HALDO Unit 16D, Airport Industrial Estate, Wick KW1 4QS Chairman’s Welcome The Northern Nashville Club was first started in the late 60’s. They attracted the biggest names in Country Music, even back then - Hank Locklin to name but one, and down through the years many more followed. So it was inevitable that a festival should come next. This dream had been burning inside me for a long time, fed by music guru’s like George Bruce, David Oag, Kenny MacLean - my mentors. Putting a festival together required expertise in many areas - definitely not for one man and his Northern Nashville Committee, therefore I began my selection of the festival committee. To my delight I got the cream, the very best. It’s been a long struggle and despite my health failing at the last hurdle, we have achieved our ultimate goal. Thank You,one and all, for hanging in there. As it is a Caithness Music Festival it was necessary to have the unqualified support of our Country Cousins from the “Triple C”, and also the many other people who made the dream become a reality. To the sponsors, a special breed of people who not only contributed financially but offered practical help and support from day one, we can but Thank You. Finally a word of welcome to everyone, especially those that have travelled to attend our first festival. We hope you all enjoy the very best of Country Music. Year on year we will hopefully improve from listening to your views and opinions. The show itself will be presented by a guy better known for his than his compering. But, ladies & gentlemen, George Malcolm was trained by me so when he makes a mistake it’s only natural! George’s association with N. N. C. M. C. is such that he was our first ever Club compere and our very first honorary member, therefore he will, I’m sure, present the shows to you most professionally. Born 7 October 1962 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. An old-fashioned honky tonk performer of the traditional variety, Dale Watson made a major impact in 1995 with the release of his Cheatin' Heart Attack debut set for HighTone Growing up in Alabama, he had been introduced to country music by his marine father who ran a small band. His father even released a single, "Poor Baby', in the late 60s for Chaparral Records. When the family relocated to Pasadena, Texas, Watson began to learn ukulele, then guitar. Together with brothers Jim, who taught him the guitar, and Donny, he formed the Classic Country Band. They worked together for a year before Dale elected to set out on his own. However, he soon tired of playing other artists’ material and moved once again to Los Angeles in 1988. There he met John Jorgenson of the Desert Rose Band, who helped to secure Watson a record contract with Curb He released "You Pour It On And I Pour It Down", before the contract collapsed. Watson's problems were then exacerbated by his involvement in a serious car crash. However, after leaving Curb he was offered a publishing agreement with Gary Morris in Nashville. When that too proved an abortive venture, he returned to Los Angeles and appeared alongside River Phoenix in the movie The Thing Called Love. A promising acting career was foiled by Phoenix's subsequent death, and the itinerant Watson moved to Austin. There, he finally managed to secure a contract with Hightone, who released his debut album. Watson's subsequent releases on HighTone and the Continental Song City labels have shown him to be a reliable performer of high quality honky tonk. Every Song I Write Is For You is dedicated to his partner who was tragically killed in a car crash.

Davies' father was a country musician who, among other things, worked on Louisiana Hayride and Davies was fascinated by his jukebox filled with country music. As a performer, she went on the road with her brother Ron, whose songs have since been recorded by ("Long Hard Climb") and Three Dog Night ("It Ain't Easy"). An album that they made for A&M Records was never released. Davies married a jazz musician and, for a while, tried to be a jazz singer. When they separated, she moved to the west coast where she worked as a session singer. As a writer, she wrote "Bucket To The South", a US country hit for Ava Barber in 1978. Her first album, Gail Davies, for the Lifesong label in 1978 included her first US country hit, "No Love Have I", alongside further successes, "Poison Love" and "Someone Is Looking For Someone Like You". She moved to Warner Brothers Records and became a rarity - a female country performer producing her own records. She had US country hits with "", "I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)" and "". At RCA Records in 1984 she had further success with "Jagged Edge Of A Broken Heart" and "Trouble With Love". She formed Wild Choir in 1986, releasing a self-titled album for RCA. In the late 80s she moved to Liberty Records to become country music's first female staff producer. Davies has had many run-ins with the mostly male musical establishment in Nashville, and in 1995 she promoted and released her own album Eclectic. The tracks were as good as her previous hit records, but she has been denied radio-play by many US stations. She will continue her one-woman crusade, no doubt, supported by her British husband Rob Price, the bass player with the Stu Page Band. Her son is musician .

The Northern Nashville Country Music Club was formed in 1987 to promote country music in Caithness. One of the original founder members is still serving on the committee - our Chairman, Davy Shearer.

The club usually meets on the last Friday of the month in The Royal British Legion Clubrooms, Riverside Road, Thurso but occasionally the show date is changed to accommodate an artist.

Club membership stands at approximately 150 at present but non-members and guests are equally welcome to attend any of the shows. The shows normally start at 8.00pm with the support artist followed by the main artist, each performing a cabaret spot. Each band will then do a further two dance spots.

