Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Island Portugal Friday, April 28, 2017 The seas remained lumpy through the night prior to reaching he Azores. During that time, I did feel a “Heart Tug” as we passed about 300 miles north of Funchal, Madeira, the origin of my first pacemaker. Most of you know of that story with us being taken off the ship there for the necessary implantation of my first pace-a-maker. It was built by a French company, that was owned by an Italian company and installed by a Portuguese doctor within hours of our arrival in Funchal. The fact that it could only be read with a French computer led to some interesting sequences during subsequent doctor visits in the USA. Ponta Delgado is on Sao Miquel Island, the largest of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago. These islands have their own microcli- mate and because of its location in the mid Atlantic Ocean, the seawater temperature is very constant. These waters gets contributions from the cold north Atlantic and the Gulf Stream affected southern portions. Hence it is a real cafeteria for fish of all sorts and whaling was a big part of its economy until Portugal outlawed it in 1974. But fishing persists as does a whale watching tourism attraction as eve- ry type of whale migrates through these waters. The atmospheric temperature is also very mild. Homes do not have heating, maybe one fireplace at most. The islands are volcanic in origin and most of the islands have numerous lakes—really craters remaining after volcanic reactions. -

Faial, blue, cosmopolitan island ABOUT Photo: Publiçor Faial, blue, cosmopolitan island Faial is located in the central group of the Azores archipelago, and is part of the so called "triangle islands", together with São Jorge and the neighbouring Island of Pico, separated by the Faial Channel, a narrow sea inlet about 8 km wide. The Island covers an area of about 172km2, and is 21km long, with a maximum width of 14km. It was discovered in 1427 and colonised in 1432 by a number of Flemish settlers. It was given the name Faial because there are many beech trees here (faias), but no other island can boast such a huge mass of hydrangeas in different shades of blue, which frame the houses, separate the fields and border the roads, justifying the nickname Blue Island. Faial underwent considerable development from the 17th century on, making it an important trading post due to its geographical position as a safe haven between Europe and the Americas. More recently it was the communications hub between the continents and today is a mandatory point of reference for international yachting. The highest point is Cabeço Gordo, in the centre of the island, at 1,043m above sea level. It is a magnificent natural viewpoint which in fine weather enables you to see all the islands of the triangle and as far as Graciosa. Close by lies a huge crater called Caldeira, about 2km in diameter and 400m deep. It is surrounded by blue hydrangeas and lush vegetation, amongst which cedars, junipers, beeches, ferns and mosses stand out, and some of which are important examples of the original vegetation of the island. -

The aim of this paper was to investigate the arthropod colonisation of a recently erupted volcano in the framework of a general model of colonisation kinetics. 2. We analysed the diversity of arthropod communities at three locations on Faial Island (Azores) using a well-defined disturbance gradient: (i) a site that is new land added by the eruption of Capelinhos Volcano of 1957; (ii) a site moderately affected by this eruption; and (iii) a pristine site not affected. We calculated the recolonisation times at the disturbed sites using species richness at the undisturbed site as an equilib- rium value (last erupted 900–1000 years ago). 3. Species with different distributional ranges (endemic, native non-endemic and introduced) have different colonisation kinetics. Introduced exotic species were par- ticularly rapid in colonising the erupted volcano, reaching a number of species greater than that observed in the undisturbed area. By contrast, native non-endemic species had more difficulty in recolonising the erupted area, and no endemic has reached it. The volcano community is dominated by a few species with high abun- dance and shows low richness and strong dominance in comparison with the undis- turbed community. -

The station was built moderately SE Plate Plate from the central part of the Graciosa Island, in a heavily forested area that grows over recent basaltic lava flows. The array comprises eight data acquisition elements (H1 to H8) and one central recording facility (CRF) where the data are collected before transmitted to Vienna. The geometry of the array is arranged in two groups, namely, a pentagon outer sub-array and a inner triangular sub-array. -

High electrical conductivity values are typically associated with volcanic-hydrothermal systems and the magnetotelluric (MT) method has proven to be successful in mapping such conductivity contrasts and constraining volcanic processses. The Azores archipelago (Portugal) is formed by nine volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean where the American, Eurasian, and African plates meet at a triple junction. São Miguel Island is the largest of the archipelago and hosts three trachytic polygenetic volcanoes: Sete Cidades, Fogo (Água de Pau) and Furnas. Following our earlier MT studies at Furnas, 44 high- quality (to ~1000s) broadband MT sites were collected during 2018 across Fogo Volcano and the adjacent Congro region that is prone to seismic swarm activity. -

Nowadays the Azores’ main industries are tourism, raising cattle for milk and meat, and fishing. The Azores archipelago, with a peculiar geodynamic setting, presents a huge geodiversity and important geological heritage, being considered a natural laboratory of volcanic geodiversity. The recognition of the value of the Azorean geological heritage effectively occurs with its integration in the European and Global Geoparks Network, under the auspices of the UNESCO, in march 2013, being the first truly archipelagic geopark, with the motto “9 islands - 1 geopark” “ where people can enjoy eruptions of flavours, smells and experiences”.
