lake. There’s a swimming pool for you to cool off in after your game drives and the restaurant has breathtaking views and fresh, tasty food. The bar is a friendly meeting point where guests can enjoy sundowners and relive the day’s adventures on the terrace overlooking Lake Manyara. RHINO LODGE Rhino Lodge is in a great location facing dense forest on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater, close to the rim. It's refreshingly simple with a relaxed atmosphere, and is operated in conjunction with the governing body of the area's Maasai, to ensure that they benefit from the lodge's success. Almost all the staff come from the local village, and part of the lodge's income goes directly to the Maasai community LOBO WILDLIFE LODGE Lobo Wildlife Lodge the largest lodge on the migration route where it's elevated position means that the migration can be viewed from the comfort of a sun lounger. You can watch and witness the migration even from the pool. Artistically made of stone and local timber around clusters of large boulders, harmoniously merging with its surroundings, the Lodge affords from its raised location stunning views of the most amazing natural spectacle to be seen on Earth. A waterhole below the Lodge attracts a variety of wildlife during the day and is lit each evening, revealing an interesting array of nocturnal animals, providing a close encounter with the very authentic wildlife. All the Lodge’s 75 elegant guestrooms afford superb views of this unbelievable natural phenomenon, and the sumptuous swimming pool is situated on the very edge of the rock, offering uninterrupted views of the horizon. NATRON TENTED CAMP Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction – the area around the lake inhabited by Maasai is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful. Situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God), Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. The lake is home to millions of tiny crustaceans, attracting literally thousands of lesser flamingo’s and it is therefore one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth. Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Tented Camp is set back in a grove of trees adjacent to the shores of the lake. Basic but clean safari tents offer showers, comfortable beds and a private veranda. A fully stocked bar and candle lit restaurant ensure you have a cold drink and delicious food at the end of an arduous climb or long days walking. Even if you have been there before, it “never gets old.” Our tour includes world-class birding and abundant wildlife views of the big mammals: elephant, Giraffe, zebra, African Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah in the famous national parks and of Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro (conservation area), and, of course, the Serengeti. Arusha National Park is a small but popular park with great birding and extinct volcanoes covered in thick forest. Tarangire National Park is famous for the many baobab trees and high elephant populations. Lake Manyara National Park is a comparatively compact area nestled beneath the cliffs of the Great Rift Valley with spring-fed forests, thick acacia bush, and a soda lake, which, at times, holds a large variety of waterbirds including flamingos, ibises, storks, and ducks. Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, but also famous for the grasslands and lakes of the crater floor, where we may find the endangered Black Rhinoceros. The main tour ends in the Serengeti. A vast unspoiled, rolling savannah and woodlands, which hosts the most spectacular concentration of animals during migration and calving. Over one million Blue Wildebeests (along with hundreds of thousands of Thomson’s Gazelles and Common Zebras can be found in the huge park during February- March. A moderately paced tour with good-to-excellent accommodations (in lodges as well as tents).

  • Community-Based Conservation in Tanzania
Partitioned Nature, Privileged Knowledge: Community-based Conservation in Tanzania Mara Goldman ABSTRACT Community Based Conservation (CBC) has become the catch-all solution to the social and ecological problems plaguing traditional top-down, protection- ist conservation approaches. CBC has been particularly popular throughout Africa as a way to gain local support for wildlife conservation measures that have previously excluded local people and their development needs. This article shows that, despite the rhetoric of devolution and participation asso- ciated with new CBC models, conservation planning in Tanzania remains a top-down endeavour, with communities and their specialized socio-ecological knowledge delegated to the margins. In addition to the difficulties associated with the transfer of power from state to community hands, CBC also poses complex challenges to the culture or institution of conservation. Using the example of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem, the author shows how local knowledge and the complexities of ecological processes challenge the conven- tional zone-based conservation models, and argues that the insights of local Maasai knowledge claims could better reflect the ecological and social goals of the new CBC rhetoric. INTRODUCTION Community Based Conservation (CBC) has become the recognized trade- mark of what many claim is a ‘new conservation’ unfolding across Africa (Hulme and Murphree, 1999; cf. Hulme and Murphree, 2001). In response to the recognized failure of top-down approaches to development and eco- logical limits of protectionist (‘fortress’) conservation, ‘the community’ has become the catch-all solution for effective conservation and development (McNaughton, 1989; McNeely, 1995; Western and Wright, 1994). CBC shifts the focus of conservation from nature as protected through exclusive state control, to nature as managed through inclusive, participatory, com- munity-based endeavours.

