In total 60 species of Institute, Thoothukudi, finfishes and shellfishes belonging to 13 orders, 31 families 43 genera were recorded from the study area. Tamil Nadu, India Calculated values of biodiversity indices were: Shannon Wiener diversity index (H’) [3.72 (August 2015) to 3.86 (July 2015)], Margalef richness index (d) [9.24 (August 2015) to 10.82 (January 2016)], Pielou’s C Sudhan evenness index (J’) [0.9671 (October 2015) to 0.9739 (April 2016)] taxonomic diversity index (D) [65.42 Department of Fisherie Biology (June2015) to 70.6 (November 2015)]. Etroplus maculatus, E. suratensis, Amblypharyngodon melettinus and Resource Management, and Stolephorus indicus were found to be highly abundant species represented from 52 finfish and 8 Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, shellfish species. The results of the present study indicated that Kumarakom Region of Vembanad Lake Tamil Nadu, India is endowed rich edible fish fauna.

Mitochondrial DNA COI sequences (KT985460, KT985461, KT985462, KT985463, KT985464) with 663 base pair length were developed for N. insignis. GenBank BLAST analysis shows 89% similarity with Nassarius (Varicinassa) variciferus and 44% bootstrap value in the Maximum Likelihood tree analysis. The taxa that first appear in these works are listed, their type specimens noted when known, and the current status of the available taxa discussed. Of the 375 species-group names that first appear in these works, 367 are available, and 8 arenomina nuda. Of the 367 available species-group taxa, approximately 219 are now considered valid. Ap- proximately 60% of the available species are represented by type material, mainly in the Natural History Museum in London and in the Leeds City Museum in Leeds, U.K. Hanley also described several genus-group and family-group names, some of which are still considered valid.     Chapter 32 MOLLUSCA AMIT MUKHOPADHYAY*, BASUDEV TRIPATHY AND ABHIJNA GHOSH ABSTRACT Freshwater molluscs play a pivotal role in the freshwater ecosystem. Globally, there are estimated 5,000 species of fresh water molluscs, of which 217 have been reported from India. This paper gives an updated nomenclature with a checklist of 150 species of gastropods and 67 species of bivalves reported from freshwater environment of various ecosystems of India. In terms of biogeographical distributions of freshwater mollusc in India, 15 species of gastropods and 18 species of bivalves have discontinuous distribution. Western Ghats is considered to be a unique biodiversity hotspot for molluscs with a record of 77 species of freshwater molluscs alone in this area. This paper along with an updated nomenclature of freshwater molluscs of India also highlights their diversity, distribution and conservation in India. Key Words: Mollusca, Bivalves, Gastropods, Freshwater, India. INTRODUCTION In the freshwater environment, molluscs are an important group and their abundance plays pivotal role in freshwater ecosystem functioning (Vaughn et al., 2004). Fresh water molluscs are common in ponds, lakes, paddy fields, quiet water pools, and flowing waters like lower section of perennial rivers, irrigation canals etc. Freshwater gastropods are generally found attached to submerged vegetation, rocks, sticks, bricks etc, but bivalves live partly buried in the sand or mud. Similar to the gastropods the bivalves exhibit variations in shell features depending upon the ecology of the species and may produce eco-phenotypes (Subba Rao, 1989). Molluscs form an important component of biological monitoring in terms of rating the water quality and status of aquatic systems (Strong et al., 2008).

Jeena1*, P. K. Asokan2, R. Vidya2 & P. Vijayagopal1 The Indian black clam Villorita cyprinoides (Family: Cyrenidae), an extractive commercially exploited species with aquaculture importance contributing more than 70% of clam fshery in India, is endemic to the Indian peninsula. Currently, there is very sparse information, especially on the molecular data of Villorita. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive knowledge of mitogenome architecture and assess the phylogenetic status of Cyrenidae. This has resulted in reporting the frst complete mitogenome of V. cyprinoides using next-generation sequencing technology. The A+T circular mitogenome was 15,880 bp long, exhibiting 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs) including ATP8 (absent in several bivalves), 22 transfer RNA, and two ribosomal RNA genes residing in the heavy strand in a clockwise orientation and a gene order akin to Corbicula fuminea. The molecular phylogeny inferred from a concatenated multi-gene sequence [14 mitochondrial (12 PCGs, rrnS and rrnL) and two nuclear genes (Histone H3, 18S rRNA)] from 47 representative species of superorder Imparidentia, clustered V. cyprinoides and Cyrenid clams to a single clade supporting the monophyly of Cyrenidae. The subsequent mitochondrial gene order analysis substantiates the close relationship of V. cyprinoides and C. fuminea, analogous to phylogenetic output. The multilocus tree topology calibrated with verifed fossil data deciphered the origin and diversifcation of Cyrenid clams during late Triassic- early Jurassic. The data derived from this study shall contribute remarkably for further insights on cryptic species identifcation, molecular characterization of bivalve mitogenomes and mitochondrial evolutionary history of genus Villorita.
