Helen Keller Day

In 1971, the Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International declared that 1 would be remembered as Day. Lions around the world implement sight- related service projects on Helen Keller Day.

Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA, in 1880, Helen Keller developed a fever at 18 months of age that left her blind and deaf.

With the help of an exceptional teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan of the Perkins School for the Blind, Helen Keller learned sign language and braille. A few years later, she learned to speak. As an adult she became a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. And in 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."

The Lions accepted her challenge and our work ever since has includ- ed sight programs aimed at preventable blindness.

Dear Lions of District 5M9, As your Governor this past year, the respect, support and kindness you have shown me is a prime example of who we are in 5M9. I am so proud of how our Lions Clubs serve their communities – both local and world-wide. You have given me the opportunity to learn and grow and how very true when it is said; “Where there is a need there is a Lion” Please join me for the end of my year party (Mini Forum) – everyone is invited. RSVP me so I know how many to plan on the food thing you know! [email protected] Deerwood Auditorium 23770 Forest Rd. Deerwood, MN 56444 September 29, 2019, 12:00p.m. I am planning on brunch or lunch, a speaker (yet to be determined) and also a few special recognitions. Hope- fully we will be done with enough time to enjoy our Sunday football. I would like to share a quote sent to me from a member of the Bluffton Lions.

“Life should not be a journey with the intention of arriving safely at the end, but rather to skid in sideway, chocolate in one hand, red wine in the other totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride”!

THANK YOU, District Governor Rose

Page 2 DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT SANDY REMINGTON

It is now June and the unofficial start of summer. April had a great ending as we had our multiple convention, and many of you met Vice President Choi for the first time. You found out then that his big push this next year will be LCIF'S Campaign 100. So far our Multiple District has raised more money than any other Multiple in North America. YEAH MD5M!!! In addition to this, we also held a fund raiser for Pediatric Cancer Foundation. It was a head shaving challenge. From the Multiple, we were able to raise $16,186. 5M9 had 3 volunteers. Jay and Linda Norby and I were brave souls who sacrificed our hair for over $600 in donations. I know there were pictures on Facebook, but I can't find them now that I want them. Thank you to all of you who attended College of Leadership last month. We had 50 people who came to learn what is new in Lions. Secretaries and Zone Chairs are asked to attend the training sessions on June 22nd at the Bluffton Community Center. A light lunch will be served at 11:30 and classes will follow. August 28th is 5M9's day to man the Kid Sight Foundation's booth at the Minnesota State Fair. If you are interested in volunteering, please notify Jay Norby. There are still a couple if openings in our Cabinet. We need a Zone Chair for Zone 6 and a Service Chair for our Global Service Chair position. If you have an interest in either of these, please contact me.

June 1st is Helen Keller Day. June 5th is World Environment Day. June 7th is Lions Clubs International Birthday. Happy Birthday to all you Lions out there!

Here's hoping that it warms up soon!

Yours in Lionism , DGE Cassandra Remington

CATCH THE BALL AND PASS IT ON

In just a month, the “elect” comes off my title and I will be the 1st. VDG. DGE Sandy Remington will become our new District Governor, and our team is happy to announce and welcome 2nd VGD Jamie Huttunen. At this time, I want to thank our present Governor, DG Rose Puckett for a wonderful year of representing our district. She did such an awesome job inspiring us with our many Lions projects. For me, I want to espe- cially thank Rose for her guidance as I move up the district governor ladder. June is the month when statistically we see our membership drop. Please do not let this happen in your clubs. If you see members who are fading from volunteering, not showing up for meeting, now would be a good time to contact them and see if maybe they have ideas, maybe pick them up for a meeting, or have them help with a summer project. With all projects, there are jobs which certain people do best and like to Outgoing Can Do Canine project chair do. Help them figure this out. How about a membership growth for Bonnie Genin is pleased to introduce Sheri Greenwaldt the incoming project June instead of the membership loss. chair. Sheri will bring her enthusiasm and add a new twist to the project as she covers zones 5,6,7,8 and 9 Dear Lions of 5m9 As one of the Lions Clubs International Foundation coordinators of 5m9 I am requesting that your clubs and members consider making an additional donation to the LCIF Disaster Fund. This can be designated to the ongoing tornado's, floods etc. disasters which continue to affect our country. These donations from both club and members will count towards the Campaign 100. When your members make a donation this will be credited to your clubs account. Checks should be made out to LCIF Disaster Fund and sent to me or you can donate directly to LCIF. I just ask that you let me know if you do it online so I can keep a record. If you know the club number put that on the check too. Thank you for your past support of your foundation, LCIF

Zone Chair, Tom Plagman, complimented the Lions Clubs for their perfect attendance. Their very special guest (with the exception of DG Rose Puckett) was Sgt. Greg Pay- ment and K9 Officer, Loki, from the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Pay- ment explained how they got Loki and the training that took place. He then brought Loki around to meet the Lions in attendance.

Page 10 Our Deerwood Lakes Lions annual Mother’s Day tea held on Satur- day, May 11, 2019 was a Wonderful success! With over 130 in attendance, we had a full house at Cascade Meth- odist Church in Deerwood. There were 17 tables (long and round) decorated by Lion members. The food was delicious from scones to lemon curd, chicken salad, little sandwiches and a array of fancy des- serts. Of course we had wonderful entertainment! Piano, singing, a talk on gardening herbs, and a talk about reflections on Spring. Our Celebra- tion of Spring was perfect. Thanks everyone for making it a success.
