With my own earnings, I did undergraduate (B.A. Economics). Untouchability, atrocities, and harassment practiced to my own my family and other dalit family in my native area inspired me to involve in social work. I worked as village animator and community organizer in some NGOs of Madurai and Trichy districts. During 1994, I promoted SEEDS along with some likeminded friends and women. I have dedicated my life for empowerment of women, children, youth and disabled belonging to dalit, backward and most backward communities in rural, urban slum and tribal area of Namakkal, Madurai and Trichirappalli Districts. My ambition is to identify agricultural families and educate them on organic farming and good productivity of organic produce thereby enable them get livelihood and sustainable development. Among PP Mahendran thirteen blocks of Madurai district, pulses were grown predominantly in five blocks viz., Thirumangalam, Department of Crop Usilampatti, T. Kallupatti, Sedapatti and Kalligudi according to their area, production and productivity.     Delineation of soil available Sulphur status in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu – a GIS approach TH. SA. Raja Rajeshwaran Research Scholar, Agro Climate Research Centre, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India. [email protected] Abstract- The study was conducted in Madurai district with a view to assess the soil available sulphur status at block level. A total of 1724 geo referenced surface soil samples have been manually collected from 13 blocks. The soil samples were analyzed and it is observed that 95and 5 % of the samples of the study area are deficient and sufficient in available sulphur content. The overall results portray that: barring Kottampatti block, the remaining blocks are severely deficient in available sulphur irrespective of the type of cropping systems and hence an intelligent application of sulphur fertilizers and organic manures are right away recommended. Key words- Available sulphur, GIS, Soil physico-chemical properties, correlations. 1, INTRODUCTION Sulphur (S) is the fourth major nutrient for the crop plants after nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium to the crop plants. It is an essential constituent of S-containing amino acids, viz. cysteine, cystine and methionine. It is a constituent of ferrodoxin-containing nitrogenase which takes part in biological nitrogen fixation and other electron transfer reactions. Lack of knowledge and importance about sulphur, exhaustive and high yielding cultivars and neglected usage of farm yard manures seems to have terminated to a wide occurrence of sulphur deficiency. As intensive farming practices are followed and use of sulphur free phosphatic fertilizers and pesticides became popular (Navneet Pareek, 2007), the areas which are presumed to contain adequate amount of sulphur may also begin to show sulphur deficiency [2].

The present study was conducted to find the cropping Olericulture pattern and its determinants in the semi-arid zone of southern Tamilnadu Rainfed semi-arid zone (Thirumangalam block, Madurai district). The survey was carried out to know the existing agricultural practices and it was correlated with rainfall, temperature, irrigation facility, market prices and socio-economic conditions of the cultivators. The study revealed that sorghum was suitable crop for rainfed area and paddy was appropriate crop for irrigated area. The Olericulture (vegetable cultivation) had market support and provided promising economic profitability for the farmers of this area. However, the productivity of barnyard millet is very low, due to lack of high yielding varieties and non adoption of integrated crop management practices. To replace this inconsistency of practices, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Madurai has laid out ten Front Line Demonstrations in the farmer’s field at Thirumangalam, Usilampatti and Sedapatti blocks. Farmers were provided improved crop management practices which resulted in higher yield than that obtained through the farmers’ practices.
