Staff Development Day That weekend following our sports day when teachers spent time together and learned from each other! This year, they went to Taiwan. They visited universities and talked about their life at university. They also visited tourist spots and went cycling! Trying out local dishes is a must when travelling and they did! Yay! Here we have some sharing in an interview with Mr. Li, Mr. Chow, Mr. Chipman and Ms. Ng. By Bennette 5B

1. From all the activities you participated in, which one was your most favorite one ?

Mr. Li: The cycling activity because we got to spend time with each other, enjoyed the refreshing breeze and environment.

Mr. Chow: The dinner. They prepared some delicious meals. It was very good. I liked the Guava from Taiwan the most.

Mr. Chipman: Getting to ride a bicycle again because I haven’t been on a bicycle in 2 years. The environment in makes it difficult to frequently ride a bicycle. I even got to reminisce those times I got to ride a bicycle from my house to school.

Ms. Ng: The cycling activity too. It was another experience and it was different from HK. We got to see the farmland.

2. What’s something you will never forget from the trip?

Mr. Li: The travelling time. It took 8 hours on a coach, but we got to see the coastline. Fruits in Taiwan, especially the pineapple was delicious.

Mr. Chow: Taking the old train. We got to see the wonderful scenery and the coastal area.

1 Mr. Chipman: (Giggles!) Mr. Riz’s reaction when we went swimming at 12am. He went into the water like a wimp. It was hilarious.

Ms. Ng: The long coach trip. The scenery was just wonderful. It seemed like Yuen Long because of the old buildings.

By Mykel 5B

Did you join any event in our recent inter-house annual sports day? It was a new atmosphere in which houses - blue, red, and yellow, competed and showed their effort to win for their houses which encouraged sportsmanship and teamwork among students, teachers and parents. Sports day is a major event in our school, not only to show sportsmanship and teamwork, but to enhance students’ confidence and arouse students’ interest towards sports.

So, do you know who won the overall house champion? It’s no other than Red House! Students from the red house won several events which made them win this award. Next is the overall cheering champion. Do you know which house won the championship? Yes it’s no other than the blue house sharks! Their unique and catchy dance steps made them outstanding among other houses and the energy and formation of its members made the performance great! On the other hand, the Red House and Yellow House YOLO lions did an amazing job, which gained them a round of applause and cheers! 2012-2013

Introduction

This year’s annual Multicultural Week (Variety Show) took place on the 14th December, 2012 (Friday) and was held in our school hall. This year’s main theme was “Half the Sky”, which symbolized women’s rights and also a tribute to Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old activist who promotes women’s education in Pakistan. This year’s highlights in the Variety Show were: the opening portion of the annual Multicultural Week (Variety Show), Mr. Lo dancing the massive k-pop hit “Gangnam Style”, various performances from the English Section and the Chinese Section and amazing performances from our alumni. It began with our Headmaster, Mr. Tsui, and the two Ms Lees singing the theme song of this year’s Multicultural Festival “Perfect Harmony”. After that, four performers from the Chinese section appeared, performing a Chinese traditional dance. After they were done, they rushed behind the stage curtain. Then, a few minutes later, the curtains opened again and it was Mr. Lo dressed up similar to PSY with his back up dancers dressed up like K-pop dancers and they started dancing the k-pop hit song “Gangnam Style”.

Performances

We had around ten performers and the performances included were: Nepali traditional dancing, beat boxing, rapping, singing and dancing. The performances in the Variety Show were really amazing and epic. Among the past 3 years, I think this year’s Variety Show is one of the best because it is really unique and fresh as we saw a teacher dancing the hit song ‘Gangnam Style’ and hopefully next year’s show will be even better than this year’s.

8 Being a multi-national school with different cultural backgrounds, our school celebrates every culture through a variety of ways. This year the French Club held a very interesting activity in order to promote French culture. French Café was organized and held by our lovely F.3 students with assistance from Mr. McDonough and Mr.Gourley. It was held on 5th December, 2012 on the school rooftop from 3-5pm. If you miss this fun activity, you may want to read this article as it will tell you about the Café and the follow-up events that will come soon. According to Mr. McDonough, the main objective was to promote French culture and help F.1 & F.2 students interact in French.

