Increased or decreased F/B ratio is regarded as dysbiosis, whereby the former is usually observed with obesity, and the latter with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Probiotics as live microorganisms can confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts. There is considerable evidence of their nutritional and immunosuppressive properties including reports that elucidate the association of probiotics with the F/B ratio, obesity, and IBD. Orally administered probiotics can contribute to the restoration of dysbiotic microbiota and to the prevention of obesity or IBD. However, as the effects of different probiotics on the F/B ratio differ, selecting the appropriate species or mixture is crucial. The most commonly tested probiotics for modifying the F/B ratio and treating obesity and IBD are from the genus Lactobacillus. In this paper, we review the effects of probiotics on the F/B ratio that lead to weight loss or immunosuppression.

Pal’chevskogo, 17, Vladivostok 690041, Russia Received May 28, 2007 Abstract—Bacilli of the species Bacillus subtilis, B. pumilus, B. mycoides, B. marinus and B. licheniformis (a total of 53 strains) were isolated from 15 invertebrate species and the water of the Vostok Bay, Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan. Bacilli were most often isolated from bivalves (22.7%) and sea cucumbers (18.9%); they occurred less frequently in sea urchins and starfish (13.2 and 7.5%, respectively). Most of bacilli strains were isolated from invertebrates inhabiting silted sediments. No Bacillus spp. strains were isolated from invertebrates inhabiting stony and sandy environments. The species diversity of bacilli isolated from marine objects under study was low. Almost all bacterial isolates were resistant to lincomycin. Unlike B. pumilus, B. subtilis isolates were mostly resistant to benzylpenicillin and ampicillin. Antibiotic sensitivity of B. licheniformis strains was variable (two strains were resistant to benzylpenicillin and oxacillin, while one was sensitive). A significant fraction of isolated bacilli contained pigments. Pigmented strains were more often isolated from seawater sam- ples, while colorless ones predominated within hydrobionts. DNA and life cycle: the laboratory strain of B. subtilis is naturally transformable and, in the typical example illustrated, a foreign DNA segment ‘insert’ is integrated into the amyE genetic locus by double crossover homologus recombination. A crucial facet of the life cycle of most B. subtilis and most Firmicutes is their ability to switch from a classical binary fission, with equal segregation of sister chromosomes,to endospore formation. The resultant asymmetrical division generates small prespore (red) and larger mother- cell (green) compartments with different patterns of transcription. The tough endospore that results can remain dormant for a long period of time before germinating to resume vegetative growth. Environmental interactions: B. subtilis is typically found in association with plants as both an epiphyte and also within the rhizosphere. In some parts of the world batches of spores are used extensively for plant protection in the form of a seed dressing. B. subtilis has also been studied extensively as a model system for biofilm formation, switching classically between planktonic and sessile states. Industrial applications: B. subtilis and closely related organisms are responsible for huge levels of production of hydrolytic commodity enzymes, particularly proteases and amylases. They are also popular in probiotic formulations and can be engineered for production of fine chemicals, such as the vitamin, riboflavin.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Pan‑genome analysis and ancestral state reconstruction of class halobacteria: probability of a new super‑order Sonam Gaba1,2, Abha Kumari2, Marnix Medema 3 & Rajeev Kaushik1* Halobacteria, a class of Euryarchaeota are extremely halophilic archaea that can adapt to a wide range of salt concentration generally from 10% NaCl to saturated salt concentration of 32% NaCl. It consists of the orders: Halobacteriales, Haloferaciales and Natriabales. Pan‑genome analysis of class Halobacteria was done to explore the core (300) and variable components (Softcore: 998, Cloud:36531, Shell:11784). The core component revealed genes of replication, transcription, translation and repair, whereas the variable component had a major portion of environmental information processing. The pan‑gene matrix was mapped onto the core‑gene tree to fnd the ancestral (44.8%) and derived genes (55.1%) of the Last Common Ancestor of Halobacteria. A High percentage of derived genes along with presence of transformation and conjugation genes indicate the occurrence of horizontal gene transfer during the evolution of Halobacteria. A Core and pan‑gene tree were also constructed to infer a phylogeny which implicated on the new super‑order comprising of Natrialbales and Halobacteriales. Halobacteria1,2 is a class of phylum Euryarchaeota3 consisting of extremely halophilic archaea found till date and contains three orders namely Halobacteriales4,5 Haloferacales5 and Natrialbales5. Tese microorganisms are able to dwell at wide range of salt concentration generally from 10% NaCl to saturated salt concentration of 32% NaCl6. Halobacteria, as the name suggests were once considered a part of a domain "Bacteria" but with the discovery of the third domain "Archaea" by Carl Woese et al.7, it became part of Archaea.

Genetically 1234567890():,; distinct B. subtilis swarms form a boundary upon encounter, resulting in killing of one of the strains. This process is mediated by a fast-evolving kin discrimination (KD) system consisting of cellular attack and defence mechanisms. Here, we show that these swarm antagonisms promote transformation-mediated horizontal gene transfer between strains of low related- ness. Gene transfer between interacting non-kin strains is largely unidirectional, from killed cells of the donor strain to surviving cells of the recipient strain. It is associated with acti- vation of a stress response mediated by sigma factor SigW in the donor cells, and induction of competence in the recipient strain. More closely related strains, which in theory would experience more efficient recombination due to increased sequence homology, do not upregulate transformation upon encounter. This result indicates that social interactions can override mechanistic barriers to horizontal gene transfer.
