Dunaliella salina has been recognized as a model organism for stress response research due to its high capacity to tolerate extreme salt stress. A proteomic approach based on isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) was used to analyze the proteome of D. salina during early response to salt stress and identify the differentially abundant proteins (DAPs). A total of 141 DAPs were identified in salt-treated samples, including 75 upregulated and 66 downregulated DAPs after 3 and 24 h of salt stress. -

The strains were identified based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) markers. The phylogenetic tree revealed these strains belong to the clades of Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella viridis . Results of this study confirm the ubiquitous nature of Dunaliella and suggest that strains of Dunaliella salina might be acquired locally worldwide for the production of beta-carotene. The identification of these species infers the presence of other Dunaliella species ( Dunaliella tertiolecta , Dunaliella primolecta , Dunaliella parva ), but further investigation would be required to confirm their presence in Vietnam. We anticipate the physiological and biochemical characteristics of these local species will be compared with imported strains in a future effort. This will facilitate selection of strains with the best potential for exploitation in the food, aquaculture and biofuel industries. -
Terrestrial Insects and Climate Change: Adaptive Responses in Key Traits

Understanding and predicting how adaptation will contribute to species’ resilience to climate change will be paramount to successfully managing biodiversity for conservation, agriculture, and human health-related purposes. Making predictions that capture how species will respond to climate change requires an understanding of how key traits and environmental drivers interact to shape fitness in a changing world. Current trait-based models suggest that low- to mid-latitude populations will be most at risk, although these models focus on upper thermal limits, which may not be the most important trait driving species’ distributions and fitness under climate change. In this review, we discuss how different traits (stress, fitness and phenology) might contribute and interact to shape insect responses to climate change. We examine the potential for adaptive genetic and plastic responses in these key traits and show that, although there is evidence of range shifts and trait changes, explicit consideration of what underpins these changes, be that genetic or plastic responses, is largely missing. Despite little empirical evidence for adaptive shifts, incorporating adaptation into models of climate change resilience is essential for predicting how species will respond under climate change. We are making some headway, although more data are needed, especially from taxonomic groups outside of Drosophila, and across diverse geographical regions. Climate change responses are likely to be complex, and such complexity will be difficult to capture in laboratory experiments. -

The au thors speculated that the individuals originated from Czech territory. To understand the con text of their records, it is necessary to take into account the recent distribution of this species in the Czech Republic. Approximately since the 1950s, this butterfly species had been declining and gradually disap peared from both Bohemia and Moravia (Novak & Liska, 1997; Lastuvka, 1998; Beun, 1999), although there were occasional invasions followed by establishments of transient populations, such as near Pribram in the 1970s (Zeleny, 1977). -

(A concise checklist of the species can be found in Table 4, page 120.) Distribution maps are included as well as 18 colour plates covering all but one species. Where no specimens of a particular spe cies from the Philippines were available to us, illustrations are given of specimens from outside the Philippines. In total we have listed 117 species (with 5 additional subspecies where more than one subspecies of a species exists in the Philippines). Four tables are provided: 1) a breakdown of the number of species and endemic species/subspecies for each subfamily, tribe and genus of Philippine Sphingidae; 2) an evaluation of the number of species as well as endemic species/subspecies per island for the nine largest islands of the Philippines plus one small island group for comparison; 3) an evaluation of the Sphingidae endemicity for each of Vane-Wright’s (1990) faunal regions. From these tables it can be readily deduced that the highest species counts can be encountered on the islands of Palawan (73 species), Luzon (72), Mindanao, Leyte and Negros (62 each). -
Floristic Study of Bryophytes in a Subtropical Forest of Nabeup-Ri at Aewol Gotjawal, Jejudo Island