9 As we see from the photos, we can feel the passion for learning and enjoying French. Moreover, activities such as tasting French food and watching French songs and videos made the whole atmosphere more vivid and

authentic.

If you miss the Café last December, don’t worry. Another French Café will be held at the end of February. So don’t miss it this time. See you there~

INTRODUCTION By: Kevin 3B (16)

We all live in Hong Kong, but we do not know if our surrounding is haunted, especially since we live in Hong Kong; I personally think that it is good to know some local ghost stories because through them we can learn the history and culture of Hong Kong in the most interesting way. The following stories are some of the most well-known stories we have in Hong Kong.

 (南固臺南固臺南固臺南固臺)

Location: Ship Street,

Nam Koo Terrace is also known as “the Haunted House of Wan Chai”. It is an old mansion located in Ship Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The mansion was owned by a rich family from Shanghai. However, the family was forced to evacuate the mansion during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. Nam

The front of the house Koo Terrace was then used as a comfort house of the Japanese soldiers. During the stay of the Japanese soldiers in the mansion; they would keep some women and kept them one by one in each room of the mansion and raped them or killed them. Till now the spirits are said to be wandering around the mansion.

Lately, there were some paranormal activities that took place in the mansion: fire balls were seen by the neighbors around the mansion, some screaming noises were heard by residents of the street and there was even one which was published in the newspaper in 2003: there was a group of teenagers (boys and girls) playing some “spirit games” (Chinese Ouija board game) on the lower side of the staircase in front of the mansion. Suddenly, one of the teenagers saw a shadow of a girl Possessed girl tackled by 5 policemen waving at her at the end of the staircase, so the group of friends hysterically ran straight all the way to (a street near Ship Street). When they arrived, one of the girls within the group became possessed by an evil spirit. The other friends and passers-by called the police. When the police arrived, they had to

11

tackle the “possessed girl”. It was even reported in the newspaper that it took 5 policemen to take the possessed girl down. The ambulance later arrived and sent the girls to the nearby . The girl was kept in the hospital for one night only; as after a loud noise similar to that of a gunshot was heard, the possessed girl suddenly “went back to normal” and wondered why she was in hospital. Ever since this incident, the haunted house was permanently closed and sold to a developer. Lover’s Rock

Location: Bowen Road, Wan Chai

Lover’s Rock is located in Bowen road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The Lover’s rock is known for charming lovers. If you made a wish towards it, you will have a happy marriage and brighter love life. The story of the lover’s rock is about two lovers: a British soldier and a Chinese Fisherwoman who fell in love with each other long time ago. However, the parents of the girl’s side didn’t Lover’s rock want their daughter to be married with a foreigner. One day, the soldier found out that he would be sent back to his home town soon. So, they both met up at the place where the yet-to-be-named Lover’s rock is situated and promised to the rock: to bless other peoples’ relationship and to make their love life successful. After a few days, they ended their life together just to be side by side for eternity. Their death was a mystery: some say they jumped to their deaths from Lover’s Rock. Others believe they hanged themselves on a tree close by. After their death, some people could see their spirits wandering (during the morning or in the early evening) around the rock and they believe that, their spirits could still be “dating”.

Tsat Tsz Mui Road (七姊妹)

Location: Tsat Tsz Mui Road, North Point

Tsat Tsz Mui Road is located in North Point near Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. Tsat Tsz Mui means seven sisters. The reason why the road was named seven sisters because there was a story about seven girls who were playmates. They pledged to be sisters in their Tsat Tsz Mui Road lifetime and die on the same day and never get married. Until one day, one of the sister’s parents decided to make their daughter marry a man, but she didn’t dare to refuse her parents. On the day before the wedding, she ran away and met up with her “sisters”.

12

They went to a shore nearby, tying their braided hairs together side by side, and jumped off the seashore to commit suicide. The next day, at the bay, appeared seven rocks. The villagers believed that they must be the seven sisters. The rocks were then named Tsat Tsz Mui Shek, which no longer exists now because of land reclamation in North Point to create tramway tracks.

