Gu Zongpei The understanding of Beijing Cultural Spaces 49th ISOCARP Congress 2013 The understanding of Beijing Cultural Spaces Zongpei GU, China academy of urban planning and design, China “The enduring competitive advantages in a global economy lie increasingly in local things.”1 With the progress of globalization, urban culture becomes increasingly important. Beijing has a long history and rich cultural resources. But the space vectors of her cultural resources are being invaded in the process of urban growth. In the end of 2011, the municipal government decided to ―turn Beijing into a city of prestigious cultural center of national demonstration and promotion and international significance.‖ 2 Building such a ―Culture-enriched Beijing‖ pose an urgent quest to reexamine and analyze the current status of the city’s urban cultural space against the background of the new era. 1. Identification of Beijing’s Current Urban Cultural Space “A nation’s cultural renaissance starts with a summary of its legacy.”3 Beijing’s long history and rich cultural resources laid a solid foundation for her cultural construction. An empirical study of the current status of her urban cultural space is the basis and prerequisite for further analysis. This article will discuss the current status of Beijing’s urban cultural space from her historical cultural space and contemporary-modern urban cultural space in a time sequence. 1.1 Historical Cultural Space Before the establishment of People’s Republic of China, Beijing’s historical cultural resources can be divided into ancient time (before the opium war in 1840) and modern time(1980 – 1949). 1.1.1 Ancient Time Beijing’s history as a city can be traced back to more than 3,000 years ago.

Portuguese Family Names GERALD M. MOSER 1 Point Cabrillo reflects the Spanish spelling of the nickname of J oao Rodrigues Oabrilho - "the I(id," perhaps a play on words, if the Viscount De Lagoa was correct in assuming that this Portuguese navigator was born in one of the many villages in Portugal called Oabril (Joao Rodrigues Oabrilho, A Biographical Sketch, Lisbon, Agencia Geral do mtramar, 1957, p. 19). 2 Oastroville, Texas, -- there is another town of the same name in California - was named after its founder, Henry Oastro, a Portuguese Jew from France, who came to Providence, R.I., in 1827. From there he went to Texas in 1842, launching a colonization scheme, mainly on land near San Antonio. I came upon the story in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, on the eve of reading to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese a paper on "Cultural Linguistics: The Case of the Portuguese Family Names" (December 28, 1957). The present article is an enlarged version of that paper. 30 38 Gerald M. It includes names due to religious devotion, similar to but. not identical with the cult of the saints which has furnished so many baptismal names. These peculiar devotional names are not used as first names in Portugal, although some of them are commonly used thus in Spain.

While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that die photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

FORO Anales de Historia del Arte ISSN: 0214-6452 https://dx.doi.org/10.5209/anha.72183 The Royal Journey of Succession to Portugal of King D. Filipe I of Portugal and the architectonic renovation of the palatine residences: the case of the Royal Palace of Lisbon (Paço da Ribeira)1 Milton Pedro Dias Pacheco2 Recibido: 1 de febrero de 2020 / Aceptado: 28 de marzo de 2020 Abstract. During the Royal Journey of Succession to Portugal, which started in Madrid in March 1580 and ended in Lisbon in February 1583, the Spanish King Felipe II became D. Filipe I of Portugal. But this political expedition, which resulted in the legitimation of the new king before the old kingdom, would have serious repercussions in the field of palatine architecture, with the renovation of an important set of royal palaces belonging to the Portuguese Crown, integrated since then in the Iberian Dual Monarchy. The detailed analysis of the coeval documentary sources, with an emphasis on the epistolary correspondence produced within the sphere of Prudent-King circle, directly or indirectly, permits to comprehend the initial procedures implemented in the architectural renovation and spatial expansion of the main Portuguese royal palace in Lisbon: the Paço da Ribeira. The political and symbolic dimensions given to the palace building, made in a power scale and strength image of the King himself, must be analysed in the context of the materialization of a ruler who would inevitably leave the kingdom but not its people. Keywords: Iberian Dual Monarchy; King D. Filipe I of Portugal – Felipe II of Spain; Sixteen-century palaces; Portuguese Royal Residences; Palatine architecture; Royal Palace of Lisbon.