16 participantsLimited to tanzania safari The GreaT MiGraTion ~ February 7-20, 2018 (14 days) with Drs. Corrie Moreau and David Willard © Joseph Paszczyk “The safari brought us close to the untamed Africa where humanity evolved.” Dear Members and Friends, I invite you to join The Field Museum on our classic Tanzania Safari. Field scientists explore countries around the world, but we return to Tanzania nearly every year. Journeying through the impressive wildlife, beauty, and diversity in this African terrain highlights what is best about science at the Museum – the privilege of exploring and learning from the world around us. We schedule our visit to the Serengeti to experience one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth – the Great Wildebeest Migration. Witnessing the migration, which includes an estimated 1.4 million wildebeest, is an experience I will never forget. Jan and I traveled to Tanzania with the Field in 2016, and our experience was made magical by the Field Museum scientists who led the trip. The 2018 Tanzania Safari will be led by the very same scientists, Drs. Corrie Moreau and David Willard. After traveling © Joseph Paszczyk with Corrie and Dave, I can attest their knowledge brings an entire- ly new dynamic. They are experts in their fields, and we relished the opportunity to see Africa through their eyes. They shared amazing insights about what we saw and made it all the more meaningful by relating it to research happening at the Museum. The Tanzania Safari is designed to ensure you experience African wildlife at its best. The unhurried pace with five full days in the Serengeti and two in Ngorongoro Crater ensures more time for observation and photography and less time spent traveling between sites.

I can promise you if this is your first trip to Africa, “Africa will change your life forever.” Located in East Africa, Tanzania is known for its vast wilderness and wildlife areas including the plains of the famed Serengeti, lovely and quiet Tarangire, Lake Manyara bordered by the Great Rift Valley, and the vast Ngorongoro Crater. Throughout my 40 years of working with exotic animals from all over the world, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. There is no place on earth where you can see so many incredible animals up close and every day. You’ll discover this for yourself as daily game drives allow us to explore the habitats in which so many thrive. Very good are our chances of seeing the “big five” - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. Tanzania is also one of the best places for spotting cheetahs. Add to the list zebra, wildebeest, hippo, giraffe, antelope, dik-dik, gazelle, eland, kudo, and more than 1,000 bird species, and we’ve just scratched the surface of what this wildlife mecca has in store. Visits to and/or with some of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s conservation partners are also planned so you can see firsthand how these partnerships benefit the wildlife and people of Tanzania.

  • Spatial and Temporal Variations in the Abundance and Diversity of Phytoplankton in Lake Manyara, Tanzania
International Journal of Innovative Studies in Aquatic Biology and Fisheries (IJISABF) Volume 1, Issue 1, June 2015, PP 1-14 www.arcjournals.org Spatial and Temporal Variations in the Abundance and Diversity of Phytoplankton in Lake Manyara, Tanzania 1*Kihwele, E.S., 2Lugomela, C., 2Howell, K.M., Nonga, H.E. 1Tanzania National Park, Arusha, Tanzania. 2University of Dar es Salaam, Dares Salaam, Tanzania 3Department of Veterinary Medicine and Public Health, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania. *[email protected] Abstract: This study evaluated the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton species diversity and abundance in relation to some physico-chemical parameters in Lake Manyara for a period of fourteen consecutive months (between July 2007 and August 2008). The aim was to relate the temporal variability in the physico-chemical parameters of the lake to the abundance and diversity of phytoplankton. Three sampling sites were established in the lake, and data were collected once every month. Electrical conductivity, salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen; turbidity, transparency and pH were measured in-situ using a water quality checker Water samples for nutrients and phytoplankton abundance and species composition were analysed at the University of Dar es Salaam. In the laboratory, the concentration for inorganic nutrients were determined using a Shimadzu UV-spectrophotometer. Salinity and pH values in the lake ranged from 0.1 ‰ to 40 ‰ and from 6.23 to 10.67 respectively. However, there were shift in phytoplankton community dominance between Anabaena sp to Arthrospira sp likely due to differences in salinity and pH thresholds requirements. Nitrate, phosphate and ammonium concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 3.2 µg/l, 0.5 to 570 µg/l and 0.5 to 10.5 µg/l respectively while conductivity varied between 8.7 to 84.5 mS/cm.
