Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas
5 Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Rem Koolhaas Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical projects, traces the discursive practice analyse behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office + OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes—such as wall, void, tur montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape—that have tek structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas’s Essays on the History of Ideas oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles archi manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re- Ingrid Böck applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas’s individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work’s relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which OMA has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject—Rem Koolhaas—and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas. Ingrid Böck is a researcher at the Institute of Architectural Theory, Art History and Cultural Studies at the Graz Ingrid Böck University of Technology, Austria. “Despite the prominence and notoriety of Rem Koolhaas … there is not a single piece of scholarly writing coming close to the … length, to the intensity, or to the methodological rigor found in the manuscript -

The paper argues that urban proposals of Le Corbusier arise from the study of the history of architecture. Through a com- parison of his journey impressions with his urban projects, this paper demonstrates that the ideas and perceptions that determined Le Corbusier proposals were extracted and interpreted from the study that the young architect carried out of the settlements and cities of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean in his well-known Voyage d’Orient. “The Nude Man's City”: Flávio De Carvalho's Anthropophagic
“The Nude Man’s City”: Flávio de Carvalho’s anthropophagic architecture as cultural criticism* Panu Minkkinen Abstract. Cannibalism is one of the most recognisable taboos of the West and a benchmark with which a supposedly civilised world has traditionally sought to differentiate itself from the radically “other” of the hinterlands. As such, cannibalism has made its way both into the vocabulary of the West’s pseudo-ethnographic self-reflection (e.g. Freud) and the imaginary of its literary culture (e.g. Grimm). A less-well-known strain in this narrative uses cannibalism as a critical postcolonial metaphor. In 1928, the Brazilian poet and agitator Oswald de Andrade published a short text entitled “Anthropophagic Manifesto.” The aim of the manifesto was to distance an emerging Brazilian modernism from the European ideals that the São Paulo bourgeoisie uncritically embraced, and to synthesise more avant-garde ideas with aspects from the cultures of the indigenous Amazonian peoples into a truly national cultural movement. This essay draws on various aspects of the anthropophagic movement and seeks to understand, whether (and how) it influenced Brazilian urban planning and architecture, and especially if it is detectable in the ways in which architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed and executed the legal and political institutions in Brasília, the country’s iconic federal capital. The analysis, however, identifies a colonialist inclination in Costa and Niemeyer’s ideological debt to Le Corbusier. Instead, the radical potential of anthropophagic architecture is developed with reference to the less-known São Paulo architect and polymath Flávio de Carvalho whose aesthetic politics provide parallels with contemporary radical politics, as well. -

The proposals are analyzed in light of the influence that the city has in turn exercised on a part of the twentieth century European architectural thinking, showing how its very presence has conditioned urban and architectural theories. -

La Ligne Claire De Le Corbusier. Time, Space, and Sequential Narratives
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.814 La Ligne Claire de Le Corbusier. Time, Space, and Sequential Narratives L.M. Lus Arana Profesor Ayudante Doctor. Área de Composición Arquitectónica. Escuela de Ingeniería y Arquitectura, Universidad de Zaragoza Abstract: In 1921, issue 11-12 of L’Esprit Nouveau featured an article entitled “Toepffer, précurseur du cinema” where Le Corbusier, signing as ‘De Fayet’, vindicated the figure of Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846), a Swiss a pioneer of comics, as a key element in the development of cinema. Marginal as it may seem, this reference unveils a deeper relationship between Jeanneret and Töpffer’s work which started in his childhood, and would have a key role in the development of some of Le Corbusier’s trademark obsessions: travel, drawing, and cinematic narratives. In this context, “La Ligne Claire de Le Corbusier” proposes a close examination of the presence of graphic narrative and its aesthetics in Le Corbusier's early work in relation to its evolution from a sequential promenade architecturale to multispatial enjambment. The paper explores themes such as narrative and the inclusion of time in le Corbusier's Purist paintings, or his evolution from a painterly approach to drawing to an idealized, linear and synthetic rendering style. Keywords: Sequence; Enjambment; Purism; Avant-Garde; Töpffer ; Bande Dessinée. 1. Introduction: Le Corbusier, the Arts, and the Media In November 1921, issue 11-12 of L’Esprit Nouveau featured an article entitled “Toepffer, précurseur du cinema”1. Signed by De Fayet, a penname shared by Amédée Ozenfant and Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, it vindicated the figure of Rodolphe Töpffer, and was accompanied by a selection of comic strips from Monsieur Pencil (created in 1831 and published in 1840), and Le Docteur Festus (1831/1846). -

Social turbulences and discontinuities of the 20th century, have as always reflected upon scientific and creative achievements, most visible in changes in architectural thought and relation to space. First half of the 20th century was shaped by the modernist movement, represented through technical and technological achievements of building into economy, social context and culture giving an overall sense of units and spirt of urbanism and architecture of the modern era. In architecture there is a special place for the architect of the new era Le Corbusier whose narrative shaped and dominated the urban and architectural medium. Through research one can draw an analogy conceived by Le Corbusier between a typical serial housing unit and his functionalist urban and regional planning. He was at the same time praised and despised, but has definitely shaped the urban landscape as we know it today. Through research into his essence and paradigms and contribution, this paper aims to reflect his urban design process that originated in multiplication and standardization of single units (family or collective) combined with his visions for an expanding cityscape. Key words: Le Corbusier, XX century, modernism, architecture, urbanism, urban planning 1. INTRODUCTION The entire 20th century was shaped by tumultuous social upheavals characterized by bustling social flows, increased individual comfort and prosperity, as well as numerous crises and turmoil. -
