This requires both identifying the excitation resources, which result to undesired noise inside the vehicle, and studying human reaction t applied vibration. Driveline linear torsional vibration will be modelled by a 14-degress of freedom system while engine cylinder pressure torques are considered as an input force for the structure. The results show good agreement with the corresponding reference output responses which proves the accuracy of the numerical approach fourth order Runge-kutta. -

The Performance of Vehicle Suspensions Fitted With Controllable Dampers by Gregory R. Firth, B.Sc. Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Mechanical Engineering The University of Leeds June 1991 To Donna and Jet Abstract First, techniques for modelling the vehicle and road surface are discussed, and the standard linear and nonlinear analysis methods are reviewed. Then, using the quarter car model and a single idealised road surface, a brief analysis of the passive and active suspensions, including full and limited state feedback schemes, is presented. The performance in terms of ride comfort, road hold ing ability and suspension travel for both systems is established, providing a yardstick against which the controllable damper systems can be compared. Three suspensions fitted with controllable dampers are then analysed. In order of increasing complexity these are; a three-state adaptive system, a two-state switcliable system, and a continuously variable system. After a performance comparison of the ideal system, the practical limitations present in real hard ware are included in the damper model. Their effect on performance is quanti fied and realistic response targets are set. The model is then extended to a two dimensional “bicycle” model, which enables control laws to be generated which take into account the correlation between front and rear wheel inputs. Using these laws to drive the active and continu ously variable damper system, the advantages of a correlated law are identified. The accelerations and suspension displacements of a passively suspended pro duction vehicle are measured during actual runs over three roads of varying roughness. -

Active suspension 1 Active suspension The active suspension and adaptive suspension/semi-active suspension are types of automotive suspensions that controls the vertical movement of the wheels with an onboard system, rather than in passive suspensions where the movement is being determined entirely by the road surface. This technology allows car manufacturers to achieve a greater degree of ride quality and car handling by keeping the tires perpendicular to the road in corners, allowing better traction and control. An onboard computer detects body movement from sensors throughout the vehicle and, using data calculated by opportune control techniques, controls the action of the active and semi-active suspensions. The system virtually eliminates body roll and pitch variation in many driving situations including cornering, accelerating, and braking. Active suspensions can be generally divided into two main classes: pure active suspensions and adaptive/semi-active suspensions. While adaptive suspensions only vary shock absorber firmness to match changing road or dynamic conditions, active suspensions uses some type of actuator to literally raise and lower the chassis independently at each wheel. Manufacturer brand names for adaptive suspensions include Airmatic suspension (Mercedes-Benz), Adaptive Damping, and Road-Sensing Suspension. Active suspensions include Active Body Control (Mercedes-Benz) and Active Roll Stabilization (BMW).[1][2][3][4] For instance, in the 2005 model year, the Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG has the Active Body Control active suspension as standard equipment, while the Mercedes-Benz S430 comes with the Airmatic adaptive suspension and has Active Body Control as an option.[5] According to The Truth About Cars, Active Body Control (ABC) "senses body movement and strangles it at birth. -

By varying the spring stiffness and damping coefficient in the system, different characteristics can be achieved de- pending on driver preferability and road disturbances. The difference in damp- ing coefficient will however lead to a trade-off between comfort and road holding, which means that in order to improve one of the areas, performance in the other will need to be reduced. This trade-off will also be different depending on the underlying road disturbances. This thesis is conducted on behalf of Volvo Cars, who are looking for a strategy in order to analyze the trade-off for different ISO classified roads which has been done through a literature study, theoretical analysis and comparison of control methods for different roads. A skyhook based controller was built with added modifications in order to reduce the jerk in the vehicle. Tests with the controller were carried out on a quarter car model as well as a full car model in IPG Car- maker. -

Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engg.(India) ABSTRACT Active Body Control or ABC is employed to explain hydraulic absolutely active suspension that enables management of the vehicle body motions and thus just about eliminates body rolling in several driving things together with cornering, fast and braking.