A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. (Asteraceae) в Республике Алтай Работа выполнена в рамках проекта «Оценка морфогенетического потенциала популяций растений Северной Азии экспериментальными методами» (рег. номер 0312-2014-0001) при частичной поддержке Российского фонда фундаментальных исследований (рег. номер 0312-2014-0001). Представлены результаты исследований четырех ценопопуляций редкого вида B. krylovii в Центральном Алтае. Установлено, что под влиянием антропогенного воздействия (проведение круглогодичного выпаса) в ценопопуляциях B. krylovii происходит изменение жизненной формы от кустарника с немногочисленными побегами к вынужденному многопобеговому полукустарничку, что способствует поддержанию целостности популяции. При наличии выпаса происходят периодическое повреждение годичных побегов и нарушение возможности лигнификации особей; переход к жизненной форме полукустарничка сопровождается более интенсивным побегообразованием и увеличением числа генеративных побегов. Stuttgart, 10. 8. 1999 New Views on the Relationships among European Pleurocarpous Mosses By Lars Hedenäs, Stockholm With 2 figures Summary An overview is given of the results of higher level cladistic studies of pleurocarpous moss- es, and the implications of these for the classification of severel larger families represented in Europe. Starting with the more ancestral taxa, the traditional Isobryales forms a basal grade, followed by another grade including taxa with capsules of Brachytbecwm-sha.pc. The latter grade includes taxa such as the Brachytheciaceae, Ctenidiaceae, and Hylocomiaceae, as well as the subfamily Heterocladioideae of the Thuidiaceae. The Amblystegiaceae, Rhytidiaceae, the temperate members of the Hypnaceae, and the Thuidiceae (excl. the Heterocladioideae) form a monophyletic group, with the Plagiotheciaecae as their sister group. The few European members of the Callicostaceae, Hokeriaceae, Leucomiaceae, and Sematophyllaceae belong to another monophyletic group with mainly tropical and subtropical members. The tropical members of the traditionally heterogeneous Hypnaceae are not closely related to the temper- ate members found in Europe. Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit stellt die Ergebnisse einer Stammbaumanalyse der Großgruppen pleurokarper Moose und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Einteilung einiger größerer in Europa vertretener Fa- milien dar. Wenn man mit den ursprünglichen Gruppen beginnt, stehen die Isobryales im her- kömmlichen Sinn an der Basis, darauf folgen als weitere Verwandschaftsgruppe die Vertreter mit Brachythecwm-artig gebauten Kapseln. Letztere umfaßt Gruppen wie die Brachythecia- ceae, Ctenidiaceae und Hylocomiaceae sowie die Unterfamilie Heterocladioideae der Thui- diaceae. -

Dichodontium verrucosum Card. is regarded as conspecific with D. pellucidum ( Hedw.) Schimp. Dichodontium opacifolium Dix. is regarded as conspecific with D. brasiliense Broth. The placement of this species in the genus Dichodontium is doubtful. Dichodontium nelsonii Kindb. proved to be Bartramia pomiformis Hedw. Dichodontium debile Broth. and D. integrum Sak. remain dubious species because of a lack of type material and references. Dichodontium pellucidum (Hedw.) Schimp. is lectotypified. Zusammenfassung: Die 8 bisher in der Gattung Dichodontium eingeschlossenen Arten werden auf 3 reduziert. Dichodontium verrucosum Card. ist synonym mit D. pellucidum (Hedw.) Schimp. Dichodontium opacifolium Dix. ist synonym mit D. brasiliense Broth., wobei die Zugehörigkeit dieser Art zur Gattung Dichodontium nicht vollkommen geklärt ist. Dichodontium nelsonii Kindb. stellte sich als Bartramia pomiformis Hedw. heraus. Dichodontium debile Broth. und D. integrum Sak. bleiben aufgrund von fehlendem Typusmaterial unrevidiert. Dichodontium pellucidum (Hedw.) Schimp. wird lektotypifiziert. In der Gattung Dichodontium waren laut Index repräsentatives Herbarmaterial des Natur- Muscorum (Wijk et al. 1959) 43 Arten beschrie- historischen Museums London (BM), des Bota- ben worden, von denen 10 akzeptiert waren.
