If you want to be wildly successful with dance music, you’ve got to pick a helmet. After all, it worked for Daft Punk. It worked for deadmau5. It could work for Joman too.

“If I had to pick an elaborate helmet, it would be a mantis hat. I have a design that I kind of drew for a logo. I love praying mantises.”

Bringing said mantis hat to fruition isn’t exactly at the top of Joman’s to-do list, but re- rubbing a certain rodent runner’s unreleased banger is.

“I did a deadmau5 remix for Beatport’s ‘SOFI Needs a Ladder’ competition. Voting opens today and ends on the 26th, I believe. The winner gets to open for deadmau5 at an upcoming gig. Six thousand dollars worth of Beatport shwag, shirts and a gift card are also up for grabs.”

Considering deadmau5ʹs uber-massive current popularity, the competition will inevitably be stiff. Joman’s got a legitimate shot, though. Even though he’s only 22, he’s been tinkering with beats for nearly ten years now.

“My first ‘studio’, per se, was just a surround sound system and a big screen TV. I had my custom-built desktop hooked up to the TV via an S-video cable. So I was squinting when I was looking at the screen, then I would figure it out and make music. I was constantly putting on a show for all my friends. They’d flip out when I’d make some beat they really liked.”

“In 2008, Vanish picked me up on Velcro City Records. He came up to me at Skylab that year. I had a table set up where I was selling CDs. I was giddy that someone was talking to me. I hopped on board, and it was probably the best stepping stone so far. I went from being completely anonymous to actually getting gigs and having Beatport releases.”

Joman sings in Church this Friday

Although it’s not as easy as it used to be, getting a track on Beatport is feasible. Charting is the hard part. Not for Joman. “Tha Illest”, a collaboration he did with Hero featuring both Oh Shit and Messinian, moved a respectable number of units. Others’ renditions of Joman’s originals have performed well too. Ishe’s dubstep mix of “These Breaks” peaked at 26.

“I have two fundamental techniques. One is jumping around like a jackass in front of my computer for nine or ten hours until magic happens. The other is pumping out random garbage, file after file, for awhile. Then, armed with the wisdom of hindsight, I return to those tracks and open ‘em up one by one. If one sounds good, I’ll know I can probably take it somewhere.”

“Kaskade put it best: ‘I don’t concern myself with sales or whether or not something’s gonna chart because I know that for every person who buys one of my tracks or albums, they’re passing it off to 30 other people.’ That’s how I look at Beatport sales. I remember hearing [Beatport CEO] Jonas Tempel play ‘Another Late Night’ at Beta, and there were people in the audience that knew the lyrics. There were people mouthing the words. That was amazing to me.”

Unless you’re Amish (or living under a rock in Romania), you’re aware that Colorado’s music scene has been exploding like the Big Bang in recent years. Ambassadors like and The Fray have infiltrated both FM radio and MTV, moving millions of units in the process. Devotchka scored the hit indie comedy Little Miss Sunshine. Matt Morris sang with on the telethon in January. And 3OH!3 (zero relationship to this publication) landed a much coveted spot on the soundtrack to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which opens Fryday. The list goes on.

Colorado’s electronic music scene is thriving too. Beatport, dance music’s top digital retailer, may have benefitted from early partnerships with Richie Hawtin and Bad Boy Bill, but its primary developers were Denverites (the company has since opened a satellite office in Berlin). Beta Nightclub, owned primarily by Beatport’s Brad Roulier, has nabbed bragging rights including “Best New Club” and “#1 U.S. Club”. Dragon, one of Beta’s resident DJs, recently orchestrated another Mile High milestone: Homegrown. Compiled by the Triad mascot, Homegrown is a mixed CD consisting of primarily Colorado producers. Pretty Lights, Shawn Astrom, Ty Tek, Venaccio, Satori-C, Entropy, Lea Luna, Sonaris, mLe, Shawn Mitiska, Joman, Sir Thomas, Jquintel, Manufactured Superstars, Dirt Monkey, Savoy, Kostas K, Samples, Jontron and Dragon himself are among the individual artists included. Ishe’s dubstep re-rub of my recent Velcro City Records release (featuring guitar from Vance Hatfield and Sammy T) made the cut as well.

Colorado’s rad. Captain Obvious strikes again. This Thursday, March 4, we’ll have a shiny new drink coaster to prove it. The first 500 through the door will score a complimentary copy. Inhabitants of Oz will be on hand to assist with distribution, as it’s also the official launch party for Beta’s new fairytale-themed event series. Both Dorothy and The Scarecrow will be autographing Finding Oz flyers (featuring the photography of Jonathan Shoup). Toto’s John Hancock will cost you, though, as it would require teaching an ankle-biter how to operate a writing utensil first.

Jason Schlosky has long had a thing for hooks and loops. Velcro City Records, the Denver-based dance music label he founded with DJ Hero (no relation to the video game of the same name), benefits from nostalgia value associated with the patented “zipperless zipper” system invented by Swiss engineer George de Mestral. Hooks and loops, an idea http://www.blog.303magazine.com/?s=Joman Page 5 of 7 » Search Results » Joman 11/16/10 12:53 PM

de Mestral ganked from Mother Nature (burdock burrs, specifically), are the functional foundation for the popular textile technology. They play a similarly essential role in the creation of electronic music. Where would techno and its related electronica genres or aural cousins be without hooks and loops?

With the advice of Beatport’s Matt Carmichael and the studio expertise of Hero in his corner, Schlosky launched VCR in May 2008. Known in the aural realm as DJ Vanish, Schlosky started off with a bi-weekly release schedule but has since doubled output to keep pace with growing numbers of label submissions. A posse of Mile High club members now call Velcro City home. Ishe, mLe, Kaya, Satori-C, Adam Arete, Kaution, Joman and myself are among them. Hero is VCR’s primary breadwinner thus far, having recently scored his very own artist page on Beatport.

“Pussy Whipped”, my debut release on Velcro City, drops this Wednesday, February 10 on Beatport. The original mix was produced primarily by PJ Stroller (with support from Satori-C) and features contributions from MC Deadlip, Vance Hatfield and Sammy T. Re- rubs were manhandled by Arete & Kaution, Ishe and Greg Campbell & Digital Jacq. Sean Foreman (3OH!3), Boreta (Glitch Mob), DJ Bedz (Nuggets/Pepsi), Brian Howe (XM Radio), DJ Harry (Sci-Fidelity) and others have endorsed the track at one point or another. Join us this coming Hump Day eve–February 10–at Andrew’s on Lincoln (1111 Lincoln) for the official hoedown featuring Ishe, Greg Campbell, Kaya, Tony K, Arete & Kaution and, all the way from Californication HQ, MC Deadlip.