A number of International artists have appeared in the club including, from the USA, 'Country Legend' and star of the '' - Jean Sheppard. Also Pinto Bennet and his Motel Cowboys, John Permenter, Terry Sumsion and Geordie West from Canada. Many of Britain and Ireland's top entertainers have appeared in the N.N.C.M.C.

In the N.N.C.M.C. people come first. The committee and members will go to any length to make guests, visitors and artists feel they are among friends. Visitors from Australia, America, Holland, Ireland, England,Wales and all areas of Scotland have enjoyed time spent in the N.N.C.M.C.

Any locals who find themselves at the Festival and enjoy what they hear are most welcome to come along to our regular meetings - visit our website at www.nncmc.ukf.net or keep an eye on local press and advertising for forthcoming dates and acts. Born Rebecca A. Hobbs, 24 January 1950 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, USA. Hobbs' father loved big band music and her mother country, two strong influences on her later work. She was given a piano when she was nine years old, and began playing the piano parts on rock 'n' B H roll records, notably those of Jerry Lee Lewis. At the age of 15, she ECKY OBBS formed an all-girl group, the Four Faces Of Eve, and from 1971, she worked with a bar band, Swamp Fox, in Baton Rouge. The band went to Los Angeles in 1973, but they soon broke up.

Hobbs recorded what is now a highly obscure album for MCA Records (Helen Reddy recorded one of the songs, "I'll Be Your Audience"), and then recorded for Tattoo, finally achieving some entries on the US country charts with "Honky Tonk Saturday Night" and "I Can't Say Goodbye To You". Her duet with , "Let's Get Over Them Together", was a US country hit and then came a top- selling single, "Hottest Ex In Texas". Her compositions include "I Want To Know Who You Are Before We Make Love" (Alabama, ), "Still On A Roll" (Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley, Kelvin Henderson), "I'll Dance A Two Step" (Shelley West) and "Feedin' The Fire" (Zella Lehr).

Her effervescent style was well to the fore on her honky tonk album All Keyed Up, which was co-produced by Richard Bennett, Steve Earle's guitarist. She also recorded what is arguably the best tribute to , "Jones On The Jukebox". There was a six-year gap between All Keyed Up and The Boots I Came To Town With, during which the impetus had left her career. The latter album, still a good one, included her version of "Angels Among Us", an original song that Alabama had first recorded. During a hiatus between albums, she recorded briefly with Curb Records, including an interesting version of the 1963 Ernest Ashworth hit, "TalkBack Trembling Lips", which was also a hit for Johnny Tillotson later in the year.

Taking part in the Festival are bands from Caithness’ two High School’s.

The Thurso High School Band for this event is called The Joseph A. Broady Appreciation Society. The group has been formed by music pupils sitting their Higher exams this year. They are: Andy Macleod - Guitar, Colin Morrison - Guitar, Ben Anthoney - Drums, Hamish McNeill - Mandolin & Bass, and Andrew Fraser - Bass.

They are joined by Vicky McLeod who plays fiddle on a number of tunes. Although the group have performed before many times on stage, they were delighted to be able to participate in a concert with such famous names from the Country music scene.

They will be performing cover versions of The Wreck of the Old '97, The Wild Mountain Rose and a couple of songs by Woodie Guthrie. They have been rehearsed for the day by the Thurso High School guitar instructor and local musician, John Newton.

Wick High Country and Western Band started up through a common interest kids had in country and western music.

The kids all chose the songs and decided they wanted to learn and play songs by the "classic" country artists such as Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Hank Williams (Yes! It's true!)

