Nanda and Pati (1989) and Ram Krishan et.al (1988) on the basis of donminant lithological assemblages of Eastern ghat belt. Longitudinally divided into following four (4) zones. 1. Western – Charnockitic Zone 2 Western – Khondalite Zone 2. Central – Migmatite Zone 3. Eastern –Khondalite Zone Recent works by chelty et.al 2001, 2003 helped in identifying leptynites and shear zone in Eastern ghat belt and there by sub divide the EGB to several structural domains viz. A) Eastern Ghat Boundary Shear Zone B) Sileru Shear Zone C) Koraput – Sonpur Shear Zone D) Nagavalli – Vamshadhara Shear Zone The area lies between Sileru shear zone in the west and Nagavalli – Vamshadhar Shear zone is identified as Easternghat provides with specific lithology, structure and metamorphic grade. The area from Salur in the North-Rajahmundry in the south including Aruku – Paderu in the west and Visakhapatnam – Visakhapatnam comes in Eastern ghat provides area with principle litho unit like Khondalite, Charnockites, leptynite and calc granulite. 2.4.2 Local Geology The present area is occupied by metapelites like Khondalte and Leptynite but the latter is dominating the Khondalite. Leptynite is a Garnet bearing quartz – Felspathic Gniess, white in colour (Leucogranite) with typical partly “Granoblastic” texture. The model mineralogyof leptynite as given below reveals it is K-Feldspar rich with equivalent amount of quart with an subordinate amount of Plagioclose Feldspar and Garnet. Accessory minerals like biotite and opaque cannot be identified megascopically. 5 Global Enviro Labs, Hyderabad EMP Report For Colour Granite Mine of 2.0 Ha, located in V.J Puram Village, (Vooralava Hill), M/s. Galaxy Rockmin (P) Limited Madugula Mandal, Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh. A) Quartz 30% B) K – Feldspar 32% C) Plagioclase Feldspar 16% D) Garnet 12% E) Biotite 3% F) Opaque 2% Local Geology : Colour Granite in this quarry is marketed as “Yellow Granite” occurs as large enclaves in Porphyroblastic Charnockites. Garnet – Quartz – Feldspar Gneiss essentially consists of Milky White Quartz & Feldspars with accessory minerals like Pink-Brown Garnets and Black Biotite, which occur as stringers. These Garnet – Quartz – Feldspar Gneiss are very Fine Grained with Granoblastic in texture.

One who is poor has little or no access to income, employment, education, housing, health and other basic necessities of the life. In fact, it is poverty which forces one to suffer agonies and hardship including social discrimination. Slum areas have substandard houses, high density and congestion overcrowding, in sanitary conditions and absence of basic amenities like drinking water, electricity and fair price shops, etc., the slums environment is responsible for the mental outlook of the dwellers, especially its effects on growing children is most remarkable. Children daily witness scenes of violence, drunkenness and crime. The personal hygiene is poor and is reflected in their clothing and living condition. Due to unhealthy environmental conditions prevailing in the slums, diseases like TB, Cholera, Malaria and Jaundice are common Visakhapatnam slums. The present study collects primary data from the study area and tries to explore the Population characteristics, Housing, Health and Socio-economic characteristics. It was found that most of the facilities are below the average. People are living in a very pathetic situation. The basic needs of people are not fulfilled. Such as Water, Sanitation, Health etc. Keywords: Slum, Population Characteristics, Health, Education, Work, Disease, Drinking water, Sanitation 1.

  • The Law of the Land Contested: Bauxite Mining in Tribal, Central India in an Age of Economic Reform
The law of the land contested: Bauxite mining in tribal, central India in an age of economic reform Patrik Oskarsson A thesis submitted to the School of International Development, University of East Anglia, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2010 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. Abstract This thesis explores the contestation over a bauxite mining project in the State of Andhra Pradesh which includes a number of factors that may be seen as producing conflicts over both the physical environment and equitable, inclusive development for very vulnerable people. A key issue at stake is an alternative use of land in the constitutionally protected Scheduled Areas for mining rather than low intensity cultivation and extraction of forest products. The strategic policy choice is either to prioritize the protection of tribals from absolute poverty or to promote economic growth through mining, reflecting alternative visions of development and justice. In the background to the current conflict is the Supreme Court ‘Samatha Judgement’ of 1997, at the time hailed as re-affirming the right to land for Scheduled Tribes in central India. But this judgement has been restricted on appeal to only the State of Andhra Pradesh. And not only has its jurisdiction been limited, since 2005 new attempts are being made to open up this land for large scale mining in joint ventures between the State government and private investors in Andhra Pradesh itself.

  • Traditional Uses of Some Medicinal Plants by Tribals of Gangaraju Madugula Mandal of Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh
Ethnobotanical Leaflets 13: 388-98 , 2009. Traditional Uses of Some Medicinal Plants by tribals of Gangaraju Madugula Mandal of Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh J. Lenin Bapuji* and S. Venkat Ratnam Department of Botany, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India *Corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] Issued 01 March 2009 Abstract During the years 2007-2008 several field trips were conducted to document the ethnomedicinal remedies for 47 diseases with 90 plant species of Angiosperms from three major tribes viz: Bagatas, Konda Doras and Valmikis who have been residing in Gangaraju Madugula Mandal of Visakhapatnam district. The plants were deposited as herbarium specimens in Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India. Key words : Traditional uses, medicinal plants, Introduction Some tribes are adhering to traditional way of life, native culture and customs, the tribal have vast store of information and knowledge on potentially useful medicinal plants. The traditional knowledge system in India is fast eroding due to steady decline in human expertise capable of recognizing various medicinal plants. Much of this wealth of knowledge is totally becoming lost as traditional culture is gradually disappearing because it is mostly oral (Hamilton, 1995). Therefore, effort should be initiated for the documentation and computerization of useful medicinal plants and their traditional knowledge (Mehrotra & Mehrotra, 2005). The value of medicinal plants to the mankind is very well proven. It is estimated that 70 to 80% of the world population rely chiefly on traditional health care system and largely on herbal medicines (Shanley and Luz, 2003). Only 15% of pharmaceutical drugs are consumed in developing countries (Toledo, 1995). The affluent people have little alternative to herbal medicine, and they depend on traditional health care system (Marshall, 1998).
