It shows what the subject … invents to face the paradox of a condition on which we are dependent but which to a large, definitive extent we cannot control.”1 – Birgit Pelzer For many years, I have had a maxim on composition by Hanne Darboven pinned above my writing desk, a statement she repeated so often it became a kind of manifesto: “I do like to write and I don’t like to read / one plus one is one two.”2 When Darboven was alive, I repeated the adage because it was affirming and even encouraging to know that she was probably sitting at a desk in Harburg, near Hamburg laying words, numbers, and symbols down on the page, diligently completing sheaves of work. The idea that made her pick up a pen each day may opposite page have required research and been difficult to conceptualize, but writing it out, 15/2/74 - 4/3/74. NYC “TODAY”, 1974 giving it symbolic form, was just a matter of time. However, it was not just the Pen and marker on amount of writing Darboven seemed to so fluidly produce that made her inspi- a 32-page notebook 1 3 8 /4 x 5 /4 inches rational as a writer; it was her approach to the reader. -

WITHIN A REALM OF DISTANCE LAWRENCE WEINER AT BLENHEIM PALACE 10 OCTOBER – 21 DECEMBER 2015 Press Preview: 9 October 2015 Blenheim Art Foundation is delighted to announce a new exhibition by American artist and founding figure of Conceptual Art, Lawrence Weiner. Opening at Blenheim Palace on 10 October, the exhibition will showcase works conceived by the artist over the last several decades, in addition to significant, site-specific works, created especially for the Palace. Integrated throughout the ornately furnished Palace rooms, as well as the monumental exterior of the 18th century building, the exhibition is a continuation of the artist‟s practice, using language as a medium to create a multitude of sculptural forms for this UNESCO World Heritage site. Lawrence Weiner is regarded as one of the most influential artists working today with a career spanning over fifty years. Within a Realm of Distance, conceived by the artist in close collaboration with Blenheim Art Foundation and co-curator Christian Gether, Director, ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, will feature a new and ambitious body of work presented in a building that dates back to 1704 and which famously became the birth place of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill in 1874. Existing as an idea rather than a physical object, Weiner invites visitors to experience his work in tandem with the rich heritage of the Palace, using the building‟s historic collections as a support structure for his artistic vision. Within a Realm of Distance is the second exhibition by Blenheim Art Foundation, a programme of contemporary art, which sees exhibitions presented at the Palace by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, and follows the inaugural exhibition Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace (2014). -

MARIAN GOODMAN GALLERY Dan Graham: WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART By Hal Foster (October 2009) OF ACTIVE ARTISTS over the age of sixty in the United States, Dan Graham may be the most admired figure among younger practitioners. Though never as famous as his peers Robert Smithson, Richard Serra, and Bruce Nauman, Graham has now gained, as artist-critic John Miller puts it, a “retrospective public.” Why might this be so? “Dan Graham: Beyond,” the excellent survey curated by Bennett Simpson of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (the show’s inaugural venue), and Chrissie Iles of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, offers ample reasons. If Minimalism was a crux in postwar art, a final closing of the modernist paradigm of autonomous painting and a definitive opening of practices involving actual bodies in social spaces, its potential still had to be activated, and with his colleagues Graham did just that. (This moment is nicely narrated by Rhea Anastas in the catalogue for the show.) “All my work is a critique of Minimal art,” Graham states (in an intriguing interview with artist Rodney Graham also in the catalogue); “it begins with Minimal art, but it’s about spectators observing themselves as they’re observed by other people.” Hence many of the forms associated with his work: interactions between two performers; performances by the artist that directly engage audiences; films and videos reflexive about the space of their making; installations involving viewers in partitions, mirrors, and/or videos; architectural models; and pavilions of translucent and reflective glass. -

Most recently her paintings have incorporated photographic images from broadcast media which depict conflict, injustice, and social unrest. These graphic images act as intellectual and compositional points of departure; ultimately occluded on the canvas, they remain as a phantom presence in the highly abstracted gestural completed works. -
