Colors: Crimson (PMS 7427) and Black Bennett has had quite a successful first three years on the Ellensburg Nickname: Wildcats campus, winning 30 of his first 36 games (with five of the six losses by a Mascot: Wellington the Wildcat margin of seven points or fewer). He has led Central Washington to three National Affiliation: NCAA Division II (1999-) Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in as many seasons Conference: and two NCAA Division II playoff berths, helping the Wildcats win 21 of their first 22 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (2001-05, 2008-) conference games under Bennett’s guidance including the only 8-0 record in conference President: Dr. James L. Gaudino history in 2008. Central has also had a combined 29 first-team all-conference selections (Air Force, 1972) over three seasons, including 13 first-team picks in 2009 as the Wildcats ascended to the Director of Athletics: Jack Bishop number one ranking in NCAA Division II for the first time in the program’s history. Bennett, (Southern Utah, 1970) who was named GNAC Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009, also mentored quarterback Faculty Athletics Representative: Dr. Ethan A. Bergman Mike Reilly to a runner-up finish in the Harlon Hill Trophy balloting in 2008 as the top (Eastern Oregon, 1974) Assistant A.D. for Media Relations: Jonathan Gordon Division II football player in the country. He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1983, playing football for his father, Shorty Bennett, and then embarked on a college Head Coach/Off. A 1988 graduate Alma Mater: Whitworth, 1988 Record at CWU: 33-11 (.750), fourth year of Whitworth with a degree in secondary education and math, Bennett then spent two Overall Record: 60-43 (.583), 10th year years as a graduate assistant coach at Washington State University, adding a Master’s Ass’t. He spent six seasons as the head coach at Western Oregon University Grad. Assistant (Cornerbacks): Damaro Wheeler in Monmouth, Oregon, compiling a 27-32 record as the Wolves’ mentor from 1995-2000. Assistant (Safeties): Taylor Breitzman During that time, he helped guide the school through a transition from the NAIA to Tight Ends: Shorty Bennett NCAA Division II ranks, leading the Wolves to the NAIA playoffs and a Columbia Football Strength & Conditioning: Andy Roof Association championship in 1997. Head Athletic Trainer: Kari Gage, A.T.C. Following his coaching stint at WOU, which had also included three seasons as an assistant coach, Bennett spent six years at the NCAA Division I level as an assistant coach. He was the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator under Joe Tiller at Purdue TEAM INFORMATION University from 2001-05 before becoming the assistant head coach at Michigan State University under John L. Smith in 2006. While at Purdue, he coached current Denver First Year of Football: 1901 Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton. All-Time Record: 467-309-24 (.599) Bennett has been married to wife Melissa for 23 years.