After their death, many strange incidents happened, especially to men. During the year of 1912, the newspaper reported about a strange incident where several female workers were cutting grass along the hill, suddenly heard a man crying for help. They went searching around the hill and finally discovered that this man was trapped beneath two extremely huge boulder rocks near the sea, so they called the police. When they arrived, the cries for help became weaker, so they had to immediately begin the long rescue mission. A large audience and lots of food vendors gathered to watch, turning the place into a carnival. Despite the effort, the next day, the man was still “trapped”. Coincidentally, some British navy had just arrived and lent the latest rock-boring equipment device to the police. After 4 hours of drilling, a pale-looking unconscious man in his 30s half submerged in water was revealed. They sent him to the hospital in which he later regained consciousness and woke up. It was discovered that he was a worker at the nearby popular North Point Candy Factory(now closed) who took a half day sick leave and wandered along the seaside, as he explains to the police how two beautiful women came to him and led him to five other women that offered him food and some drinks. Next day, when he woke up, he was trapped in a tiny space between two massive boulders. It was still a mystery how this man got into the rock boulders in the first place. Even after the road was developed, their spirits still wander around to find their next victim…

Ah Temple Run! What’s not to love about an indie explorer trying to run for his life from mystical-looking monkeys that have freakishly huge and long arms that aid them to run? Not only that, he seems to run continuously in a water- surrounded maze of paths that do not even make sense. For example, you turn left for four times, that makes a square but when you are running supposedly in that senseless maze, you just keep on going and going and going on… or at least until you trip, lose balance or fall off the path and then you just start all over again. Basically, the idea is that you have stolen a mystical figure (I’d personally prefer to call it a doll) from a sacred temple that somehow reminds me of the Aztec temples in Mexico and you are running away for your life.

Obviously belonging to a lifeless person, the highest score for temple run is currently 2,147,483,647 points or more. Yet, these scores are only for those who have signed in “The Game Centre”, which is technically the online game center for updating your achievements on the apps you have downloaded.

This Imangi masterpiece has rocked the App industry and has taken it to new heights! In fact, there’s another version of Temple Run in which the movie BRAVE is based on. It is essentially the same game, but with the difference being that the indie kind of explorer to princess Merida, the water-surrounded paths to being the forest and the freakishly long and buff-armed monkeys to being a freakishly huge bear that naturally has freakishly buff arms (no difference there, really!)

14

Despite this being either pointless to some people or addicting to others, some have gone so desperate that they go online to look for cheats, hints, etc. Yet again, maybe it’s just temptation calling to them…. If you think temptation is calling YOU? You can always go to http://www.gamerevolution.com/cheats/temple-run (YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!!) Or maybe you already have?

By Jenny Khan 5C I will be sharing a book I read 2 years ago; however I still keep reading it and watch its film.

The Notebook is written by Nicholas Sparks and it was based on a true story. The novel was later adapted into a popular romance film of the same name, The Notebook, in 2004. I love Nicholas Sparks; I read most of his novels. I also watched most of the films, which got adapted from the books like the Message in a Bottle, A Walk To Remember, Dear John, The Last Song.

The Notebook focuses on a story told by an old man, which happens to be his story. He will overcome with his emotions, as this relationship unfolds the missing pieces of Noah and Allie's story. Their story is revealed in the notebook that he carries with him. Noah and Allie’s relationship was a troublesome one with all the conflict of division of class. Do they still get to be together? Read and see!

Everything that Sparks wrote was very realistic. He made it sound like a poem which it isn’t. Yet of course, he made it simply romantic.

Both the novel and movie will leave you hanging for more stories like that. Yes, it is a cliché but we girls love it, and maybe…so do guys. If you have not read the book nor watch the movie, start reading or watching or both! The Notebook will leave you emotionally spent and thankful to be so. You must also read the rest of his books, which I mentioned above, trust me, it will leave you begging for more.