There are currently 2 bands; one junior and one senior, both crammed full of talent with voices and stars for the future. The main aim at the Country Club in school is to encourage kids to listen and experiment with country music and hopefully build some bridges for the future. Born in Steenbergen Holland in 1964. Country Music has always been Frank’s great passion for he grew up with Country Music. His parents were huge fans of Johnny Cash, while Frank's favourite artists include Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and Dwight Yaokam. From the age of 13 years to 15 year he lived with its family in Tanzania, there he learned guitar and the English language. Up to 1994 music was a hobby for Frank , then he took guitar lessons and was determined to make his success as a country music singer/. In 1994 Frank made a tape with a number of cover songs plus one of his own songs. This tape reached Bob Grady Records in Calhoun (Georgia). The first 2 singles were released and both stayed at the #1 position for three months in the European Top 100 Indie Charts. This success took Frank to the U.S. to record his first album " You're A Phonecall I Need To Make" with top studio musicians like John Hughey (Steel player with Vince Gill). This album was very successful and was chosen for album of the year in his native Holland (Gram Award) in 1998 and resulted in 4 nominees by the European C.M.A. In 1999 his second album "My Way Or The Highway"was released again on Bob Grady records and follows the style of the first album with 5 of Frank's own songs. In July 2000 the album "My Way Or The Highway"was chosen for album of the year by the European C.M.A. Frank has toured in England 5 years in a row now and played at festivals in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France. Other Acts appearing at the Festival include:- George Malcolm George has been involved in and around the Country music scene for many years, having played solo and in bands. He is probably best known for fronting the Duke Boys and still has a loyal following of fans locally. Having a tremendous voice himself he has made several Country Albums and CD’s. George was resident in Thurso when N.N.C.M.C. was formed and compered their first show in 1987. He has played at many Country festivals here and abroad so it is therefore even more appropriate that he has been invited to compere this, the first N.N.C.C.M. Festival. Paul Donnelly Paul has come to the attention of Irish Country fans in Ireland, Scotland and England over the past couple of years. he served his apprenticeship in the music industry entertaining on cruise ships and luxury liners. This experience has groomed him well and is evident in his lively and polished stage performances. Manson Grant and the Dynamos with Daniel McPhee Almost 40 years ago Robert Cameron got together with a group of guys to form the Dynamos Dance Band. A few years later Manson Grant joined the band and they gave up their 9 to 5 jobs to make a living out of music. The band, now a 6 piece called The Dynamos Showband recorded their first album, and spent the next 7 years touring the UK. The band whittled down to a 3 piece under the name Manson Grant and the Dynamos, with Manson Grant on lead vocals. A song 'The Keys In The Mailbox' was played by Noel Cannon of 'Cannon's Country’ a BBC Radio Scotland show - and the group were given the most requested artiste for the year award by the BBC. This was repeated the following year. By now Manson Grant and the Dynamos were touring all over the UK and Ireland, and supporting top country acts such as Hank Locklin, Porter Wagoner, etc. They played to over 70,000 people at London's Irish Festival, and 21,000 in Nashville, Tennessee where they represented Scotland at the prestigious American Country Music Associations Fanfare celebrations. Today, after 16 albums and over 100 awards to their credit the band are still very much to the fore. Daniel McPhee, well known as one of Scotland’s top accordionists, joined over a year ago. Dez Walters Dez began his musical career very early and by the time he was 11 had recorded his first single. During his teenage years he became the lead singer in rock bands teaching himself to play the guitar. After learning the banjo, his love of bluegrass music led him to play in bluegrass bands, until he discovered an interest in Country Music. He went on to play with many big country stars in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and America. In 1992 he started his own band because he wanted to offer the public something different by performing his own material and choice of songs. In 1996 he won a prestigious award for best song and songwriter. He continues to write and perform his own songs and, since starting his own group, has won numerous awards nationwide including the title of Scotland’s most Popular Country Music band for two consecutive years. Continued over Shogun Often described as Orkney’s busiest band, Shogun’s unique strength lies in their tremendous diversity of material, which has developed through years of playing to audiences of mixed ages and cultures. Early excursions included weekend breaks organised by Manson Grant and the Dynamos. Shogun played an increased proportion of Country music at such events and, as a result, have since been asked to appear at several Country clubs across the UK and are about to make their third trip to Spain, again thanks to Manson and the boys. Winning the Northern Nashville Club’s “Best Scottish Band” award was a delightful surprise and offered a great deal of encouragement to the band. All members have a wealth of professional experience under their belts which can only streamline any performance and it looks as though they will be travelling more in the future as bookings continue to pour in from far and wide. Caledonia From Golspie, Caledonia have regularly taken Country music to audiences in Europe and Australia as well as the UK over the past few years. The band are well known throughout the Highlands, as each member of the line-up has a long pedigree in the world of Country music. Sometimes better known as the “Jacks” in Caithness, they are delighted to be part of this, the first Northern Nashville Country Festival. Geordie Jack, Dado Duncan and Alan Thompson backed up Becky Hobbs in Holland, in the days when they were known as Colorado. Now, joined by Geordie’s two talented sons, Kevin and Trevor, they are looking forward to working with Becky again, and enjoying all the other grand artistes on the programme. Their appearance at the Festival is likely to be one of the rare chances you will get to see and hear them ‘live’, as they are now only making very selected performances. Indeed, fans from as far away as Switzerland are making a special trip to Thurso just to hear the boys play and sing their favourite songs. Brendan Quinn Recognised as one of the top country vocalists in Ireland, Brendan has enjoyed a long career in the music business in his native Ireland, the UK and Canada. Over the past few months he has been bringing his talented younger son to the attention of the public and it looks as if he is destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. The Kate Bain Band This three-piece band are based in Caithness with a line-up of Kate Bain on keyboards and lead vocals, her husband Richard on drums, and David Shearer on lead guitar, fiddle, mandolin and vocals. Their music is mainly based on Modern Country, Cajun and some Traditional, and other styles can catered for when required. By varying their music they aim to please most audiences. Kate and the boys also help support local charities and fund-raising events by giving up their time to provide music. We feel privileged to have a local band of their calibre supporting our Festival. The Dusty Boots Line Dancers Dusty Boots, alongside Halkirk Hillbillies, are two fairly long established local line dance groups who meet once weekly purely for fun and exercise. The girls have invited everyone along on Sunday morning at 12.00 to join them for a workshop. This will allow beginners, intermediates and even non-starters the chance to strut their stuff and have a go, or just go along and watch and listen to the music. OPEN MONDAY TO SATURDAY 9AM to 5.30PM.
