Jennifer N. Strickland. The Portrayal of African Americans in Coretta Scott King and Michael L. Printz Award Books (2000-2009) A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S degree. November, 2009. 36 pages. Advisor: Sandra Hughes-Hassell. In 2008, African Americans made up 14 percent of the population, yet books that contained African American characters made up only .06 percent of books published. With so few books being published about African or African Americans, it is difficult for librarians and teachers to find books that feature characters to which African American youth can relate. One way to find such books is to look at book awards. The purpose of this study was to see what types of African American characters are portrayed in award winning books, and to determine if the portrayals are authentic. A sample of thirteen fictional Coretta Scott King and Michael L. Printz award or honor books between the years 2000-2009 that contained at least one African American character were chosen to be analyzed. Using content analysis, all thirteen books were analyzed in general and seven were chosen to be analyzed in depth. The results of the study found that between 2000 and 2009, there was no difference between the portrayal of African American characters in Coretta Scott King Award winning books and Michael L. Printz award and honor winning books. There was also no difference between the portrayal of African Americans by African American award winning authors and the portrayal by White award winning authors. This bill is in line with and expands the Groton Town Ordinance #293 – Single use Plastic and Polystyrene Regulations to include limiting schools’ use of polystyrene trays. The Town of Groton already has an ordinance limiting single-use plastic bags, single use containers in restaurants and plastic straws. This ordinance was supported by over 70% of the citizens of the Town (per Town survey). This has been successfully implemented in the town with no discernable issues. We also support the investigation into defining compostable single-use product bags. List of hairstyles This is a non-exhaustive list of hairstyles, excluding facial hairstyles. EARTH, WIND & FIRE - Bio During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African- American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. It certainly was successful, as EWF combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and '70s multicultural spiritualism. "I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before," Maurice explains. "Although we were basically jazz musicians, we played soul, funk, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and dance music...which somehow ended up becoming pop. We were coming out of a decade of experimentation, mind expansion and cosmic awareness. I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force- feeding listeners' spiritual content." Maurice was born December 19, 1941, in Memphis, TN. He was immersed in a rich musical culture that spanned the boundaries between jazz, gospel, R&B, blues and early rock. All of these styles played a role in the development of Maurice's musical identity. At age six, he began singing in his church's gospel choir but soon his interest turned to percussion. He began working gigs as a drummer while still in high school. His first professional performance was with Booker T. Jones, who eventually achieved stardom as Booker T and the MGs.
