Roten, S.M * The way of beauty (via pulchritudinis) is an expression coined by Paul VI on May 16, 1975.1 In his closing address to the participants of the Mario logical Congress held in Rome, he outlined a twofold approach to the figure and reality of Mary: there is first the way of the learned ones, mariologists and the­ ologians of various colors (couleurs), who reach out to Mary in biblical, historical, and theological speculation. They walk the way of truth (via veritatis). There exists a second way accessible to everybody, simple souls included, which Paul VI called the via pulchritudinis (way of beauty). Did Paul VI in­ tend with these distinctions some sort of programmatic decla­ ration, as commentators thought and still believe?2 This does not seem likely. The scope of the Pope's address was to high­ light the specific theme of the 1975 Roman Marian Congress, which dealt with the relationship between Mary and the Holy Spirit.

Ryan, Ph.D.* Associate Professor, Division of Liberal Arts (Religious Studies), Rivier College I’m offering this reflection because I bantered with Brother Paul a couple of days ago. I told him that since this was my baptismal day, I only wanted something simple, a cake, perhaps, after Mass. Then he asked if I would like to offer the reflection. I said “no” (just like Mary would and as if I don’t have enough to do right now). But then I said yes – to challenge myself to work with my own family inheritance of “specialness” on account of Mary and also because we Catholics have a rich inheritance of feasts, doctrines, documents, practices and beliefs that we have to make sense of and find meaning in. The college has encouraged certain confusion about Mary and me. I was born November 21st, the feast of the Presentation of Mary in 1950, the year the Assumption of Mary was proclaimed an official church dogma. Each November 21st I have to remind myself that the celebrations aren’t for me! I was baptized Virginia Maria Assumpta and December 8th was intentionally chosen for my baptismal date. And, if that wasn’t enough, my mother and father adopted two children, my brother and sister, and seventeen years after their wedding, when my mother was 39 and my father 48, I was born. (Remember that Elizabeth’s pregnancy at a ripe old age was meant to be a sign to Mary that Gabriel was legit!) The feast could be called the Immaculate Misperception in that many Catholics don’t know what the feast celebrates.

    THE PRESENTATION OF MARY IN THE TEMPLE The Earthly Sanctuary Mary’s Humility The Presentation of Mary in the Temple – November 21st November 21, 2019 GOSPEL: Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28 EPISTLE: Hebrews 9:1-11 INTRODUCTION The primary importance of the Virgin Mary to the Church is the Incarnation. Because of this, the Virgin Mary is usually portrayed in iconography as holding her young Son. The message proclaimed by the icon is that God has come in the flesh, and here is proof: His mother holding her Son. This study seeks to introduce aspects of the life of the Virgin Mary that are not very commonly known from an historical viewpoint. The significance of some of the events in the life of the Virgin Mary including her place among the saints in glory is covered quite well in The Life of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Apostles Convent, which is recommended for further reading. One can divide up the life of the Virgin Mary into four parts, each of which produced major changes in her life. These four periods of her life are covered in this study as follows: DATES PERIOD FEAST DAY Part I 20 BC to 5 BC Birth to Annunciation Nativity of Mary; Presentation of Mary in the Temple Part II 5 BC to 1 BC Annunciation to Infancy Annunciation of Jesus Part III 1 BC to 30 AD Jesus’ Life & Ministry See Appendix B Part IV 30 AD to 55 AD Pentecost to Her Death Dormition of Mary Parts I and IV use historical writings as their primary source with Scriptural references woven in where appropriate.

    Chapter 3 Mulier Amicta Sole: Bonaventure’s Preaching on the Marian Mode of the Incarnation and Marian Mediation in His Sermons on the Annunciation J. Isaac Goff Bonaventure’s homiletical works on Mary provide a wealth of insight into his mature and maturing views on the person and role of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and are pivotal in grasping the development of his Marian thought that began in his scholastic works.1 His vision of the ‘Woman’ is couched within, yet helps illumine, his presentation of the Trinity, Christology, Anthropology, and Sacra- mental theology, providing many key links between these different areas of his theological reflections. Together Bonaventure’s sermons on the Blessed Virgin Mary provide the general outline of what later systematic Mariologies would treat. His presentation of Mary’s role in both the order of the Incarnation and her mediatory role in the Church, especially as it relates to questions of Pneu- matology, has, arguably, not been surpassed. Bonaventure’s two sermons2 on the Annunciation, the topic of this es- say, provide a striking picture of Mary’s unique sanctity and singular agency 1 These sermons are divided according to the solemnities of the Purification, Annunciation, Assumption, and Nativity of Mary. A larger collection of twenty-four sermons on Mary were first gathered and published in 1901 in a single volume in Bonaventure, Sermones de tempore, de Sanctis, de B. Virgine Maria et de diversis, Opera Omnia, 10 vols., eds. PP. Collegii a S. Bo- naventurae (Quaracchi, 1882–1902), vol. 9, 633–721. A new critical edition of Bonaventure’s Marian discourses was published in 1993, which retains only nine of the original twenty-four sermons and adds collation 6 of Collationes de septem donis Spiritus sancti as the second sermon on the Annunciation for a total of ten.

    Presentation of Mary: The meeting place of human and divine by Joyce Meyer Nov. 19, 2015 in Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and the feast of Mary being presented in the Temple is celebrated November 21, within the same week. Of course the feast is special to the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but it is a feast that has iconic implications for all of us. It is a story of family and all the cultural implications and complications this involves; it is a story of a familyʼs relationship to God; it is a story of a female figure important not only to Christians but Muslims and Jews as well; and it is also an icon of the cosmos. Although not found in Scripture, the story of Mary's presentation is an apocryphal story appearing in other early Christian writings. Anna and Joaquim, Mary's parents, presented her in the Temple as a gesture of gratitude to God for the end of a painful time in their lives. This "miracle" child, according to the Protoevangelicum of James, was the answer to infertility of a couple who waited with longing and prayer for a child. According to the Islamic version, which I discovered in a 2003 edition of The Economist, Anna and Joaquim were finally "expecting a child who would perform unique services to God and were therefore surprised when the baby turned out to be a girl." In this rendition of the story, Anna and Joaquim's response to the prophecy and gift was a promise to give Mary over to Temple life until she was at least 14 years old and engaged to Joseph, a widower.