On average, every human intakes four meals a day, but it’s rare for most of the people to consume breakfast excluding those living in developed countries where breakfast is given the essential part of our daily diet. A Research has proved that “Breakfast provides the essential energy required for the whole day boosting immunity and metabolism.”

The importance of breakfast isn’t well informed to the people but it is practiced in many health centers. In many of the developed countries, breakfast is preferred within an hour before they start their day. Similarly, countries like Japan, rural areas of China and other south Asian countries prefer normal meal as breakfast itself. Athletes are also provided to enhance their performance.

Breakfast has many things to be done in our body rather than being just a phase of a diet. Statistics shows that countries where breakfast is a part of the meal has lower mortality rate. Hence, WHO is continuously putting an effort in raising the awareness of students on the importance of taking breakfast.

According to some experts, breakfast is a very important part of your day. They stress that to have a smart mind in the early morning. You’ll need a healthy breakfast. The brain needs to have a good amount of nutrition for your brain to work. Plus according to some scientists, skipping breakfast will only lead to more gain in weight instead of helping you lose weight.

23 24 Our life without gadgetsOur gadgets By Bennette 5B Our generation is filled with the latest technology that our mind never imagined could be possible. With the first invention of mobile phones, do you still remember those old times? Those big and bulky mobile phones our mother or father had. Now, the evolution of mobile phones has changed, to the design, the functions, speed, and so much more.

A good example would be the new iPhone 5. It is way lighter, faster and thinner than the past generations of iPhones, as so they say. BUT, we have another competitor. The new “Designed for humans” Samsung Galaxy S3. With all the newest technology around, how can we cope with what’s the latest? Are we outdated? What’s in? What’s out? Hold that train of thought! Let’s think for a

second what our lives would be like WITHOUT all this

technology…

Imagine having to meet a friend without a phone. You would have to call their home phone and tell them where exactly to meet and at what time, or else you and your friend would be lost. Imagine staying at home with no form of entertainment, for example, your high definition television (Maybe even 3D) or even your fast and clear computer or laptop. You would most likely be socializing with your peers outside your home or finding your own ways of entertainment like developing a hobby, OR even doing your homework. We would be updating our friends in person, rather than through technology, wouldn’t we?

Let’s admit life has been pretty easy with the use of technology. It has brought you closer to your friends and family, brought you entertainment, and could even help you do your homework more efficiently. However, technology could also be a waste of time when used wrongly. Let’s not abuse it!

29 T WO W ORD S: TWO WORDS: EEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXAAAAAAAAMMMMSSSSSSSS SUCKS!

Exams are just a waste of time, right? Well, some of you certainly agree with me, as it disturbs our free time. Instead of playing LoL or hanging out with friends, we end up at the detention area or at home just to study for our “EXAMS’. We live in an examination culture and it sucks a lot. The worst thing is you need GCSE and HKDSE and get A grade for universities to consider you but then why are exams important/necessary? Save trees, Stop Exams! But then have you thought of school life without exams? Some may say it’s fun and free; some may say that it’s boring; some may say it’s weird. Yes, there are mixed feelings, as different people have different attitudes and perspectives towards life.

But then, exams are the way to test our knowledge. Without conducting the exams and tests, we won’t concentrate in our studies and learn our lessons properly. Exams are necessary in schools and colleges to find out the real skills, talents and knowledge of the students. Most students study to achieve good marks in exams. Ironically, we hate exams but we still work hard because we know it’s important. Somehow this kind of attitude creates competition among us as students, which changes our mindset towards exams to achieve higher and better marks. Some of us may think that exams are not necessary for school and college, but this kind of attitude is wrong. Without exams we will be tension- free and we can never concentrate on our studies and lessons.

Exams teach us a lot of things and give training to various things like punctuality, writing skills, time management, expressing our thoughts and opinions and so on. Without exams, it is very hard to find out the real knowledge of an individual student. Besides, students will lose their motivation with their studies. With this examination method, we, students will develop fear towards our exams and study our lessons properly to increase our knowledge as well as to get high marks in our class. By Mykel 5B
